Thor Stalli

Oak stalli arranged for a ritual to Thor.

White and red oak leaves under glass decorate the stalli.

Here is the stalli set up for a Thor's Blot. You can see the hammer on its whet stone "stand". This whetstone has a chip off one corner. In one Thor myth, He ends up with a whetstone fragment lodged in His forehead. Next to the hammer is a globe of azurite, that looks like the Earth. It sits on a ring of jade. Earth is Thor's Mother, and He is the foremost God-protector of Midgarð. Since lightning strikes oak trees more often than any other tree, and because of the tree's strength, it belongs to Thor, God of Lightning and Thunder. The table itself is of white oak. Under the glass of the hörgr are leaves of the white and red oak. Red is a colour I associate with the Thunderer: the cloth behind the altar is red wool felt from Austria, gifted to me by a lovely lady, the Countess Cis Zoltowska, bless her heart. It is from her childhood castle in Wien, where it was used in the 1930's as a cloth for the base of the Christmas tree (a Germanic traditional Yggdrasil!). Below you see a couple of other Thor's stallar. The green spiral cloth represents the life-giving properties of Thor's rain showers, as does the jar with red and green spirals. On the stalli is my clan tartan, a link to my ancestors. This stalli arrangement is used to draw the vitality and warding of Thor to my family and to the Land. By the Thor's hammer is a lode stone, a natural magnet, which belongs to Thor. The vibrant patterns of tartan, spirals, and the colours red and green all suggest the dynamism and vibrations of the life force, so powerfully represented by the God Thor.

Thor stalli set up for a ritual to grant Thor's gifts of vitality to my family and to the Earth.

The stalli by candlelight.
