John Tuzo Wilson, geophysicist, born Ottawa, Ontario, October 24, 1908; died April 15, 1993. Ph.D., 1936, Princeton Univ. Spent most of career at Department of Geophysics, Univ. of Toronto. Joined AGU 1945; elected Fellow 1962. Received Walter H. Bucher Medal, 1968; Maurice Ewing Medal, 1980. President. International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics. AGU's first non-U.S. president.

James Alfred Van Allen, physicist, born Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, September 7, 1914. Ph.D., 1939, Univ. of Iowa. Applied Physics Laboratory, Johns Hopkins Univ., 1946-1950. Head of Department of Geophysics, Univ. of Iowa from 1951. Joined AGU 1948; elected Fellow 1963; President, Section of Planetary Science, 1964-1968; President, Section of Solar-Planetary Relationships, 1976-1978. Charles Lum Drake, geophysicist, born Ridgewood, N.J., July 1, 1924; died July 8, 1997. Ph.D., 1958, Columbia Univ. Appointed to President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, 1990.
