Temperatures plunge, and area preps for snow

More News

With winds blowing from the Gulf of Mexico traded in for those gusting down from Canada on Sunday, Kansas City shivered and braced.

Temperatures dropped 29 degrees in a single hour this morning — from 60 degrees at 10 a.m. to just below freezing by 11 — amid a forecast for sleet and light snow around nightfall.

“Temperature drops like that probably happen just a handful of times during the year. We don’t know for sure because our recording keeping doesn’t go that deep,” said Scott Blair, a National Weather Service meteorologist. “But when it does happen, it’s usually cold already so it’s not as noticeable. This was big and noticeable.”

The change came because Saturday’s warm but windy weather in Kansas City was the result of strong winds blowing warm air in from the south. But come Sunday, the breezes turned an about face to blast freezing air from Canada down through the Missouri River Valley.

And that prompted road crews across the region to prepare for at least the possibility of nasty driving conditions.

In Overland Park, for instance, crews set out to coat major streets with a mix of salt and calcium chloride, and residential streets with a mix that also included sand to make the materials stretch farther.

“There was some moisture on the roads this morning and more coming, so we wanted to spread a pretreatment so all of that doesn’t freeze,” said Brian Hutchinson, a street maintenance supervisor for the city.

Monday’s commute, at least as of Sunday afternoon, didn’t appear too ominous. Forecasters were expecting only about an inch of snow in a storm that would come and go by midnight — giving road crews plenty of time to clear roads for commuters.
