David Archuleta's 'Crush' is surprisingly good!

Aug 4, 2008, 10:27 AM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: 'American Idol', Music

I was not a huge fan of David Archuleta during his tenure on American Idol's seventh season. Sure, as Randy Jackson reminded us (over and over and over), the kid could "sing the phone book," but frankly, a weekly rundown of surnames and seven-digit numbers would've been more interesting (and more contemporary) than the array of drippy, "big issues" ballads the Utah teenager favored on his way to a runner-up finish.

With that in mind, though, I'm glad none of my PopWatch colleagues weighed in on David's first post-Idol single, "Crush," which premiered on Elvis Duran's Z100 morning show Friday morning (while I was enjoying a day off at the Jersey shore), because much to my surprise, it's actually pretty good. I was worried the folks at 19 might saddle David with the kind of bland, soul-crushing production that sent former Idol runners-up like Bo Bice and Diana DeGarmo directly to the bargain bin (without passing go, or collecting a followup major-label release), but "Crush" sounds hip and contemporary. The chorus alone is prettier than a window box of pink petunias, with an epic sweep that evokes waves crashing, thunder rolling, and herds of horses galloping through lush fields -- exactly what a song about the early pangs of teenage romance should do. The lyrics, like a lot of today's top 40 fare, won't win a Pulitzer for poetry, but they won't make you wince, either. (Side note: On my first few listens to "Crush," I was wrongly convinced the last line of the chorus -- "Do you ever think/When you're all alone/All that we could be/Where this thing could go" -- was "Where this sneaker go.") And David adroitly walks the line between giving his core fans their fill of vocal runs while showing enough restraint that he won't automatically alienate non-Idol-loving listeners.  In other words, I'm convinced "Crush" (embedded below) is good news for David (a charming kid, as you can see by clicking here and here for the interview I did with him a couple months back), for his fans, and for the general health of the Idol franchise. What say you, PopWatchers?

Ayden Wed, Feb 4, 2009 at 06:00 PM EST

People stop hating! Both are great singers. David Archuleta and David Cook are both awesome! I love both of them and their songs lolz~ I didn't know that David Archuleta had haters though... O.O Holy cow lolz~

Preston Wed, Jan 28, 2009 at 01:07 PM EST

Heck,I like overproduced songs (sorry to the posters who said it was)! And this song fits nicely for David Archuleta. Keep in mind that he's recording with music professionals now, not the live band from Idol.

Preston Wed, Jan 28, 2009 at 01:04 PM EST

I thought he said Where this sneaker go? too on the last line before the final 59 seconds of the song! Maybe he was so wrapped up in the rhythm when he was recording the song.

Archie's Little Punk Mon, Jan 19, 2009 at 03:50 PM EST

Wow, Archie! You're soo good!
Well, haters, eat my words when I say this: This is near-flawless (excluding his slight breathing problem: It's called vocal paralysis, people. besides, he's getting better.) piece of awesomeness, especially in comparison to all the sucky pop crap we hear on the radio these days. And yes, I've heard Crush ALOTALOTALOT on the radio. so there.
Inspiring lyrics, angelic vocals, and catchy tunes are uncommon in songs these days. Crush delivers the package perfectly. Oh, and bashers, please leave us alone and go listen to your precious emo music. People like you are the last thing we need. :(
And by the way, I'm fifteen. haha.
Peace out.

meh. tried listening to the song, got about halfway through it and turned it off. it's not an awful song, god knows AI has produced worse than this, but it really isn't my cup of tea (and I hate the constant sounds of him taking a breath! learn to breathe, boy!)

Alexis Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 07:45 AM EST

Paula Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 07:36 PM EST

Thank you Mr Slezak for your positive critique of Crush. Not something everyone would admit too after the crushing he took during the AI season.
I agree it is a great song, to me it "has a little "meat" to it, something alot of pop songs are missing. And we agree on another things, he is a charming young man.

Lorraine Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 03:54 PM EST

Awesome video David! He's an amazing talent. Can't wait for his album on Nov 11th.

Kim Mon, Oct 6, 2008 at 04:46 PM EST

I love David Archuleta. I think he is the most talented Idol contestant ever. I can hardly wait until his CD comes out.

Joey Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 12:28 PM EST

Wow this song is yet another carbon copy of those pop rock influenced songs with backed with a semi-R&B; beat (i.e. Beyonce's "Irreplaceable", Chris Brown "With You", and most recently last years American Idol winner Jordin Sparks "Tattoo".. the only difference is Stargate produced all of those songs.. But I have to say said I really do enjoy listening to the over-dramatic production on David's song "Crush" (particularly the guitar riffs and the repetitive chorus) it is a cute teen pop rock song for someone his age much like Jesse McCartney was doing before he grew up and transformed into Justin Timberlake with a new R&B; sound.. I could see this song and video being played at American Eagle..

Kristyn Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 12:01 PM EST

This song is so mediocre. It seems like he got a song the Jonas Bros turned down. No wonder I never hear it on the radio

Virginia Banker Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 07:06 AM EST

You guys just don't get it. The american Idol was David James Archuleta. Were these votes real or fixed? But thats ok because David can do his own thing. Nov.11 every one will get David and he will make them understand who he is. Don't ever under estimate David's world wide fans.

virginia Sat, Sep 20, 2008 at 05:19 PM EST

From the very first day of AL. David took my heart and soul. If I had one vote for all the singers in world it would have to go to David Archuleta.Ask Paula said if we could only find an other David Archuleta.

