Carmike ups the ‘Rent’; Cinemark sings opera

Sure, you can get a little “Tropic Thunder” or “Iron Man” in movie theaters these days.

But you can also get your hands on a little opera, a wrestling event, a Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana concert, or a little Broadway, too.

Carmike Cinemas is opting for a little Broadway next week with its presentation of the Broadway smash, “Rent,” presented by Sony Pictures Releasing’s special programming division, The Hot Ticket. And then Cinemark 14 in Parker Square will open its 11-show The Met: Live in HD series Monday with “The Opening Gala,” featuring performances by Renee Fleming.

n “RENT: FILMED LIVE ON BROADWAY” will be shown at Carmike’s Sikes 10 Theatres in the mall Wednesday and Thursday, as well as Sept. 27-28.

“Rent” recently ended its 12-year run on Broadway, and this presentation in movie theaters, will mark that historic occasion.

“This is the first time that a Broadway show has been available in movie theaters across the U.S. and Canada, and I can’t think of a better occasion than the closing of ‘Rent,’” said Rory Bruer, president of Sony Pictures Releasing. “It’s the show that defined Broadway for a generation …”

“Rent,” a Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical, ended its Broadway run on Sept. 7. The company @radical.media captured the evening using the latest high-definition video anf digital audio technology.

This “cinecast” of “Rent,” directed by Michael Warren, will be unlike watching the Broadway show live, in that not only will audiences see the performance as if they were in the best seats in the Nederlander Theatre, but from the stage and wings, too.

“As groundbreaking as ‘Rent’ was in its Broadway debut, it is a privilege for us to be part of bringing it in an innovative way to the screen,” said @radical.media CEO Jon Kamen.

The presentation will feature Will Chase as Roger, Adam Kantor as Mark, Michael McElroy as Tom, Rodney Hicks as Benjamin, Tracie Thom sans Joanne, Justin Johnston as Angel, Renee Elise Goldsberry as Mimi, and Eden Espinoza as Maureen. Michael Grief, who stage-directed the original production of “Rent,” returns to stage-direct the final production.

Anthony Rapp, an original cast member of “Rent,” said, “For the many ‘Rent’ fans across the country who love the show but never got to see it on Broadway and at the Nederlander Theatre, it’s great that the cinecast will get them as close as possible to that magical experience without actually being there.”

n In addition to “Rent,” theater-goers this week can catch the transmission of THE MET’S OPENING NIGHT GALA. It is just the first of 11 transmissions of The Metropolitan Opera season of shows.

For the season-opener, Renee Fleming will star in full-staged performances of scenes from three different operas: Verdi’s “La Traviata” (Act II), Massenet’s “Manon” (Act III), and the final scene from Richard Strauss’ “Capriccio.”

Fleming’s co-stars will be tenor Ramon Vargas and baritones Thomas Hampson and Dwayne Croft.

Marco Armiliato will conduct the show.

This is the second season that Cinemark 14 in Parker Square will carry the high-definition opera series.

Following the Opening Night Gala, the season will also include “Salome” Oct. 11 and Oct. 22, “Doctor Atomic” Nov. 8 and Nov. 19, “La Damnation de Faust” Nov. 22 and Dec. 3, “Thais” Dec. 20 and Jan. 7, “La Rondine” Jan. 10 and Jan. 21, “Orfeo ed Euridice” Jan. 24 and Feb. 4, “Lucia di Lammermoor” Feb. 7 and Feb. 18, “Madama Butterfly’ March 7 and March 18, “La Sonnambula” March 21 and April 1, and “La Cenerentola” May 9 and May 20.
