The PF carnival makes a stop there this week, to understand the goal of the project’s planners, and to see how the work is progressing.

The new self-sustainable city, named Masdar, is being built from the ground up for an estimated cost of $22 billion dollars. Funding comes from the government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), who will employ the most innovative architects, engineers, and scientists from around the world to accomplish the project. The UAE’s long term goal is to be less dependent on oil, and to become the World Research Center for Renewable Energy.

There is a definite advantage to building the city from the ground up. All buildings will have energy efficient designs from the very beginning. This will save on cost, and make an all around better building. However, they are hoping that this first experiment in sustainability will provide much needed information on improving the pollution situation in current cities such as Los Angeles and London.

  6. What an amazing city! I imagine the tourism trade will be fairly good in the city when it is built. Green energy intrigues me and I wish more places in the US would start utilizing it. But until people in the US have more of an immediate incentive to use green energy, it probably won’t grow like it should.

  24. It’s “United Arab Emirates” not “Emeritus”. The UAE is a confederation run by a group of very rich people. They have enough money to indulge in any pastime they wish. In this case Masdar is just another pursuit into whatever and directed to the extremely well-heeled of Europe and the U.S. Desalinated ocean water will only go so far in one of the the most fresh water-starved places on earth. If WE want to be “green”, we’re going to have to change the way we live. Masdar is a curiosity only.
