About the Museum
The Silk Mill Museum is on the site of the world's oldest factories, the Silk Mills built by George Sorocold in 1702 and 1717. The foundations and parts of the tower from the 1717 mill are still visible.
The displays tell the story of the industrial heritage and achievement of Derby and its people. There is a special emphasis on the development of Rolls-Royce aero engines and the railway industry. Other displays cover local industries such as mining, pottery and foundry work. The Power Gallery covers the story of motive power in industry with hands-on exhibits.
There is an area devoted to regularly-changing temporary exhibitions, and a programme of educational activities.
Parking
Visitors may use the Assembly Rooms car park. There is limited street parking on Full Street.
Facilities for disabled visitors
The museum is fully accessible to wheelchair users. Baby changing facilities and toilets for all visitors are on the first floor.
Group visits
If you wish to visit the museum as an organised group, just let us know beforehand when you are coming and what you want to see. This helps us to ensure that your visit does not clash with other groups. We now have guided tours on Thursday or Friday mornings.
Education service
Teachers can lead their own visits, or book one of the sessions led by one of the museum's staff. We strongly recommend a preliminary visit. The Education team are always willing to meet teachers on site to discuss their specific requirements. We welcome schools to the museum, but all school visits must be booked beforehand. Please telephone 01332 641901 to make a school booking.
