New Frutiger Serif Typeface Family Debuts in the Linotype Library of Typefaces

Adrian Frutiger and Akira Kobayashi Collaborate to Expand
One of the World's Most Renowned Type Families

BAD HOMBURG, Germany, & WOBURN, Mass., May 20, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Linotype GmbH, a typeface foundry and subsidiary of Monotype Imaging Holdings Inc., (Nasdaq: TYPE), a leading global provider of text imaging solutions, has introduced the Frutiger® Serif typeface family. The new 20-font offering was designed by Akira Kobayashi, type director at Linotype, and Adrian Frutiger, whose original Frutiger sans serif design ranks among the best selling fonts of all time from the Linotype® Library.

"Adrian Frutiger has earned great respect over many years as one of the world's most prominent and talented typeface designers," said Frank Wildenberg, managing director of Linotype GmbH. "It's an honor to add Frutiger Serif to the family of Linotype typefaces that bears his name."

"While Frutiger has designed some of the most widely used and aesthetically pleasing typefaces, his philosophy has never changed - that type should always be legible and pragmatic. These characteristics are evident in his abstract style that is timeless yet contemporary," said Allan Haley, director of words and letters at Monotype Imaging. "Few type designers are able to achieve this balance the way Frutiger has succeeded."

The Frutiger Serif design is based on the Meridien® typeface, one of Frutiger's first, released in 1957. Some of the earliest letterpress specimens of the original Meridien design still exist, which served as inspiration for the Frutiger Serif project. "I have a deep appreciation for the metal version of Meriden, which is quite different than the digital version," said Kobayashi, who with the support of Frutiger redrew and expanded the Meridien design to create Frutiger Serif. "The spirit of Meridien is still evident in Frutiger Serif, which incorporates elegant serifs, gentle curves and arcs. We added weights, widths and styles that not only come closer to Frutiger's original Meridien but also harmonize with several of Frutiger's sans serif faces." The Frutiger Serif typeface family is available in five weights ranging from light to heavy, and all weights are available in both regular and condensed versions. Each has a corresponding italic, in addition to a condensed italic. The Frutiger Serif fonts support 48 western, central and eastern European languages, including Baltic and Turkish. The fonts are available in the OpenType® cross-platform format and include OpenType features such as ligatures, small caps and several numerical figures.

Individual Frutiger fonts, selection packs and typeface families can be viewed, purchased and downloaded from www.linotype.com, www.fonts.com and www.faces.co.uk. Customers may contact Linotype at +49 (0) 6172 484-418, or Monotype Imaging in the U.S. toll-free at 800-424-8973, or in Europe at (+44 0)1737 765959, or 001781 970-6020, option 2. Customers from other parts of the world may dial 001 781 970-6020 (U.S.).

The initial Frutiger typeface was originally designed by Frutiger for the Charles-de-Gaulle Airport in Paris in the 1970s. In 1997, he completed the Frutiger Next family, developed for signage at the Alte Pinakothek in Munich and then becoming commercially available in 2000 as a Linotype typeface. Other variations available from the Linotype Library are the Frutiger Stones family, which incorporates the look of polished pebbles as the boundary; the Frutiger Symbols design, a family of symbol fonts; the Frutiger Capitalis design, a font containing ornamental glyphs; and Frutiger Arabic, designed by Nadine Chahine of Linotype and released last year.

Frutiger has designed other best-selling fonts from the Linotype Library, including the Univers®, Avenir® and Vectora® families. He has also created several other designs, including the Centennial®, Serifa®, Didot and the OCR-B font, an optical character recognition font used to create electronically editable text from typewritten, printed or handwritten documents.
