Specialised Facilities

The BAE Systems Marine Ltd shipyard is located within the port. It has a long tradition of submarine and surface shipbuilding for navies around the world. This tradition has equipped Barrow with a workforce highly skilled in vessel design, build and commissioning.

The head office of James Fisher & Sons Shipping is also located at Barrow, and BNG operates a fleet of nuclear fuel-carrying vessels from a dedicated terminal within the docks.

ABP�s Multi-Purpose Vessel

ABP�s multi-purpose vessel Furness Abbey is based at Barrow, and has also undertaken work at a number of North-West and Irish ports. The vessel is available for hire and is suitable for a range of tasks, including hydrographic surveying (SeaBat multi-beam echosounder), buoy handling, bed levelling, towage and marine-environmental work.

Storage

Up to 20 ha of secure open storage is available. Several long-term lay-up berths are also available.

Cranage & Mechanical Handling Equipment

Mobile cranes, a 120-tonne quayside crane and other plant are available, by arrangement.