Mic Sat, Sep 20, 2008 at 02:19 PM EST

This reminds me of a JoJo song.

Triston Hill Sat, Sep 20, 2008 at 12:06 PM EST

David Archuleda I am your biggest fan

virginia Sat, Sep 20, 2008 at 09:02 AM EST

Go David the best video out CRUSH. David you made us fans proud. CRUSH is so awesome just like you.

Love both Davids Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 04:41 PM EST

This song is fantastic. I can't tell you how many times it's been stuck in my head since I first heard it. I'll have to admit, I'm a little bit more of a David Cook fan, but I'm still really happy to see David Archuleta's song doing so well. I'm proud of him. He's got so much talent for a kid only a little older than me! Can't wait til November so I can buy both Davids albums!

lyrix Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 03:19 AM EST

Emsee- Now that was funny. And I promise, I won't tell anyone if you secretly have that "freakin awesome song playing on your ipod.

I'm so sick of people saying he was boring on the show, people can't deny he has amazing talent. I love the song Crush, I was so excited when it was premiering on the radio, I can't wait to buy his CD. November 11 everyone!!

visitor Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 01:00 PM EST

Sarah , How could you hate Archie and be a Cook fan , so you’re not truly a Cook fan !!
BTW this song is amazing and so Archie !

yumi Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 07:29 AM EST

amazing.....
your "crush" make me crazyyyyyyyy

To Emsee Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 05:32 PM EST

Emsee, what could possibly make you hate David? The fact that he's always smiling? The fact that he has morals and family values? The fact that he treats others with the utmost respect? The fact that when people tell him that he should've won Idol, he says "Oh no...no, Cook is the best." Wow, I'd hate to see what kind of person you are. You must be a hell of a ray of sunshine.

Tammy Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 11:27 PM EST

Michael, glad you liked Crush. David A. from the very beginning has always been charming and talented as has David C. It is nice for you to acknowledge his charm. But really, any one that watches your interview with him does not need for you to state the obvious.

archangel48 Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 10:47 PM EST

(meant sara with an "H")

archangel48 Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 10:44 PM EST

WOW, Sara...try looking at "the man-in-the-mirror". Possibly you have some issues needing deep thought into your anger. Sorry for you.

CRUSH_IS_A_SMASH Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 05:42 PM EST

MARCO - YOU ROCK!!!! How can anyone with a set of functioning ears deny this young man's talent? How could anyone who watched him objectively on AI not have seen the... yes I'm saying it for the record... the GREATNESS that was being revealed week after week. Shame on you America, you crowned the wrong Idol - but it's all right now. His success is the sweetest validation for the millions who "got it"....

imrose Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 04:17 PM EST

All I want in this world is for David Archuleta to keep singing with that exquisite voice of his. I believe that Mr. Sleaze, sorry Sleazak, was looking only as far as his nose when he was watching David A. perform. He never imagined (even though I don't see how you could overlook David's mega voice) David's voice singing anything else. There were clues all over his performances of what he is capable of. I just can't believe that someone in his position would not have seen it. And if he didn't that brings into question Mr. "S"'s ability to be critiquing these Idol performances or anybody else's for that matter. Sorry, but I too have to call it like it is.

Lindy Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 03:17 PM EST

I think "Crush" was just right for David's debut single. I just love his voice -- and his smile. Whenever I see his smiling face, he just makes me happier and lifts my spirits. What a kid -- or I guess I should say young man!! I just know great things are going to happen for David in the future since sooooo many of us enjoy his music.

Emsee Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 02:00 PM EST

Sarah nailed it for me. I hate this kid so much, and he just had to go out and make a freakin awesome song! Another reason for me to hate him! (I have strange logic, I know, just don't bother!)

mykee Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 06:39 AM EST

this song is really great!!! it reflects my feelings for my crush..

Marco Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 10:09 PM EST

What an amazing kid. This really is a very sweet, melodic and addicting song...an absolute winner! As a musician, I appreciate the soul that David has puts into the song and how difficult it is to produce a hit like this.

I've seen a little criticism out there that is so diametrically opposed to the joy I feel when I hear this song, that it really taught me a lesson. You can be melodic, soulful, immersive, on pitch, and just superbly adept with vocal artistry and there will still be people who actually hate what you sound like? It was a shock to hear David produce such a beautiful, unforgettable song on his very first try. But it was equally shocking to hear the hatred for this awesome hit? It's a strange world and people are as perplexing as the Universe.

Hey David: don’t listen to all of the evil noise out there. It’s just a bunch of confused, dysfunctional, demented people that don’t have clue about laboring in a studio to get a track perfect. You got it! You feel it

Tricia541 Sun, Aug 24, 2008 at 06:53 PM EST

I love the song! And props to you for giving this kid a fair shot. Nice to know someone out there can gave an objective opinion. Peace.

I enjoy when I hear David Archuleta voice. He will crush the world music in year 2009 for sure

bj Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 03:31 PM EST

This is a good start for David Archuleta. He needs to show he has commercial viability, and this song will do the trick.

audry Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 07:49 AM EST

David caught my attention from the beginning of AI. He is young ,likable,
good looking and has a great voice. we
began to know him as time went on. a young gifted young man with a pure voice, great talent and an enigmatic
personality. these qualities gained
him widerange of fans around the world. He gave joy, hope inspiration to many already.truly a remarkable kid. a rare find in our cynical society.

