College Interns to Teach Online Secondary Students

Thursday January 15, 2009
Student teaching is entering the virtual realm with a new program that allows student interns from the University of Central Florida to teach online classes from Florida Virtual School.

The University of Central Florida Newsroom reports:
"Six UCF education majors will be immersed in the virtual school environment and gain experience teaching online. During the internship, they will work closely with FLVS teachers, providing direct instruction via webinars and meeting with middle- or high-school students and their families via conference calls. The interns also will interact with other online teachers and teaching teams at FLVS and grade student work."
The program seems like a smart way to give potential teachers hands-on experience with online classrooms. Even seasoned instructors can flounder when directing a virtual course, which is often an extremely different experience from what they've come to know.

The interns will also complete several weeks of student teaching at a regular campus.

Write Group Papers Online with MixedInk

Wednesday January 14, 2009
I recently stumbled across a new website, MixedInk, that makes group writing projects a breeze. If you need to write an essay with peers from an online class, you'll definitely want to give it a look. (Did I mention it's also free?)

Basically, the site lets you create a document, invite participants, and track edits. Different versions are automatically saved and users can vote on which version is the best.

Web-based document programs such as Google Docs already make group writing projects easier than mass emails. But, this new site seems to take it a step further.

Microsoft's "Ultimate Steal" for Students

Monday January 12, 2009
If you're considering updating your software, you may want to take a look at Microsoft's deal for students: The Ultimate Steal. Basically, if you can prove you're a college student, they'll give you an entire suite of programs for $59. That includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and several others.

Be sure to check with your college before buying this (or any other software program). Although it's a big savings from the regular price, some universities have contracts that allow their students software licenses at no cost.
