Originally scheduled for May 1980, this LP was to have been the first commercially available sampler from IRS. However, the LP (planned for vinyl only as all IRS releases of the time were) was never released. It has been mentioned that the mail-order collection IRS GREATEST HITS VOL 1 may have been the LP originally scheduled as DOING TIME ON VINYL...

This special promo was available for a VERY limited time via an offer enclosed in the double LP I.R.S. GREATEST
HITS VOLS 2 & 3. It is possible that this record was the one-time scheduled (but never released) DOING
TIME ON VINYL. While all the material was available elsewhere in the I.R.S. universe, this was Badowski's first
appearance on a US LP and the only way Berlin's "Matter Of Time", as sung by Virginia Macolino, appeared on
an LP...
Track Listing:
This is the grandaddy sampler of all samplers from I.R.S.! Four sides of great stuff, tons of rarities and (as one critic put it) at least "one tune on each side to piss you off."
The packaging is a swell feature as well! The gatefold is a montage of images and features nearly every artist on the set. Why, if you search closely you can even find the great and powerful Miles Copeland III! Twice!! In addition, the inner sleeves are not only color-coordinated with the labels, but they contain all sorts of info on the bands and the sort of wry humor you'd expect from I.R.S.! For example: the note for "Wait For The Blackout" closes with, "...best Damned Song on the album -- pun intended." Those funny I.R.S. folks!
There were also two different covers (as shown above). The version with the girl on it is identical in every way to the other except Klark Kent is spelled Klerk Kant, As in "Klerk Kan't Use that other name..." Probably in reaction to the potential threat of the Warner Company taking legal action. Warner controls DC Comics and is VERY protective of their trademarks, particularly Superman and his alter-ego, Clark Kent. However the spelling change must've been enough to make the threat moot and Klark Kent got to remain Klark Kent, and continued to record sporadically (when he wasn't busy doing work under his real name, that is)! A swell collection no 80's music enthusiast should be without, no matter which cover you select (or can find)! Highly recommended.
Above, to the right, is the cover image of the UK Illegal Records single-disc version of the collection which contained cuts 1, 4-6, 11, 13, 17, 19, 20 and 24 with Chelsea's "I'm On Fire" instead of "Urban Kids". A twelfth track on the UK version is Wall Of Voodoo's "Can't Make Love".

A European sampler -- no apparent US release. DJ Dusty Street of the world famous KROQ in Los Angeles, hosts this presentation of

good selection of tunes, too.
