New shows: Weezer, Jay-Z, Brad Paisley, Fab Four

Weezer is finally on a roll again.

First there was the band’s outstanding set at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, where it blew away headliner Blink-182. Then came an even more jubilant Hollywood Palladium show, just as Rivers Cuomo & Co. were about to release their thoroughly enjoyable new album Raditude, a considerable improvement over last year’s woefully uneven self-titled Red Album.

Now they’re returning to Orange County, to headline Jan. 11 at UCI’s Bren Events Center. Tickets, $47.50, go on sale Saturday, Nov. 14, at 10 a.m.

Jay-Z just delivered another powerhouse performance last weekend at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion — but before it even happened he had announced yet another L.A. show, March 26 at Staples Center on his BP3 Tour 2010. (BP3 = Blueprint 3, if you were confused.) Young Jeezy will open this time. Tickets go on sale Saturday at 10 a.m.

Country superstar Brad Paisley’s previously mentioned Feb. 19 stop at Staples Center also goes on sale Saturday at that time. For this leg, the lightning-fast guitar-picker will have Miranda Lambert and Justin Moore for openers. Those with reason to travel to Central Cali should note that the bill also plays Feb. 18 at Fresno’s SaveMart Center.

Beatles tribute act the Fab Four will spend New Year’s Eve at the Grove of Anaheim. Tickets, $40-$60, go on sale Saturday at noon. And speaking of ringing in Jan. 1: if you’re headed to Vegas to do so, Maroon 5 will be headlining at the Pearl at the Palms Casino & Resort. Those tickets, $125-$250, also go on sale Saturday at noon.

Heard that old friends and long-ago Troubadour co-headliners James Taylor and Carole King have announced plans to tour together next year? Look for them May 14 at the Hollywood Bowl, likely as part of the landmark venue’s subscriber series.

New shows: U2 at Angel Stadium, John Mayer, Stevie Wonder, Lady Gaga makes it three at Nokia

November 5th, 2009, 1:54 am by BEN WENER, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

bono

We start this week with things we already know but are now going on sale — chiefly, U2 at Angel Stadium on June 6.

That 360° Tour second-leg stop, the band’s first stadium appearance in Orange County (wrong: Zoo TV played there in ‘92), was announced the day after last month’s massive Rose Bowl show, the love-it-or-loathe-it response to which suggests not all U2 fans are so thrilled that Bono & Co. have returned to playing enormous spaces.

Regardless, tickets go on sale Monday, Nov. 9, at 10 a.m. There will be an opening act, to be named later.

Meanwhile, local dates of Bon Jovi’s previously discussed 2010-11 outing, The Circle World Tour — Feb. 26 at Honda Center and March 4 at Staples Center — both go on sale Nov. 16 at 10 a.m.

John Mayer may be dropping Battle Studies, his fourth studio album (and first in three years), on Nov. 17 — but his tour behind it, kicking off Feb. 8 in Charleston, S.C., won’t arrive in Southern California until March 25, at Staples Center. Michael Franti + Spearhead, finally catching fire in the mainstream via “Say Hey,” will open.

Tickets are likely to go on sale Nov. 21, though an American Express card-holder pre-sale runs Nov. 16-20. Also visit Mayer’s official site before Nov. 10 to pre-order the new album and gain access to an exclusive pre-sale that allows you to purchase up to 12 tickets.

Lady Gaga is just mega right now — two Nokia Theatre shows sold out, so she’s added a third, Dec. 23. As with the other nghts, Kid Cudi opens. Tickets, $19.75-$79.75, are on sale now.

Also at Nokia Theatre: A Wonder Winter’s Night Presents Stevie’s 14th Annual House Full of Toys Beneift Concert, which is a really wordy way of telling you Stevie Wonder is playing Dec. 12 with several special guests — including Jonas Brothers. (Maybe this time Joe — is it Joe? Nick? Tito? I couldn’t care less — will remember the words to “Superstition.”) Tickets, $45.25-$149.75, go on sale Friday at 10 a.m.