Post-idol songs such as Crush has
unleash something that David is capable of..I am still awed by him
with everything he does. the tour and
working on his records in between proves him as a multitasking machine.
The amazing thing is he is only 17 and
shows that music is his life. I pray
that God will continue to bless him
and keep him safe on his venture to
the world of music.

Sara Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 09:30 PM EST

His first song is so AWESOME!!! I can't wait any longer for his album to come out! I bet his other songs are just as great.

Aaron Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 04:10 PM EST

He should have won... but at least he has his own album coming out! This song is great, so much emotion.

kenn Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 02:43 AM EST

DOWNLOAD BEFORE SATURDAY NIGHT AND LET'S MAKE THIS SONG DEBUT AT #1 ON HOT 100!!!!!!!!

whoopseedaisy Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 04:19 PM EST

He sounds like an angel
Amazing, amazing, amazing

Suzanne Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 03:44 PM EST

This review was written weeks ago and people are still pulling it up and posting. Incredible. People are so hooked on David. (Me too--When is he going to perform this song live sometime?)

go Archie Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 12:52 PM EST

I love Crush, it's my favorite song. Archie has a great voice, I'm so happy for you Archie! I cant wait to buy your new album!

CANADIAN_DAFan Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 11:14 AM EST

An amazing song by an amazing young man. The song shows an ability to sing an upbeat song that can compete with anyone out there. David has proven he can make it in the music business. His talent is enormous, and I can't wait for the album.

whoopseedaisy Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 01:09 AM EST

He sounds like he has a cold.

Boring, boring, boring.

Ballzack Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 12:41 AM EST

This song will be huge. While he may be a little annoying with aww shucks routine, the kid is authentic and a great mofkn singer. NO ONE can take that away from him. And sure he's a ridiculous sap, but this cynical effdup little earth needs some true believers like him to actually tone down all the edge we are so used to. Good for him and his angelic voice.

Let me also add that this will be the first AI single in awhile that radio will embrace. Sure, everyone and their Grandma will buy it, duhhhh, but this will have a life outside the bubble. Strong.

Let's not crapp on the other Davie, kids. That is silly. The guy has a great voice, superior musical talent and EXCELLENT star quality. He may be outta the Kelly/Clay/Carrie box, but he'll make some good sounds, I promise. No worries, both your beloved Davids will have a long career.

Plus you won't even care like 2 years from now so why are you even worried? It's not like we are debating about John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

elaine Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 11:52 PM EST

david archuleta's single is very very he only prove to us that he has the God given talent...we wish you luck david...we love you .. goodluck to crush and to your album...love it!

kp Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 06:34 PM EST

the song is okay. but i'm a die hard
david cook fan!

trublu82 Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 05:43 PM EST

The facts: David Cook won American Idol. America voted. He won. It's over. His fans got their wish. They should be overjoyed, and secure in their knowledge that "America got it right"...But why do I sense an undercurrent of defensiveness and... dare I speak it's name.....FEAR.... emanating from the DC crowd, via the tone in many comments here and elsewhere in the media? Is it buyer's remorse? Is there a little devil riding your shoulder, whispering in your ear that maybe, just maybe you backed the wrong contestant? Time will tell.

go Archie Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 11:03 AM EST

Archie and Crush are number 1 on itunes
congratulations Archie!!

Kay Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 10:27 PM EST

I am in my early 50s and never watched AI until I saw a young kid in audition. Something about him I had to watch the show. I even started voting. Frankly, I thought those people who voting for reality shows don't have life until David Archuleta hooked me into ( I meant in a good way). His voice is nothing like I have ever heard and not to mention how cute he is and has smile to die for. I am so glad I am not a teen. If I am, I am in trouble :). BTW, Crush is very good. I love it!! I am so happy for him. In a way, send a message to his critics during the AI competion. I think some people voted for DC b/c he/she doesn't want DA to win for whatever reason. Go Archie!!

KB Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 10:06 PM EST

I love Crush and David Archuleta. David is one of the most humble, thoughtful, caring people you could ever meet. It kinda irks me that people have to make such comments of disliking him for no reason.

Christine Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 08:44 PM EST

Seriously, is it a rule that if you like one David, you have to hate the other? I am a fan of both!

Sarah--Why do you hate David with a burning passion? Do you hate that he smiles all the time and tries to please his fans every time? Or is it maybe because he is able to look up to others, like David cook, and acknowledge how he was the right choice to win? Or perhaps it is because he posesses some incredible qualities about him that even adults wish they had? Wow...David is full of BAD! -rolls eyes- And for those who tear down David Cook...is it because he supports cancer and charity? Or maybe because he treats his fellow idols like his siblings and respects them at all costs? SERIOUSLY--even if you don't like their musical genres, you must admit that these two are stellar human beings. To hate them as a person is like committing a sin, no joke!

Lindy Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 04:14 PM EST

I think David's "Crush" is just the right song for him for his first. Everyone can relate to "Crush" and it's a catchy tune that gets in your head. I think "Crush" was just the perfect choice for him. I'm looking to buy the single since I don't download and I have my order in Amazon for his CD.

Rob Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 04:02 PM EST

anyone who says they hate Archie "with a burning passion" has some emotional problem that has nothing to do with David A.. He probably triggers something in that person that they don't want or care to look at. If you don't like the song, fine. But when you start attacking David as a person you reveal more about yourself than you realize. Get therapy.

