History
Schenectady County Community College was established by the Schenectady County Board
of Representatives on January 26, 1967. The Van Curler Hotel was purchased by the County
and designated as the site for the College. After extensive renovations, classes began in
September 1969. The building was subsequently renamed Elston Hall in honor of Charles W.
Elston, an original member of the Board of Trustees who served as chairperson for eight
years. Elston Hall houses classrooms, science and culinary laboratories, the Casola
Dining Room, meeting rooms and offices.
New construction to enlarge the campus was completed in 1978. A multi-purpose
building houses the Begley Library, including a media center and a TV studio with
satellite viewing capabilities. Connected to the library is a music wing, designed
to meet the specific needs of students in nationally accredited music programs, and
the Carl B. Taylor Community Auditorium. In 1982, the Tempo Building was constructed
providing over 8,000 square feet of space for four classrooms, the Office of
Continuing Education, business and industry training and other special programs.
The campus was further enhanced in 1987 when the Center for Science and
Technology opened. This unique facility houses the College’s physics and
chemistry laboratories as well as specialized laboratory facilities for electrical
technology and computer science.
A campus development project was completed in 1992 that added a new student center
including a cafeteria, college store, student lounge and recreational space,
biology and geology laboratories and fifteen classrooms. The South Wing addition
added four new culinary arts laboratories, an expanded restaurant facility, and a
child care center. An enclosed pedestrian bridge connecting Elston Hall with the
Center for Science and Technology was also added.
The College has increased the number of electronic classrooms with Internet
access, multimedia teaching stations and student access to computers. Additionally,
a new state-of-the-art instructional technology/ video conferencing center has been
developed in the Begley Library. A five-year, $11 million dollar Master Plan has
brought further enhancements to the campus. The Gateway Building, opened in March
2000, houses early childhood development classes, labs, and a child care center.
The Stockade Building, a new three-story academic facility, opened in fall 2001.
This building includes six computer classrooms, nine general classrooms, two lecture
halls, conference rooms and offices for the Continuing Education Division and Capital
District World Trade Center. There is an enclosed walkway linking Elston Hall and the
Begley Building with the Stockade Building. The College’s new quad area is a focal
point for students, faculty and staff to socialize. Further campus enhancements to
Elston Hall are also planned.
A new five year Master Plan will be implemented which may include an Elston Hall
Culinary Wing expansion, Begley Building Music/Drama Wing expansion campus expansion
across Washington Avenue and student housing.
