Gegard Mousasi is the MMA Fighter of the Year

There were plenty of MMA fighters worthy of note in 2008. But only one of them went 6-0, won the DREAM Middleweight Grand Prix, and stopped both Melvin Manhoef and Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza in the same year.

Jeff Monson Charged With Felony Mischief

Friday January 16, 2009
According to the Olympian , former UFC heavyweight contender Jeff Monson has been charged with first-degree malicious mischief for vandalizing the Washington State Capital (a Class B felony). In late December, a photograph of him spray painting the anarchist symbol on the government building was taken and published in ESPN The Magazine.

Monson claims that the action was done to protest the war in Iraq and economic inequality in America and abroad. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.

For a man that once decided to come out to "Imagine" by John Lennon before his fight with Tim Sylvia, the decision to protest is not surprising. But the potential punishment for it is probably greater than he originally anticipated.

Jackie Chan Will Play Mr. Miyagi in New Karate Kid

Thursday January 15, 2009
According to EW, Jackie Chan will play Mr. Miyagi in a remake of The Karate Kid by Sony Pictures. He will serve as the mentor to 10 year old Jaden Smith, son of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. The movie will film entirely in China.

Another Karate Kid is sure to spark some curiosity, and it will be interesting to see the spin that Chan puts on the old Pat Morita character. On the other hand, it sure will be hard for this film to live up to the old one. In other words, there's a distinct possibility that the new version of this film might be another one of those 'wish they hadn't made it' remakes.

Kind of like Planet of the Apes, you know? So it's wait and see time for Karate Kid fans.

Matt Serra vs. Matt Hughes on May 23

Tuesday January 13, 2009
According to MMAWeekly , former UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Serra has said that he will be fighting Matt Hughes on May 23, 2009. To say the least, it's been a longtime coming.

While competing as coaches on TUF 6, the two constantly spoke poorly of one another. This wasn't staged distaste, either. They legitimately appeared to dislike one another, which led to a lot of anticipation regarding what was supposed to have been a TUF coach vs. TUF coach match at UFC 70 between them. Unfortunately, Serra had to pull out because of injury. Since then several factors have kept this fight from happening for more than a year.

But in May it appears that this old score will finally be settled. Both of these guys are excellent fighters with a true chip on their shoulder regarding their adversary. They're both named Matt. They're both former UFC Welterweight Champions.

It should truly be something to see.

Boy Applies Rear Naked Choke to Pit Bull

Sunday January 11, 2009
Nine year old Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner Drew Heredia is a hero.

In a move that seems more likely to be found in a Jackie Chan movie than real life, Heredia saved a 12 year old girl from a pit bull by holding the animal in a rear naked choke hold he learned from Bakersfield Jiu Jitsu (California) until authorities arrived.

Talk about courage.

Apparently, Heredia and his female neighbor were out getting the mail when a pit bull attacked the girl’s dachshund. When the girl tried to step in, the pit bull started attacking her instead. That’s when the nine year old took matters into his own hands, taking the dog’s back and applying the choke for more than 20 minutes until Animal Control finally arrived.

“He was moving really hard, like one of those rodeo bulls,” Heredia said, according to an article at Living in the Whine Country . “Then he went limp (during the choke).”

Amazing!