JuliaK Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 02:56 PM EST

I am at my 40s, and this is the first time I download something from itunes. It is David's "Crush".
I love this song, as well as this young man. Proud to be his fan, an old fan.

joanie Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 01:24 PM EST

I agree with chasee. Have you noticed that the david cook fans never speak in positive terms about dc? All they seem capable of is spewing hate toward David Archuleta. Not a very good sign for dc, if you ask me.
Let every keystroke, every click of the mouse and every comment be a positive one FOR David Archuleta! I am so proud of DA's accomplishment of having "Crush" make it to #1 on itunes on it's first day of release. Go buy a copy, then you'll be hooked on David Archuleta forever!

chasee Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 12:42 PM EST

Sarah how can you have so much hate for someone you don't even know? You are just showing how immature you are and lack of knowledge and respect for all artists that dare to be different than a loud rocker (and I do like David Cook). The competition is over, so your "hatefull" comments do not count. Let me ask you this do you LOVE EVERY Artist that ever sang a song. Most of Archuleta's fans (young and older) don't need your approval. He made it to No. 1 on Itunes on his first day of release. HATE is such a bad word really and folks enough with the "over analysis" of this young man's single. If you have an opportunity to see him live, you will get to appreciate how more incredible he is than you can ever imagine. But again, you seem to only have a ONE TRACK mind. Who cares?

Sarah Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 12:21 PM EST

ugh. i HATE to admit, but i actually like this song!! i HATE archie with a burning passion and i'm a HUGE cook fan!! he sucked on tour and cookie was AMAZING!!

Brandon Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 10:58 AM EST

It's number 2 on iTunes in Canada right now.

Nick Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 07:38 PM EST

It's very good. Even though I can't stand David Archuleta.

this songs awesome

Kateeee Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 03:34 PM EST

this song is so amazing. its such an unexpected turn for him and not a lot of artists can pull that off. congrats david, you deserve everyhing you get

GGDOORSFAN Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 02:53 PM EST

David has delivered an amazing first single to his fans, and the public. It is rhythmic, David's superior vocals soar and are identifiable throughout, has a catchy beat.. Hey-> I watched lotsa American Bandstand back in the day.
His older fans like me find themselves humming along unconsciously, and the verses transport the listener back to those bygone days of school girl and schoolboy CRUSHES... It has an appeal across a very broad spectrum of listeners, and should effectively silence the detractors and critics who didn't believe he had mainstream appeal. CRUSH is the catapult for David to continue his growth and evolution as an artist - I ANTICIPATE MANY MANY YEARS OF OUTSTANDING MUSIC FROM HIM. TAKE A BOW DAVID... YOU'VE ARRIVED.

Jan Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 01:10 PM EST

This kid sounds great singing anything - but the ay-aya-ay part of this song gets on my nerves and I have to it off. It sounds more boy-band than R&B; to me. I will wait patiently until he records more mature material and continue to listen to his AI songs that I'm so addicted to in the mean time. With that voice - he is going to be around a long long time- I can wait.

joanie Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 11:45 AM EST

Whoa.....just go to itunes and buy the single "CRUSH" today (08/12/08) and see what those of us who appreciate David Archuleta see. You will NOT be disappointed.

i don't know how anyone can say anything bad about david archuleta. he and david cook were the best this season.

Heather Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 07:33 PM EST

"Crush" is probably the second best debut single by an American Idol contestant, only behind "It's Not Over". I was afraid they'd Bo Bice/whatever the other kids were him too, but this song is infectious.

I have to say though, I was disappointed by it. Maybe I think he can do better.

christina Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 06:29 PM EST

Hey i love this song anyway and i really liked David throuout AI 7th season, but it was sorta same old same old every week. I really love the way he sings this song though! he is very cute and he has an amazing voice i am very glad he did this song!

DavidCDavidA Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 01:15 PM EST

I really like it even tho it's more for my tween than for me - which is also why I'm pleased! I love this kid! My family went to the tour, loved it, and we were VERY impressed with little David's vocals! Probably more so than anyone elses! We all favored Cook for the win and love him too, but I totally give props to this great young singer!

Meggs Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 11:27 AM EST

Buy the CD.I WISH I COULD MEET YOU!

Meggs Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 11:24 AM EST

It is awesome. I am so ready to by the CD. Think it is a great start out for him since American Idol.

Dan Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 10:40 AM EST

Excellent first-effort by David Archuleta, who, I think, will be a major star once the full CD is released in November.

AMPitUp Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 08:42 AM EST

i can honestly say that i am impressed with how well archuleta has transtitioned from the world of american idol to the modern-day music industry world. this single is a good step for him and a reputable debut single. congratulations to him.

Pete Sun, Aug 10, 2008 at 02:41 PM EST

Did you see the Aug 15 edition of EW? EW puts an arrow for this single pages after the bullseye. Seems the editors of the print version don't read EW.com's Popwatch. Weird.

_Anne Sun, Aug 10, 2008 at 12:29 PM EST

Palm to Heart

To "The New Johnny Bravo", The suit however, doesn't fit David James Archuleta. It's flashy and overbearing and not at all what david is all about. David has a spirit of compassion that very few can match. Even when he did "Star Search" David had compassion for the contestant that left before him. There is nothing fake about David. And he just might be a cure for cancer, who knows. Medical science seems to know so little about curing it. Perhaps a does of MUsic from David each day would hlep them feel better. He certainly is a cure for other maladies. David is just a 17 year old young man trying to make a difference in the world. This is his mission, and it is most noble. As for wanting to be at the top of the charts, what is wrong with that. David isn't God, he is a mere human being. Being at the top of anything means you have a certain prestige and the ability to do more. David has dreams too you know. He is a kid. Not a 30 year old man, a 17 yr. old kid.

