Rebecca Budig Bringing Greenlee Back to "All My Children"

Soap fans are going to have many returns this holiday season and we don't mean unwanted presents. In fact, they are going to be given great gifts from several daytime shows.  The network offering the most presents is ABC. Rebecca Budig heads back to "All My Children" and the role she created in 1999. Budig's character -- spoiled, conniving Greenlee -- was to be on the show for three weeks.

Budig's talent shone through and Greenlee became a long-term role, which was central to the show's storylines. In fact, she became Erica's (Susan Lucci) stepdaughter. Two years ago, Budig and her husband, Bob Guiney, moved to L.A. AMC executives decided Greenlee was still needed on the soap and cast Sabine Singh. Singh did an admirable job. However, Brian Frons, president of daytime at ABC, wanted Budig back. Frons is a hard man to turn down. Budig agreed to a one-year contract (maybe longer).

It was no easy decision for the actress. Her husband is not coming with her. He is going to help her with the cross-country move. His moving assistant will be Billy Warlock (AJ on "General Hospital," Frankie on "Days of Our Lives" and most recently, Ben on "Young and Restless"). This move has Laurel and Hardy potential.

When Budig returns to the show, Greenlee will face a medical crisis.

Sarah Brown, who created the role of Carly on "General Hospital," is returning to the show, but not as Carly. Laura Wright is currently doing an amazing job as the self-serving Carly. Brown, who is not there for the long haul, is going to play a new character. Many think she will be tied up in the Zacchara crime story. Perhaps she will be Logan's mother.

On "As the World Turns" Brown (as Julia) played opposite Kin Shriner's Keith, who also stars on "General Hospital" as Scotty. It would be interesting to see her team up with Shriner, who has been revealed as Logan's estranged biological dad.

There is a downside. To make room for the presents, some ornaments will be leaving the family tree. Major characters are going to be written off the soap canvas at ABC. Look for the Text-Message Killer to claim the lives of some more major and minor characters. AMC and OLTL are also going to say "so long" to a few beloved characters.

The shiniest gift of all comes from "Days of Our Lives." Drake Hogestyn returns as John. We know -- John is dead. The folk at "Days" have no respect for the dead; they keep coming back to life. No word on when we next see John but a good bet would be February sweeps. The show is also bringing back Renee Jones (Lexie) for a major storyline in early 2008.
