David Gregory the Buzz at Business EmmysThe event may have been to honor the best in business reporting, but the buzz at the top of the Rock this afternoon was who would be taking over the nation's #1 public affairs show — David Gregory's soon-to-be announced gig as moderator of Meet the Press. Insiders tell TVNewser Richard Leibner, who was at the event, was telling people he is "David Gregory's agent of record" but that he was not involved in the negotiations. Which means Gregory most likely worked with an attorney to negotiate the deal. TVNewser has learned Tom Brokaw will make the announcement this Sunday after his interview with Pres.-elect Barack Obama. On hand at today's luncheon: Morley Safer, Dan Rather, Christiane Amanpour, Mike Schneider and Anthony Mason. As for the Emmys, held at the Rainbow Room at 30 Rock, ABC, CBS, Bloomberg and PBS all took home two awards each. CNBC and Minyanville.com took home one each. The press release is after the jump... Charlie Gibson Named National Press Foundation Award WinnerABC's Charlie Gibson will be the recipient of the 2008 Sol Taishoff Award for Distinguished Contributions to Broadcast Journalism. "The judges cited [Gibson's] professionalism and judgment in dealing with breaking news stories like the shootings at Virginia Tech and analytical stories involving the U.S. economy," according to a Foundation press release. Past recipients include Bob Schieffer, Gwen Ifill, Dan Rather, and the late Tim Russert. Monday Nov 03, 2008

Ailes, Lauer, 60 Minutes Set For Hall of Fame10 new members to the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame will be inducted tomorrow night, spanning the tube from Showtime to ESPN. A few will be from the TV news world as well, and each of the inductees are profiled on the B&C; site: • Marisa Guthrie describes FNC CEO Roger Ailes as having "the populist gumption and nose-to-the-grindstone work ethic of his Rust Belt roots." Ailes talks about the bias he sees in the media. "Everybody knew [Tim] Russert was a liberal Democrat," he says. "And everybody knows [Tom] Brokaw is a liberal Democrat. But they didn't let that get in the way of their questions, their reporting. They didn't get their ego out in front of the story. I have enormous respect for people who do that." He also gives an indication to his role in the mainstream media as a whole. "The day we all start doing the same thing and running over the same cliff like all those cows in a Roy Rogers movie, it's over," he says. "So as long as the cows are heading in one direction, you'll see me standing in the doorway saying, 'Hey, wait a minute, over here.'" Click continued for highlights from the profiles of NBC's Matt Lauer and CBS' 60 Minutes, also inductees tomorrow night... Wednesday Oct 15, 2008
David Westin: "Doing Great Journalism is Not the Same as Entering a Popularity Contest"TVNewser has obtained the remarks ABC News president David Westin made the other night as he accepted the Murrow award for best overall News Division. It's an interesting read in which Westin acknowledges the seemingly endless criticism that is heaped on the news media, and where that criticism often comes from: Hardly a day goes by that we don't read or hear someone taking us to task for not covering a story or for covering it too much or for the way that we cover it. And, let's be honest, sometimes the critics are right. None of us is perfect, and we as journalists must always use valuable criticism as a tool to help us do better. Westin also talked about "the greatest reward" a journalist can receive...it's after the jump. Tuesday Sep 23, 2008
60 Minutes Wins Three Emmys, PBS Wins 10CBS' 60 Minutes won more awards than any other program last night at the 29th annual News and Documentary Emmys ceremony. The network with the most awards was PBS, which won 10. CBS won five total awards — CBS Sunday Morning won the other two. ABC won four awards, with two going to World News with Charles Gibson and two going to 20/20. NBC took home two awards for segments on the Nightly News with Brian Williams. HDNet also won an Emmy. Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to Ken Burns, Bob Schieffer and Tim Russert. Also honored with tributes — Jim McKay, William F. Buckley and Tony Snow. • Related: The Los Angeles Times' Matea Gold writes about the ceremony, and quotes Williams about Russert. "Try getting through an election season without Tim," he said last night. "He is what's missing from our current campaign debate, our current national conversation." Saturday Aug 23, 2008
Pioneer Shister Inducted Into LGBT Journalists Hall of FameProving true one of her slogans: "Shisterhood is Powerful." TVNewser's Gail Shister will be inducted into the LGBT Journalists Hall of Fame this afternoon at the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association (NLGJA) Convention in Washington, D.C. She'll be just the ninth inductee into the Hall of Fame. "It means an enormous amount to me," says Shister. "I've been with the organization since the first year, I consider it my baby. I watched it grow, and I'm fiercely protective of it." That first year was 1990, a few years after Shister became the first woman sportswriter at the New Orleans States-Item and later at the Philadelphia Inquirer. She was also among the first "out" reporters. "For somebody like me, who has been out professionally since 1974, it's difficult to describe what it's like in an organization of professional journalists who are gay," she says. "I never thought I'd see that, because for so many years I was the only one. It's real, strong, robust and growing." It's growing so much, that, as announced this week, the first "out" anchor on cable news in prime time, Rachel Maddow, is set to debut next month. What does Shister think the move means? McKay, Buckley, Snow to be Honored at Documentary EmmysThe National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has just announced it will posthumously honor ABC Sports legend Jim McKay at this year's News & Documentary Emmy Awards. McKay, who died in May, is the father of CBS News & Sports president Sean McManus. NBC Sports dedicated Friday's production of the Beijing opening ceremony to McKay. NBC Sports & Olympics Chairman Dick Ebersol was a producer at the 1972 Munich games, during which McKay remained on the air for 16 hours as the Israeli hostage crisis unfolded. The Academy will also offer tributes to William F. Buckley who died in February and Tony Snow, who died last month, for their contributions to the news industry. Buckley may be best known for the public affairs show "Firing Line." Snow was a print and television journalist who worked for USA Today, The Washington Times, Fox News Channel, and CNN. The ceremony is set for Sept. 22 at Time Warner Center in New York. The press release is after the jump...
