Fatal Frame

Fatal Frame All over the world, there are paranormal investigators who believe that, in the right circumstances, you can capture ghosts on film for the world to see. It doesn't seem to matter to them that what they call ghosts look more like thumb smudges, dust motes and developing errors to the more sane members of society - they fully believe that those ectoplasmic manifestations on their Kodak film are pure proof of the world beyond. Don't tell that to Miku Hansaki, the protagonist of the 2001 PlayStation 2 game Fatal Frame. When she travels to the abandoned Himuro Mansion on a dark night in 1986 to follow the trail of her missing brother, she finds that her trusty camera is the only thing standing between her and utter terror. Using the camera, Miku can seal the energies of ghosts in photographs, exorcising them from this plane as she delves further and further into the mansion. With an atmosphere that draws heavily from Japanese folklore and mythology, Fatal Frame teases out its story in tantalizing drops, but each of the game's chapters builds upon what has gone before in a way that makes the series easily the best-written survival horror games ever. In a nutshell, the mansion contains a portal called the "demon's mouth" that looses all manner of darkside crap onto the Earth. In an occult ritual, a young woman named Kirie was bound with rope and sacrificed to seal the portal, but because she was consumed with anger, the sealing failed, and everybody in the mansion was killed. What makes Fatal Frame so awesome is the way the ghost enemies tie into the storyline - when you're first attacked by the broken-necked ghost women with their heads dangling limply over their backs, it's scary - but then when you find out exactly how their necks got broken, it's incredibly scary.