To To-Archie fan Sun, Aug 10, 2008 at 12:11 PM EST

Maybe you and TH fans should be more supportive to his carreer, as we do for our favorite AI of all times, Chris Daughtry!

To-ArchieFan Sun, Aug 10, 2008 at 11:10 AM EST

Never insult Taylor Hicks. He was the American Idol and the most deserving contestant of Season 5 and you cannot change that. If you and the others wanted to change that, then you and your lazy friends should have voted for your favorite idol.

rockyljp Sun, Aug 10, 2008 at 09:52 AM EST

Agree with you and not the least surprised by how good Crush is. This kid can sing anything - such mature and stirring musicality, phrasing, soul and brilliant vocals.

Glad you've now opened your eyes, ears and mind to the extraordinary talent of David Archuleta. AI stifled DA, deliberately keeping him in the ballad box and keeping his fans in the tween/grannie box. Both are so far from the truth. David had me at "Waiting on the World" and my admiration just continues to grow.

Despite what DA critics say, this kid is the real deal. He is not a pop idol flavor-of-the-month, but a serious artist who, I believe, will change the music industry for the better. If he makes the right choices and doesn't let the record execs turn him into cheese-wiz, he will become a music legend for generations to come.

Bravo, David....use your gift wisely and thanks for taking our breath away!

pastel Sun, Aug 10, 2008 at 09:33 AM EST

Mr. Slezak, I could tell that your opinion about David Archuleta was changing part way through your interview with him last May. Right on the camera, you were having a few "ah-ha" moments. It was like, "this kid is NOT what Idol portrayed him to be". Hello? We knew that! The kid understands music. He played by the Idol rules, not complaining when things didn't go his way. He didn't respond to the negative rumours. He is the opposite of immature (Cook called him 17 going on 30 in the Larry King interview). I'm glad that you have kept an open mind here because all David needs is a chance to break out of his Idol stereotype. This new CD will be a start.

Sevgi Sun, Aug 10, 2008 at 09:16 AM EST

Crush is the perfect 1st single for David. The lyrics speak to everyone of all ages and the music is so addictive. As usual, David's voice is soulful and beautiful. Well done!

NO, David doesn´t want to be touched by Miley!!! Lol Read all the comments by Christine and you´ll understand the whole story!

Archie fan Sun, Aug 10, 2008 at 12:07 AM EST

Matt S., I didn´t know that 'Shop around', 'We can work it out', 'Sweet Caroline', 'America', 'Stand by me' and 'With you' were ballads... Anyway, I think
David Archuleta did not win the title of "The American Idol Season 7", but there is no doubt that he BEAT THAT COMPETITION! He was declared winner by all the three judges. As said Randy, “the best singer of season 7 is right here!” and according to Simon Cowell, "...this show is about finding a star and tonight I think we have witnessed one of the great finals... but here is the good news, and in my opinion, David, you came out here to win and what we have witnessed, is a KNOCKOUT!" No one can ever say that all the three judges did not think the wrong guy won the title. So think 42 million American voters and many more around the world.
This shame already occurred when Taylor Hicks also won AI 5, and Americans had Chris Daughtry to pick! Who wins isn´t necessarily the best gifted!

I'm Selena Gomez... but on Demi Lovato's computer! :) Sat, Aug 9, 2008 at 09:49 PM EST

David Archuleta wants to be touched by Miley?

Christine Sat, Aug 9, 2008 at 03:56 PM EST

Anyways, that was from ABC News Radio if you want to look it up.

Just because David is working with some top-notch producers, does not, by any means, implicate that he wants or guarantees himself a #1 hit. David Cook is collaborating with a lot of stars on his album. Does that mean he is desiring for money and fame? NO! These two are producing music because they WANT to. If you were following their career paths and ambitions, like I am, then you would know that.

Christine Sat, Aug 9, 2008 at 03:53 PM EST

Continuing from the article:

# Archie admits that because he’s so pressed for time, he isn’t personally contributing a lot to his debut CD, but he hopes to correct that on his second album. He says, “Since there isn’t a lot of time put into this, and not really a lot of chance to have a lot of say in it, like trying to write with different people, hopefully, [this album will] be kind of like an introduction to what’s up ahead. If this album works, I’ll be able to work on more stuff in the future that has more input from me.”
# Archie thinks his new single “Crush” will prove some naysayers wrong. As he puts it, “A lot of people were wondering if I was able to pull off pop and I think this song…shows people that I can.” But he also doesn’t want the fact that the song is a pop song to pigeonhole him in any way, “Hopefully, it doesn’t limit me to anything, ’cause I’d love to show my variety, like Jordin did.”

Christine Sat, Aug 9, 2008 at 03:51 PM EST

Sorry, but was that a direct quote? No, it was not. It was what the article said. And in this article he elaborates on what he means by a "Miley-touch" and it doesn't have anything to do with her. He explains how his role model in music is Jordin Sparks and hopes to define himself in his album, NOT look for popularity. He never said he wanted to be popular like Mariah or Miley. If he wanted to have the most #1 hits in the world, he wouldn't be looking up to Jordin. No offense to Jordin, of course--I love her music.

