General Search Tips
The Advanced search page lets you limit your search more accurately than the simple search box which is available at the top right of every page on this website.
You must put in your search term in the text box before clicking on the 'Search' button. You can also use any other selector to define your search more closely.
If you want to start your search again, click the 'Reset' button and all the fields will be cleared.
Include similarly spelled words…
If you are unsure of how to spell your search term, select this check box.
Results must contain…
Use these options to choose how your search results will match your search term
Publication date…
If you know roughly when the document you are looking for was published, use the 'From date' and 'To date' boxes to specify a date range. You can specify these dates from the calendar, or enter dates in the box in a DD/MM/YYYY format.
Other criteria
The rest of the page is made up of other criteria you can select in order to futher limit your search. To vew the options, click on [ Show options ] next to the section name. To hide these options, click on [ Hide options ] .
The more of these sections you select from, the smaller the number of search results that will be returned. If you select a 'Air' from 'Mode of transport' and 'East of England' from 'Region' the search will only return results both to do with air travel and which are particularly to do with the east of England.
Selecting more than one option in a section will increase the number of search results, by including results which match every option you select. Selecting both 'Air' and Roads' from 'Mode of transport' will return results which are to do with air travel, road transport or both.
Results not what you were looking for?
After you have clicked on 'Search' you may find that the search results do not include what you were looking for, or your search may have returned no results.
In either case, select the 'Refine results' or 'Go back'.
