The scoop on Griffey

I've been working the phones the past little while and can now tell you that the Atlanta Braves did indeed make a late push for Ken Griffey Jr. and are serious about taking him away from the Seattle... Read entry

THIS IS SO PAINFUL! If Griffey doesn't come back to Seattle it will be the biggest let down -- this is a dream come true. We were so excited and then the rug has been pulled out from under us. Griffey would be crazy if he didn't come to Seattle -- he is so loved here -- what would Atlanta give him? Here in Seattle he would be "the man" in Atlanta he is just one of the men. Griffey and Seattle don't do this to your fans...make our dream come true!!!!

Chipper Jones is quoted today as saying he has spoken with Griffey several times in the past week and it looks pretty good that he will sign with the Braves.

Thanks for your take on this story, Geoff. Do you honestly believe that Junior will sign w/ Braves if they offer him $2.75 million; and the M's offer him only $2 million? I seriously doubt this is truly about the $$$$. If you or I knew WHO Griffey is talking to [say, for example, Jay Buhner]; and what he wants to do, then you would have the answer. Anyway, we should know more this week.....

I don't know where fans get the idea that Griffey is/was a leader. Even he said he wasn't. He may have been a goof off in the clubhouse without being intimidated by other players, but he is no leader.

Leaders are guys that do the right thing and insist that other people do the right thing, e.g. Jay Buhner, Jose Guillen, Lou Pinella, Carlton Fisk, etc. Don't look for Jr to be a leader - he isn't one, and never claimed to be one.

I don't think Baker is being arrogant or a "know it all. I just don't think anyone who wasn't here from '89 to '99 can know. They just can't. Gary Carter was big in Montreal - and we weren't there so we can't pretend to know how big. But baseball was second fiddle to hockey in Montreal and by the time Carter returned the fanbase in Montreal was tiny. And Tony Fernandez??? Very good player. But not a HOFer and Toronto had several great players (George Bell, Barfield, Carter, Olerud, Alomar, Stieb) and a couple WS titles. The importance and attachment between the fans of Seattle and Junior (as unrequited as it apparently was) is just different. So whatever models Baker or others want to use to determine how much attendance would increase with Griffey? Irrelevant.

"Funny how A-Roid has imploded over the years and has never won a world series ring. "

Uh, since he left Seattle A-Rod is averaging .987 OPS. With Seattle he had averaged an .842 OPS per year.

I think that's kind of like the opposite of imploded.

The hinesight of how KGJr left was - when asked who the Mariners should try to "keep", KGJr said that is not up to me and was miffed that the FO saw A-Rod as being the keeper. After offering A-Fraud $96 million for 4 years and being told there was no hometown discount and being disrespected (to sign with TEXAS for $25.2 per year) we lost both HOF quality players. Funny how A-Roid has imploded over the years and has never won a world series ring.

Anyway get over it.

Do we need a power LH bat? Do we have a DH? Do we have veteran leadership on the club? Then it makes sense to sign KGJr to a 1 year deal with an option. Make no doubt about this - it would be a baseball business decision - sentimentality be damned.

Do not even think that Garret Anderson is an option. Think Wlad or Jeff. We are going young and cheaper. No reason to outbid ourselves or veer from the chosen course. If KGJr is in camp then and only then will I believe it. Everything else is just posturing for work - marketing. KGJr in a Mariner uniform would do our marketing efforts some good, but not to break the bank over.

"I love this. Griffey coming back to Seattle was another train wreck in the making. Sure, he does seem to consider family factors in his decision-making, but the guy has always been about the money."

I'm on record as saying that Griffey screwed the M's when he left. But he didn't leave for the money. He did want to be closer to his family.

I didn't doubt his intentions, I just questioned the way he went about getting himself to Cinci.

Maybe the M's could import some Stag beer from the midwest for the concession stands, and have the price reflect the DH's OBP......that'd be cheap enough.

from MarinerFan1984:

"Gonzo-
I have to respectfully[...]"

Just gave you a big thumbs up, M'sFan'84. Do you have any idea how rare it is in the draconian and saturnine world of gonzo blogging to see the words "respectfully" and "Gonzo" used in such close proximity?

Next thing I know there will be an Official Press Pass in my mail from Howie and Chuck themselves. Can't go into the alter-egotistical details, but that might pose a "Clark Kent" sort of problem.

GB

P.S. Still tracking down leads to find Lois WWG Lane, in case this Griffey deal disintegrates. Hot seat time.

If the new Mariners slogan is "A new day. A new way"
shouldn't they reduce the sky high ridiculous prices on concessions?

I mean I love Safeco Field and all, but with the economy being what it is, do the M's really think that us blue collar folks will throw down 7 bucks for a beer?? That's a whole six pack outside the Safe!

If they want fans to come to the out to the games to watch this AAAA team play in 09' they might want to lower prices...

tjh23- Refer to my post below-

Explain to me how Griffey has always been "all about the money" when he took a discount to play closer to home in Seattle?

Quite frankly, I wish he were all about the money as it would make this whole situation a heck of a lot less complicated.

I love this. Griffey coming back to Seattle was another train wreck in the making. Sure, he does seem to consider family factors in his decision-making, but the guy has always been about the money. He really doesn't even seem to be likeable. Yet, for some reason, delusional Seattle fans swoon over him and continue to feed the beast that is his enlarged ego. The guy decided to leave Seattle for the money a decade ago - he made his decision, let him go.

We would have been so much better off with Abreu. At least Garrett Anderson would be a consolation prize. Griffey will merely be a distraction in Seattle's rebuilding efforts.

Griffey will play on contender if he sign with the braves !! I am Washington resident, the mariners will not be playing 500 ball in the next 10 years.he should not waste His time with the mariners. He is healthy now he should be good for another 3 year.

Gonzo-

I have to respectfully disagree with you-

If 1 or 2 million is enough to take Griffey away from his Family now (By playing in Atlanta), then why was 10-15 million (or more) not enough to convince Griffey to sign 10 years ago? Remember the Mariners offered him more cash then what he received from the Reds. He simply wanted to be closer to his family on the east coast.

While I desperately want to see him in a M's Uniform again, I think his decision comes down to one simple thing- Family. Griffey has never been entirely about the money, simply going to the highest bidder like A-rod. I think this is part of the reason why he is still loved in Seattle whereas Arod is enemy #1.

Wait for 3 more weeks to see what happens in ST. If it is apparent that Bal or Morris or whoever cannot do the job then consider adding a vet. They don't need ST anyway.