More shows: Demetri Martin, Placebo, Regina Spektor, Dr. Dog

July 8th, 2009, 12:18 am by BEN WENER, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

ap081209075969The first half of this week’s haul came in before the Michael Jackson memorial. The rest arrived during. Part Deux, then …

The Grove of Anaheim has added shows from the opposite ends of the hip spectrum. Far to the now side is Comedy Central star Demetri Martin (pictured), he of Important Things with Demetri Martin and the forthcoming film Taking Woodstock, who will appear at the venue on Aug. 30, $35.

Far toward yesteryear, on the other hand, is Billy Squier, he of “The Stroke” and “Everybody Wants You,” who plays Le Grove on Sept. 23, $32.50-$49.50. Both shows go on sale Saturday, July 11, at noon. Both will have opening acts to be named later.

Club Nokia has a quartet of new dates: English trio Placebo, touring behind its sixth album Battle for the Sun, Sept. 20, $29.50 … the mighty Motorhead with Reverend Horton Heat and Chelsea Girls, Oct. 9, $36.50 … Christian rock band Skillet with Hawk Nelson, Decyfer Down and Breaking the Silence, Oct. 23, $17.50-$45 … and the Black Crowes with Truth & Salvage Co., Nov. 28, $48.50-$55. All of those go on sale Friday at 10 .am.

The wonderful Dr. Dog, makers of one of 2008’s best albums (Fate), will headline Oct. 6 at the Music Box at the Fonda in Hollywood, $20, on sale Saturday at 10.

Meanwhile, several of the band’s Park the Van label mates — Tuscon’s Golden Boots (whose The Winter of Our Discotheque is well worth hearing), the North Carolinians of Floating Action and New Orleans’ Generationals will drift into Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa on July 30, $10. Leonard Cohen adds second show, Get Up Kids to play Troub

March 5th, 2009, 3:31 pm by BEN WENER, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

Now you’ve got two chances: Even before his April 10 gig at Nokia Theatre goes on sale, Leonard Cohen has added a second date at the L.A. Live venue, April 11. Both shows go on sale Monday at 10 a.m.

You can keep Fall Out Boy, Metro Station, Cobra Starship, Hollywood Undead — the Get Up Kids, if you ask me, are the reason to check out Day 1 of the Bamboozle Left, April 4 at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine. (Day 2, on the other hand, with mismatched 50 Cent and Deftones and Thrice filling the bill, is more compelling.)

Missing the reunited Kids is the only thing bumming me out about skipping the first half of the second annual fest and instead attending the revamped Orange County Music Awards across the way at the Grove of Anaheim. So here’s good news: as expected, the band is adding smaller extra gigs, starting with a stop at the Troubadour on April 3 … the same night several other Bamboozle bands will take part in the first West Coast Hoodwink at the Mouse House, in which every group covers someone else for an entire set.

A presale started at noon today, with buyers also having the option to select a limited-edition surprise-design Get Up Kids T-shirt. Go here to try your luck at scoring tickets. Oh, and guys, would it be too much to ask for a gig at Chain Reaction or House of Blues Anaheim?

Also just announced: Neko Case, whose latest album (Middle Cyclone) arrived this week to much praise, will play June 12 at the Greek Theatre. Stay tuned for on-sale info.

And surely you’ve heard by now that Michael Jackson will play a buhjillion shows this summer at the O2 Arena in London, right? I can’t even work up enough enthusiasm to pretend that I care.

Bamboozle Left Day 2 adds Deftones, Taking Back Sunday

February 5th, 2009, 12:31 pm by BEN WENER, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

Well, Day 2 of the second annual Bamboozle Left, April 4-5 at the festival grounds surrounding Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine just got a little better — and stranger. 50 Cent remains the headliner, but the rest of the bill just veered deeply into the heavy, with Deftones and Taking Back Sunday just added to a lineup that includes Thrice and the Used.

(That’s lead singer Chino Moreno in the pic, from the 2006 Taste of Chaos stop at Long Beach Arena. I can’t help but wonder, though, who will fill in for bassist Chi Cheng, who last we heard was either still in a coma or at least recovering from a bad car crash in early November. Perhaps he’s feeling better? The band’s next album, Eros, is due this year.)

As previously reported — although not with specific bands attached to specific days — the Saturday portion, topped by Fall Out Boy, also will feature the reunited Get Up Kids, Cobra Starship, Hollywood Undead and Metro Station. Tickets, $47.50 per day or $90 for a weekend pass, go on sale at noon Saturday, Feb. 7.
