Licensing MySQL and InnoDB

Innobase Oy is an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) for MySQL AB. MySQL distributes and supports InnoDB within some of its product offerings.

InnoDB is included in the MySQL Enterprise Server and is suitable for a broad range of users. If you want to use MySQL and InnoDB under a commercial license, you can purchase a license from MySQL AB. Substantial discounts are available for volume orders.

The MySQL Community Edition, which is available in open source form under the terms of the GPLv2 also includes InnoDB.

For OEMs and ISVs, MySQL AB offers embeddable versions of the MySQL Enterprise Server. If you are an OEM or ISV and you want to bundle InnoDB Hot Backup with your MySQL application, please contact innodb_sales_ww at oracle.com or use our contact form to request a price quote for embedded use.

The GPLv2 License

The GNU General Public License version 2, under which both MySQL and InnoDB are published, does not allow, without permission from MySQL AB and Innobase Oy, linking of InnoDB and MySQL, or the client libraries of MySQL, to a product which you distribute but which does not itself satisfy the GNU GPLv2 license.

If you want to combine MySQL and InnoDB to a product which you distribute, and which is not open source, or for which the user has to pay a fee to you, you have to purchase a commercial license from MySQL AB.

A commercial MySQL+InnoDB license is an ordinary software license: it does not bind the buyer to the restrictions of the GPL license. For example, the buyer of a commercial license is not required to publish the source code of his application.