David Archuleta elaborates on the reports that he wants a “Miley Touch” on his album. It seems his real role model is Jordin Sparks. He says, “She’s someone I’d love to follow in the footsteps of, because I love the way she balanced her record and it really showed different sides to her and hopefully, I’ll be able to do that. Jordin’s just such an amazing, emotional, mature vocalist, performer and artist.”

clayfan4archie Sat, Aug 9, 2008 at 12:57 PM EST

Crush is fantastic! It will zoom to #1 and go platinum knocking aside all competitors (including totally undeserving "winner" D. Cook). Archie is a better singer and hotter than any of the Jonas Brothers. CAN"T WAIT for the album - all America has a crush on David Archuleta!

Meg Sat, Aug 9, 2008 at 09:32 AM EST

I really love this song for Archie. His wonderful voice really makes it work. It makes you want to hear it again and again. I like that it's age appropriate for him. I also like that it is different from what's out there on the charts. I don't want him sounding like every other singer, either. I am SO glad that it's uptempo and current. My fear was that his songs would be like they were on Idol. Ultimately, his song choices were the problem. His character and beautiful voice were wonderful.

Oh, by the way, I'm a Cook fan through and through. I'll buy this on Itunes from Archie.

Achuleta is USING Miley and Mariah to LAND TO THE TOP OF THE CHARTS because landing at the top of the charts means money, fame and popularity!!!!!! So STOP negating what he said.

How suprising to hear you say anything at all complimentary about David Archuleta! You treated him just horribly during the season of AI. I have watched the inteviews you and he did after the Finale. His genuine humility and warmth, and honesty about his experience is a testament to the incredible person that he is. I have always wondered if he knew about your negativity towards everything he did on the show before doing the interviews. My guess is that he was at least clued in by those who care about him. His character is impeccable. The respect he showed to you during the course of that interview was hardly owed you, and because of who he is as a human being, you were treated with dignity you did not earn.
Evidently, he is stealing the show on the Tour. Have you watched any of his performances? His ability to connect with his audience is unprecedented, and his vocal and performance skills are a pure joy to witness. Many musical professionals are calling him the greatest singer of his generation, a prodigious talent, and a once in a lifetime singer. If you haven't seen it, I highly reccomend watching the July 14th performance of 'When You Say You Love Me'. He is singing to his hometown, and it is a truly inspiring and beautiful performance.
I certainly hope you are more fair to the next seasons contestants.

Christine Sat, Aug 9, 2008 at 12:14 AM EST

To ChartTopper--The LAST thing on David's mind is to have the popularity, money, and fame. He is simply pursuing music because it is his passion and he loves connecting to others in this way. He is always speaking of himself as if the worst will happen and has multiple backup plans if music does not work. He is NOT one to automatically think his album will become #1 or already see himself in 10 years being a Grammy winner. I read a story of him going around his neighborhood throughout the summer asking the elderly if he could help them out and was disappointed when he came back, saying that the families forced him to take some of their money. David separates himself so far from much of hollywood in the sense that he is pursuing his dream for OTHERS and not HIMSELF.

Matt S. Fri, Aug 8, 2008 at 03:46 PM EST

I was a David Cook supporter through and through and am very glad he won Idol. That said, i would've been far less opposed to David Archuleta if he had sung anything remotely in this vein on Idol. He got pigeonholed into a certain balladry and never broke his mold, and it grew stale on Idol. So i say congrats to him for showing some versatility, and this track probably bodes well for his career.

So the main purpose of Archuleta in life right now is to land at the top of the charts. That's a nice meaningful purpose in life.

That can be achieved quickly by one or two things:
1) Land a love affair with Miley Cyrus so the news media is all over the both of them 24/7.
2) Be a like a Jesse McCarthy/Leona Lewis and start putting out racey music videos that are bordering porn with clothes on. In other words, turn into a teen sex symbol."

No I TOTALLY disagree(No offence). David should not/would NEVER change who he is just to get popular. He is NOT going to date someone JUST because he wants the media all over him! He just needs to stay truthful to himself. A teenaged morman artist from Utah WON'T do "RACY VIDEOS" or date someone he doesn't like. If he likes Miley(Which I don't think sothen by all means he sould date her. But to not only USE her but to just fake who he is... is just not the RIGHT or David Archuleta thing to do!

WE LOVE TO HEAR IT IN SPANISH!!! IT'S GREAT!!!

telia Fri, Aug 8, 2008 at 01:01 AM EST

I thought Michael's interviews with David were excellent. He asked thoughtful questions and let David have time to talk rather than jumping in and finishing his thoughts for him.
I expected to love the single, but WOW I was excited to hear how really good it is. The words really describe how you feel when you do have a crush for the first time. It really is all consuming.

KB Fri, Aug 8, 2008 at 12:16 AM EST

I have been a fan since February. I was pleasantly surprised about Crush, the title gave me the impression that it was going to sound like something else. Anyways, I'm glad he's going in the younger direction to connect with his peers. I think he's already hooked the rest of us. Anything he sings gives the song more meaning and soul. Can't wait for the album to drop.

Inspired Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 11:13 PM EST

David has the most beautiful voice I have ever heard in my life and I was actually surprised when I first listened to "Crush" But I have to say that I LOVE it! Its catchy and you cant stop listening to it! It shows his fun and young side and Its perfect for a debut single! Davids a smart guy he knows what hes doing!

redjfromRP Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 10:41 PM EST

Crush.. honestly, the first time i heard this i do really appreciate the tune but not so much about the lyrics coz it seems that this song was just for teens though im just 21 years old. But i do love ARchuleta's voice. his pureness and the way he deliver the song makes it awesome and wonderful. it might be more beautiful to lessen the volume of the background vocals in the chorus. hehe.. ANyways, still a great song. hope to hear that song more in Philippine's radio stations.

