Ugly Hill Will Return on Jan. 5th Tuesday, December 30, 2008
Until further notice, Ugly Hill will be updating three times a week instead of five, on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Why? Because I can't keep up with myself anymore. I am such a slave driver. But I did let myself throw another piece of coal on the fire on Christmas Day this year, so things might be looking up.

Retrospective Friday, December 12, 2008
Every once in a while, usually when I'm feeling too good about myself, I like to dive back into the archives and review how Ugly Hill used to look. And times like these, when I run old strips during a break, I have no choice. Well this time I got to thinking about Hastings, and how is design has changed over time. People's Exhibit A:
As you can see, there was a big leap between 2005 and 2006, but since then it's been pretty consistent, and you know what that means: stagnation! My worst nightmare. I've been wanting to make some minor changes for a while now, and this is just the slap in the face I needed. I give you People's Exhibit B: The Proposal:
Here's a rundown of the changes, however minor: 1) The eyes are smaller. Sometimes I feel like Hastings' eyes are so big, they've got nowhere to go when I need to show emotion, and they usually end up breaking the laws of physics to do so. Not that I don't enjoy doing that, but I feel starting off smaller might give him a more varied range of emotions. I'm not sure about this one yet. I don't want to make them TOO small, because then they'll be LESS expressive. Gotta find the sweet spot. 2) The collar is more realistic. I've always thought that Hastings looked a little flat, and the collar doesn't help. It looks pasted on, like a formal Colorform® or something. I've wanted to adjust it for a long time, and there it is. 3) The tie is solid red, no stripes. Looking back at those old strips made me realize that the lines on the tie are distracting, a needless detail. Consider them gone. 4) The rest are just minor construction changes; A more curved, organic nose, a shorter, stubbier body, skinner legs, bigger feet, etc.
This is a work in progress, but I just wanted to share my thoughts with you in lieu of, you know, actual content.

Comments! I have comments! Oh, the comments I have. Tuesday, December 09, 2008
If I remember correctly, I named the members of "Skulldrift" in this strip after some of the band members of "Ugly Kid Joe", for obvious reasons. I think I may have combined them with some members from another band, but the point is this: in my opinion, every metal band should have at least one member with a creepy, German-sounding last name. Preferably the lead guitar player. Don't ask me why, it just feels right.
Oh, and if you want commentary regarding the artwork: BLEAUGH.
