National recovery plan for the Black-throated finch southern subspecies (Poephila cincta cincta)

Black-throated Finch Recovery Team
Department of Environment and Conservation (NSW) and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, 2004

About the plan

The southern subspecies of black-throated finch Poephila cincta cincta Gould 1837 occurs in New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland. There have been only five records of the blackthroated finch in NSW since the early 1970s, and it was not located during a search conducted by Birds Australia in 2000 in the Inverell district in NSW where there had been regular sightings until a severe drought in 1967 (Ley and Cook 2001a,b). There have been very few records in Queensland south of Clermont since the late 1970s and the range of the subspecies between the Desert Uplands and the Atherton Tablelands has contracted substantially over the last 20 years.

This document constitutes the formal Recovery Plan (at a national level and state level) for the southern subspecies of black-throated finch and, as such, considers the requirements of the subspecies across its known range. It identifies the actions to be taken to ensure the long-term viability of the subspecies in nature and the parties who will undertake these actions. Attaining the objectives of this Recovery Plan are subject to budgetary and other constraints affecting the parties involved. The information in this Recovery Plan is accurate to August 2004. Throughout this document, any further reference to the black-throated finch will mean the southern subspecies unless stated otherwise.