ELIZABETH Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 07:02 PM EST

He sings so beautifully. It's absolutely unbelievable. I'm so proud of this kid. He's the perfect role model for young ones. It's about time we have someone like this in music. I even look up to him and I'm 22! I'd just sit with my mouth gaping after every Idol performance. This new single is toned down vocally but still managed to give me major chills. He hits every stinking note. Every one. I want one of my very own.

Beth Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 04:43 PM EST

I am surprised by this song. I think thought through the show that DA had a lovely voice, but not one that I would enjoy listening to on a daily basis. I think this is a good start for him, and a better start than I anticipated....

maria Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 04:25 PM EST

Time, time, time is on David's side...let's step back and give him the chance to enjoy watching his dreams come true. How many of us are so lucky? I wish him all the success and joy in the world.

Jules Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 04:16 PM EST

CRUSH is a great introduction of David to the pop music world. So many people got it so wrong about his appeal to a mainstream audience. This bodes well for the future. God willing, we will have many years to enjoy watching him come into his own, and get beter and better each time.

brew Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 03:46 PM EST

I like this song. There are several versions floating around the net, and the one that sounds less "produced" is the better version. This kid has super huge potential, I hope his record company leads him in the right direction.

Rob Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 02:37 PM EST

I'm mostly a rock fan and I was shocked by how much "Crush" rocks! Sure there's the r&b; element but then the killer chorus kicks in and I can't sit still. I always thought Archie had a great voice but only showed one side of himself on Idol. For a first single(and an Idol single at that)Arch did a great job.

Alex Gómez Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 09:53 AM EST

Crush is nice, catchy and above all CLEAN! In an era where sex, drugs and nonsense reign I really appreciate the clean lyrics of this song and David's sincere rendition. I wasn't expecting any less from David. At age 17, he's already a great singer. I can see him having a huge and long career. I look forward to buying his upcoming album.

THE NEW JOHNNY BRAVO Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 09:25 AM EST

Archuletta fits the suit. The kid and especially his father give me the creeps. The song, meh. I don't understand the hysteria on this site for and against. The kid is not curing cancer.

denver Philippines Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 11:49 PM EST

....i was surprised by this song. it has guitar riffs in it. i thought it made him look more mature than his age. and im guessing that was the producer's choice. but i have to say, it turned out just ok.
.......i was expecting his first single to be more r&b; but like other people here, this would do for now.
.......if he's going to release a ballad, he should do something like "crazy" by gnarls barkley. it was the 2nd time i was wowed when he performed that some weeks ago. the lyrics, the melody and the emotion he breathed into the song made me think he could be a serious artist someday.
.....i dont like some lyrics of this song especially when he's repeating crush again and again and proceeds to do the "yeah oh yeah oh yeah", makes me cringe though, but the melody is so good it almost covered up the imperfection.
.....my prediction is, this would make it into the top 40 but not top 10. his producers would have to do better than this.

I agree that it sounds over produced. I love Archie's beautiful voice and I don't think it needs any additions. He's a wonderful person and if he picks the right songs he will do fabulously. I will buy his cds and he should put out a holiday cd. That would be awsome! I saw him yesterday at Nassau Coliseum and he came out after the show and was so nice to everyone!

I completely agree with Mark in NYC. The song is pretty good, but why oh why is it sooo overproduced? David is known for his pure voice. The best thing you could do to his voice is absolutely NOTHING. I want to hear him, not some mixing board.

I can't get this darn song out of my head, which is surprisingly okay with me. I was ready to kick Archie to the curb by the end of his ballad-heavy run on AI (I agreed with Slezak 100% of the way and got sick of him at about the same time), but this is just too darn uplifting and catchy to dislike.

And "prettier than a window box of pink petunias" made me laugh out loud. That made my day.

I agree, Michael! It's surprisingly good. I voted for DC but always liked DA also. I'm glad he'll have a hit with this. Good job, David A!!

jm (8/5 @6:31 p.m.): David visted a new ear, nose, and throat doctor in L.A. during his Idol run, and was surprised to learn that his paralyzed vocal chord is still paralyzed. This information was divulged on Ryan Seacrest's radio program the morning after the finale of American Idol. Also, Idol vocal coach Debra Byrd has stated that she has literally looked down David's throat while he sings, and that only one chord vibrates.

Well, I loved to hear this 17 year old sing age-appropriate lyrics… it´s a really catchy pop song, it´s young but can be enjoyed by all tween, teens, young adults, adults and more mature audiences. Most of us can relate to that feeling. It´s a universal theme, with broad appeal, so the song will captivate so many people, from kids to grannies!
I´d would like him doing ballads showing his deep, soulful, soaring vocals, but those probably wouldn´t receive a huge amount of radio play. ‘Crush’ , however, certainly will, so it is the best for now.
This little kid is headed for stardom, as Paula said.
We love this kid here in Brazil!

Michael, such a reticent review, but appreciated nonetheless. I listened just this morning to the three interviews you did in May with David Archuleta. This young man has a depth of character and soul, and a talent that is hard to deny. It is to your credit that you were able to skillfully bring out the real David Archuleta. Please do more interviews with David as his star continues to rise. Trust me, if the aforementioned articles are any indication, you will BOTH benefit. And so will we.

I rooted for David A. to win but things sometimes work out the way they are supposed to. David is a sweet and talented young man and I love his voice and his attitude. I did not read M's comments, however I don't want to because David doesn't deserve bad press, talk to the hand. I wish David all the best for his new CD and the rest to come. I pray for him to stay in God's hands so that the media or his popularity won't ruin him. Go David but remember who gave you the great voice. You are a success.

