October 27, 2008 - Mega Man 3, heralded as one of the best of the original 8-bit series, arrives on mobile in a remarkably accurate port that should have the Blue Bomber's base quite happy. While not pixel perfect, this NES-to-mobile platformer is a considerable challenge and will keep your thumbs busy for several hours before you even hope to see the final screen.

As with his previous adventures, Mega Man must strike out against Dr. Wily and his rogues gallery of robot masters. Each robot master has a catchy theme, such as Snake Man and Shadow Man. After rushing through a multi-screen level of platforming and shooting, Mega Man must defeat the boss robot and claim its weapon. Mega Man can then use this weapon against the other robot masters. The weapons operate on a rock-paper-scissors plane. One weapon is particularly good against a specific boss robot, so depending on which robot master you beat first (it's your choice), you move through the different stages in different orders.

Mega Man is also joined by a robot dog named Rush that helps him jump. This is the first game is the series to feature Rush, and the canine went on to be a permanent companion to help with jumping and other tasks. Mega Man 3 also marks the introduction of the slide maneuver, used to slip through trouble spots.

Mega Man 3 is a precision platformer, requiring a steady hand when jumping through the air or targeting robot enemies. As expected, that is not always possible on a cellphone since the number pad or D-pad is not conducive to twitch gaming. Still, Mega Man 3 is entirely playable. And the addition of a save feature is welcomed.

The production vales are commendable. The game really goes look like the NES classic and the music sounds just as good as it did back in the eighties. If you are an 8-bit fan, this is a great representation of the era for your mobile phone.

Closing Comments
Mega Man 3 is a solid remake of the NES classic. The visuals and sound are deliciously 8-bit. My one caveat is the control, which can be tricky depending on your handset. You may botch a jump while fumbling with the controls, and that can indeed lead to some naughty, naughty language uttered in very public places.
