PLAYERS ALL OKAY AFTER BIG WIN

By Wayne Cousins

Wests Tigers players Robbie Farah, Chris Lawrence and Chris Heighington have come through unscathed after representing the Prime Minister's XIII team against Papua New Guinea on Sunday, September 28.

The Australian team recorded a 54-30 victory over the Kumuls at Lloyd Robson Oval. Lawrence scored two of the Australians' 10 tries while Farah also crossed for a four-pointer.

Australia led 22-16 at half-time in a match played in hot and windy conditions.

For Farah and Lawrence, it was their second time representing their country in Papua New Guinea. Farah represented the PM's XIII in 2006 and Lawrence in 2007.

The selection of Heighington follows his debut for Country Origin this season. It was the first time the hard-working second-rower had pulled on a green and gold jersey.

"It was a really tough game and the field was like cement," Farah said.

"I was a bit nervous before the game as to how my back was going to hold up because I haven't played for a while, especially at hooker too.

"I've pulled up fairly well. All three of us have.

"My try came off the back of a break by 'Rowdy' (Lawrence). I was happy with my performance. I kicked a couple of 40/20s and set up a couple of tries.

"All I can do now is wait and see if my name is called out for Australia for the World Cup.

"If I am selected, it will be a great honour. If not, I will enjoy a holiday for a few weeks before getting stuck back in to training and preparing for next season."

Farah said Heighington just picked up from where he finished the season with Wests Tigers - in fine form.

"Heighny went really well considering he had to play in the front row," Farah said.

"It was your typical Chris Heighington performance, just lots of hard work and strong running. He was again impressive. He has been all year.

"I don't think we need to worry about him moving to the front row. He is too much of a good sort for that. He has a bit of a busted nose, so he will be more than happy to go back to the second-row."

Farah said Lawrence was unlucky not to have recorded a hat-trick of tries.

"Chris scored two tries and went really well at centre and on the wing," Farah said.

Heighington also praised his Wests Tigers team-mates on their performances.

"Robbie showed great speed and he got through the line a couple of times," Heighington said.

"Chris went really well, too. He killed them out wide.

"It was a hard, very physical, rough contest.

"I didn't mind playing in the front row. I knew that was going to be the case as there were no props on the bench. I played about 45 minutes after coming on around the 10 minute mark.

"The fans here are fanatical. They really love their rugby league and they cheered for both teams."

Heighington said the trip around the villages the day before the match had been an experience. The players spoke of the importance of HIV and AIDS prevention methods.

"You wouldn't think you were only 90 minutes from Cairns by plane. It really is a third world country," he said.

"It was a real eye opener and when you see where people live and the conditions they face, it makes you appreciate what we have back home."
