Overall sales slump knocks Idols back a peg

Easter week was good for the music biz, but this past week saw a substantial decline in album sales, and the Idols were by no means immune. All of the Idols on the Billboard chart are emphatically down in sales, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Jordin becomes the highest-ranking Idol on the chart, jumping from No. 29 to No. 25. That was accomplished, however, with an accompanying 28% drop in sales, less than many other neighboring albums. She sold 17,000 for a total of 612,000.

Similarly, Daughtry held his/its ground at No. 27, but dropped 33% to 17,000 (actually around 500 fewer than Jordin, but rounded off they both become 17,000). His total is 3.92 million -- about 75,000 away from 4 million.

Carrie's Carnival Ride drops 15-37 thanks to a 58% plunge to the mid-15,000s. Total is 1.98 million -- she's just 22,000 away from 2 million. Some Hearts falls 51-60 with a 36% drop in sales to 10,000 and a total of 6.35 million.

Kellie falls 146-172, dropping 36% to 3,700 for a total of 738,000.

Randy's album falls off the chart and will dealt with along with the other non-charting Idols in what follows.

Randy's Idol-inclusive album sold 2,600, down from 6,500, for a three-week total of 22,000.

Kelly's Breakaway sold 2,400, down from 3,500, for a total of 5.97 million. My December sold 1,000, down from 1,500, total 759,000. By special request for Michael Lopez, Thankful sold 800 and totals 2.7 million. He also asked for a couple of download totals for two of Kelly's songs -- Never Again is at 953,000, Walk Away at 922,000.

Blake sold 2,000, or half of last week's 4,000, for a total of 284,000. As I mentioned, it was a tough week for sales.

Bucky sold 1,200, down from 1,600, total: 333,000.

Elliott sold 1,000, down from 1,500, total: 502,000.

Kimberley, who appeared on the results show last week, sold 900, up from 100, for a total of 19,000. So, depending on your outlook, you can view that as a fantastic percentage increase (unrounded, it was nearly 800%) or as something like nearly 30 million saw the show and fewer than 1,000 were moved to buy her album. Her airplay/sales disconnect still seems extreme to me.

Mandisa sold 500, down from 600, for a total of 75,000.

Fantasia sold 400, down from 500, total 510,000.

Bo sold 400, down from 500, total 43,000.

Katharine sold 300, down from 400, total 369,000.

Clay sold 200, same as last week, for a total of 524,000.

Only three members of the 100 club this week. Taylor dropped from 200; total is 701,000. Ruben and Constantine remained constant at 100; Ruben's sold 237,000 total, Constantine 25,000.

Paris slipped under the 100 mark this week and remains at 21,000. As I said, tough week.

Downloads shortly.
