Teen Girl Arrested After Attacking Fellow Student With Scissors At SF School

Wednesday, January 14, 2009 – updated: 12:11 am PST January 15, 2009

A 14-year-old female student is under arrest and another 14-year-old female student is recovering from wounds after she says she was attacked at a school in San Francisco.

Police are still looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident at Marina Middle School. The girl who was wounded says she was sitting in a classroom when she was attacked by a fellow student.

14-year-old Ellisa Herron is recovering tonight from several wounds she says she suffered yesterday when another 14-year-old female student rushed up to her during an English class and slashed her with a pair of scissors.

The victim's mother says witnesses were stunned and at first did nothing while her daughter was wrestled to the floor and struck at least eight times.

"The girl could've killed my daughter and I don't appreciate that," said Rachel Lewis. "I hope something will happen for that. She got her in the head, she got her in the chest and she got her in the back. She got stitches in her back 'cause it was pretty real. She got like four wounds in her head and all on her arms and everything. And I don't understand how that could happen when she's in school."

School officials say a security guard was called in and the suspect was taken away and charged with assault.

The teenaged victim was treated and released at a local hospital and barely spoke because of the effects of pain medication. What she did say was that the teacher did not intercede.

The school principal did not order a lockdown, and instead went on the public address system to reassure students that they were safe.

"They said there's no, like, people that got hurt. No matter what you heard or anything, no one got hurt," said student Jonathon Allen.

But school and police officials say there were injuries, making this an unusually violent incident. They aren't certain whether the suspect was armed with the scissors before entering the classroom or if they were taken from the teacher's desk. But they say every part of the school's security was functioning.

Officials also say the teacher wasn't the only adult in the room at the time of the attack.

"Based on our initial investigation there were three adults in the room at the time," said SF Unified School District spokesperson Heidi Anderson.

School officials say Marina is generally one of the safer public schools in the city. But some parents are concerned that they weren't notified about this latest incident.

"Why wasn't I informed of this? It's serious enough something like that that a message should go out, should go home to allay the parents' fears" said Marina Middle School parent Shelley Mason.

Because the suspect is a minor her name isn't being released.
