Press and the media

The media can be divided into the printed press (newspapers and magazines) and the electronic press (radio and television). Most of these media also have an Internet presence. Today, a form of the press also exists that is only distributed via Internet.

The rights of the press

In Switzerland, the freedom of the press and the right to free expression is guaranteed in the federal constitution. The role of journalists is based on specific ethical principles, which are set out clearly in the journalist’s declaration of duties and rights. A variety of complaints procedures are available to deal with disputes:
  • The Swiss Press Council is the complaints authority that deals with media-related breaches of civil law.
  • Complaints against radio and television are assessed by and independent authority called the UBI.
  • Depending on the circumstances, individuals who feel personally affected and harmed by something that has appeared in the media have the right of reply.
