Fair time to divide
Equalizing a couple's assets when spouses separate is a linchpin of family law, but the Ontario Court of Appeal was right to craft a narrow exception for extraordinary circumstances.
Warding off structural deficit
It is to their credit that, as part of the Federal Accountability Act passed during their first term in office, Stephen Harper's Conservatives mandated a Parliamentary Budget Officer to provide independent analysis of Canada's finances and economic trends, and of the government's estimates. It would be even more to their credit if the Conservatives took heed of Kevin Page's concerns about the Jan. 27 budget, and made a serious effort to address them.
Not by Obama alone
Senator John McCain's unambiguous opposition to the Buy American clause in the U.S. stimulus measures should impress upon Canadians the need to cultivate regard in Congress both for Canadian exports and for free-trade agreements and principles. There is still some hope on Capitol Hill.
