“She has lost none of her capacity to thrill listeners."
— Bill Milkowski
Jazz fans rejoiced in 2004 when pianist-organist Alice Coltrane
released Translinear Light (Verve), her first studio
album in 27 years. Still heavily influenced by the eastern musical
motifs and profound spirituality found on the classic ’70s
albums Ptah the El Daoud and Transfiguration,
the Ravi Coltrane-produced Light marked the stunning
re-emergence of what jazz critic Leonard Feather described as
Coltrane’s “force and grandeur [and] a very special
sense of esthetic universality.”
This rare concert appearance is made even more momentous by
her backing band, which includes her son Ravi, bassist Charlie
Haden and drummer Roy Haynes. Both Haden and Haynes have strong
ties to both her and her late husband, John. It should prove
to be a memorable, moving communion.
