Gino Gard


Named Gino Gardassanich at birth, but his name was shortened to Gino Gard after he came to the United States in 1949.

Born: November 26, 1922 - Fiume, Italy
Position: Goalkeeper

Played for Fiumana and Reggina in Italy before crossing the Atlantic. In Chicago he played for the Slovak club from 1949 to 1959 and played in the U.S. Amateur Cup final in 1953. He won the Montgomery Trophy as most valuable goalie in 1950. During his tenure, the Slovaks won the Nielsen Trophy as Major Division Indoor champion. He was the goalkeeper for a Chicago All-Star team which played against Hamburger SV of Germany in Chicago on May 10, 1950. Originally first choice goalkeeper for the 1950 World Cup team he made the trip to Brazil but didn't see any action in the three games played by the U.S.  Also a very good water polo player. Inducted into the Illinois Hall of Fame in 1992.
