Grow your own trumpet

AMARYLLIS are perfect for a stunning indoor display.

They have large trumpet shaped flowers held on sturdy, green stems and are easy to grow in a free-draining compost or in a glass vase filled with water.

Place the bulbs in a cool place with a temperature of about 15c with plenty of light.

Keep the bulbs lightly watered if they're growing in compost (in a vase keep the water level topped up), especially when the flower spike starts to emerge.

When the flower opens feed the plant once a week with a weak solution of tomato feed and carry on feeding until the leaves turn yellow.

For plants growing in water they can be potted into a pot of compost after flowering, but be careful as the roots are very brittle.
