Lakewood Antiques Market is This Weekend

Friday January 16, 2009

Just because the unique halls just south of the city at Lakewood Amphitheater have closed their doors doesn't mean you have nowhere to turn for your antiques. Many of the vendors have moved north to Lakewood 400, the Cumming antique market run by the same folks behind the classic Lakewood show. Hundreds of dealers fill the 75,000 square foot facility to show their wares.

The market is only open the third weekend of each month. The January show begins today and runs through Sunday. Head north and seek out vintage jewelry, one-of-a-kind furniture and a bevy of interesting knick-knacks. Admission is $3, cash only, which gets you in all weekend.

Lakewood 400
1321 Atlanta Highway, Cumming, GA 30040
Friday: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Saturday: 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Sunday: 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Half Price Tickets for Miss Evers' Boys

Thursday January 15, 2009

No need to miss out on Atlanta's cultural opportunities due to cost - the folks at True Colors Theatre Company are coming to your rescue. Opening March 4, Miss Ever's Boys tells the story of the real-life Tuskegee Study, when over 300 African-American men were denied treatment for syphilis by the federal government as part of an inhumane clinical study. The play is written through the eyes of a nurse who tried to help a group of the men.

Though the show doesn't take to the stage until March, if you purchase tickets before February 1 you can get them at half price for only $16. Tickets are available online or by calling 404-588-0234. Use the code STIMULUS to get your discount.

Really, Atlanta? Jimmy Carter’s Bike Stolen.

Monday January 12, 2009

The AJC reports that Jimmy Carter's bike was stolen from the Carter Center grounds earlier this month, along with his wife Rosalynn's bike. The bikes, worth approximately $1,000 each, were a gift from Outback Bikes, which has two Atlanta area locations.

“They’ve probably been sold for a $10 rock of crack,” Peter Wicker, owner of Outback Bikes, told the AJC.

In other Carter-related news, the former president will sign copies of his latest book, We Can Have Peace in the Holy Land, on January 21 at the Carter Presidential Library. The event starts at 5 p.m., but start lining up as early as 3 p.m. Be sure to tell him you're sorry about the bike.

First Impressions of Bodies: The Exhibition in Atlanta

Monday January 12, 2009

I finally had a chance to go see Bodies: The Exhibition in Atlantic Station this weekend. I was able to get tickets online just a few hours in advance of attending - they had open availability for all time slots - and thanks to my readers here for sharing the promo code for a 20% discount (use SUPERTIX at MuseumTix, not applicable for Dialog in the Dark combo ticket).

My full review is coming soon, but here are a few first impressions I wanted to share:

  • Bodies is NOT gross. Please don't miss out on this very cool exhibit because you are afraid you'll be grossed out.
  • You can get very close to most displays. I was expecting more things to be held in glass cases, but this is up close and personal.
  • After visiting both Dialog in the Dark and Bodies, I highly recommend purchasing the combo ticket to attend both exhibits. Neither takes much more than an hour and it would make for an interesting and very educational afternoon, especially if you don't live close to Atlantic Station and had to make a long trip to attend.
  • Don't forget that you can get shopping and dining discounts at Atlantic Station with your ticket stub on the day of your visit!
