POPULATION FIGURES FOR THE HORSHAM DISTRICT

Crowd of People

Population figures are largely derived from the national census, which is conducted every 10 years.  The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is responsible for collating and distributing this data, and for forecasting population growth at the national, regional and county level.

The last census took place on 29th April 2001, and the first results were published in September 2002.  Further information from the 2001 Census was published throughout 2003.  The results are available on the ONS website

West Sussex County Council (WSCC) uses this data to ascertain how many people and households there are in each district, parish and ward across the county.  This information can be viewed on the County Council’s website

Horsham District Council holds data for Horsham District from Census 1991 and Census 2001, which is available on request.  The data is broken down to district and ward level.

At the time of the Census in April 2001, the resident population of Horsham District was 122,100 people.  The latest figures published in September 2004 (ONS mid-2003 population estimates) estimated that there were 123,800 people living in the District.

West Sussex County Council’s population breakdown of Horsham District (based on the Census 2001), shows that around 37% (45,000) of the population lived in Horsham (unparished) and North Horsham.  Billingshurst, Southwater and Steyning parishes are the other main areas of population.  The remaining population lives in parishes with populations ranging from 200 to 5,000.  The generally low population in the remaining parishes is indicative of the character of Horsham District which is largely rural with many small villages.
