The magnificent Breakers was the most ambitious and luxurious resort hotel in the area, and enjoyed great popular success. It was owned from 1938-1947 by Conrad Hilton, who converted the penthouse into the Skyroom. After a period of decline, The Breakers became a residential facility for seniors in 1990. The architectural style is Spanish Renaissance with lavish decoration surrounding the entryway and inside the lobby. Many sea motifs are used, such as mermaids, Spanish galleons, Neptune, crabs, and so on. Walker and Eisen were prominent and accomplished Los Angeles architects, who designed numerous landmarks. |
