Lewis Hamilton was crowned International Racing Driver of the Year at the Autosport Awards in London on Sunday evening.

Hamilton took the prestigious award for the second year in a row, after a monumental season saw him become Formula 1’s youngest ever world champion.

Hamilton has a long-standing relationship with the Autosport Awards, having caught the attention of McLaren boss Ron Dennis at the ceremony over a decade ago.

When asked how it felt to receive the award for the second time running, the McLaren star reminisced about his journey to the top.

"It's kind of overwhelming,” he said.

"To receive an award, any award, is always a major privilege, and holding this one, it reminds me of all the times I've been to the Autosport Awards before, even my first time.

"To see what a journey it's been and see the number of people that have made it possible for me makes me very proud."

It has been a groundbreaking year for the 23-year-old from Stevenage, who pipped Felipe Massa to the F1 title by a single point after a dramatic showdown in Brazil.

Hamilton scored five victories overall this season, with memorable wet-weather drives at Monaco and Silverstone and seven pole positions.

Next weekend Hamilton will be appearing at the Race of Champions at Wembley Stadium before going to the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year awards where he will be a strong contender for the top prize.