How does your Crow taste? I hope you enjoy eating it. You were so consistently nasty and wrong about David Archuleta during AI that it was very hard to find any validity in anything you said or wrote. I did like your interview with David A, he showed way more class than you.

Diana Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 01:31 AM EST

Michael, I have never commented on your small and mean descriptions of David's personality and singing before because I thought it was not worth my time and energy.

I am glad this time you had kept an open mind and I think the comment is objective and fair.

I also take this opportunity to tell you that I like your interviews with David two months ago. Both of you were equally charming. The only difference was that David was relaxed and you looked uncomfortable and embarassed, was it because you suddenly realised that you had made a grave mistake and had done this kid a great injustice?

I love ballads, but I am open to pop, jazz, R&B; or soul. Hard rock is definitely out for me but I don't go around saying I hate it. So please do the same for David's music; I know you prefer rock from your comments in AI run.

BTW, I am not American, and I live in the Far East. We treat your artists (not only David) better than you do.

Luke Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 01:25 AM EST

Mr. Sleazak, Your reviews during the season were disturbing because they often included personal attacks intended to hurt David and people's opinion of him.(I'm fine with you having someone else as your favorite) I did appreciate this article because you did try to be fair in spite of the past. Likewise, David knew about your comments about him and tried to still be respectful and fair to you. He never tried to appear to be something other that what he is and did not duck the forgetting lyrics question that you pressed pretty hard. He is a nice, sweet, unassuming kid that people had a hard time believing was for real. But, to quote Cooke, "this kid is the real deal". He has a voice that is amazing and only comes along very rarely. He loves music and feels it with his heart and soul. He hopes others can feel what he does when he sings. He was so nervous and excited listening to his song for the first time and sharing that with him was very touching. Thanks for getting to know him.

Dr. Evil II Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 01:20 AM EST

Talk about Ballads. Didn't DC performed best and received great reviews from the AI judges when he sang "Hello," "Always Be My Baby," and "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face?" Aren't these ballad songs???

Timothy Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 12:10 AM EST

DAVID ARCHULETA IS THE BEST SINGER EVER!!!
AND HIS DEBUT SINGLE "CRUSH" IS SUPER AWESOME!!!!!

cincerity Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:53 PM EST

Michael, I was so hoping you would review David's new song. Thank you for hearing it with an open mind and for liking it! I know you were very critical of Archie when he was on AI but it sounds like he's finally winning you over. *yeah* It's one thing for his die hard fans to love the song and praise him for it, but it's really exciting when people like you that didn't really like him before are seeing how good this song is. I think "Crush" is the perfect first single for him. It's upbeat, catchy, youthful and very radio friendly. It's everything he needed to do to establish himself as a marketable, contemporary artist. I think it proves that David isn't a one trick pony. Yes, he can sing the ballads and the old classics beautifully as we all know, but this proves he can also sing current songs like this with ease as well. This kid has so much talent and charm, his potential is limitless.

Lorin Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:50 PM EST

i think i could def listen to him than watch him...sorta like clay...good song. he sounds older!

monica Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:24 PM EST

i don't watch american idol anymore after season 2, but that song wasn't too bad. i would't change the radio station.

Bronwyn Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:04 PM EST

Hmmm, I hated him on idol. But I have to admit that this is OK. Just OK though. David Cook is hot and wayy better!!

Joy Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 10:36 PM EST

ORKMOMMY..You haven't seen any of his AI Tour concert Videos have you? David's growing up fast and is becoming very comfortable on stage and with his audience.. more so with each performance. He works the crowd now..he flirts a little..he even dances when singing Stand By Me. You might want to give him another look.

momof5 Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 10:04 PM EST

Nice catchy tune. Yes it will be a hit and I have a feeling there will be many more to come with this young man.

Jana Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 09:11 PM EST

Like the song..Love this kid. Can't wait to see his rise to superstardom...

carly Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 09:01 PM EST

girliekew Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 08:09 PM EST

HOLD THE PICKLES Hold the sarcasm... Yes, Hillary Clinton and Chuck Schumer. And yes. You? Now can we talk about how amazing David Archuleta is for the soul?

archftw Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 08:01 PM EST

Thank you Michael for your positive review of Crush. I wonder if your post AI interview with David has altered/improved your opinion of the person you thought you knew. So humble, giving and gracious, and the way he pours his heart and soul into every song, not to mention his incredible voice - How can anyone not love this kid? I also think it says something about his “musical soul” that he has the ability to choose a catchy song that satisfies his fans (regardless of their age) and one that will recruit many new fans. It’s so hard to believe he’s only 17. Can’t wait to hear what he brings us in the future.

Kirah Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 07:25 PM EST

I love Crush. It is awesome and Archie's voice sounds GREAT!!!

Twilighter Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 06:54 PM EST

I LOVE THIS SONG !!! I'm going to be requesting it everywhere !

jm Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 06:31 PM EST

um.. perhaps some folks have misunderstood: it wouldn't be possible for Archie to sing w/ one paralyzed vocal cord, as they both vibrate together to produce a sound. He HAD vocal paralysis in the past, but has recovered. I believe at some point he referenced the fact that the breathy quality was due to this past incident. Still, he sounds very good - esp. given the fact that he's only 17.

Paul Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 06:01 PM EST

very, very true. i am ashamed when all i hear on the radio these days are rap songs that all sound the same and have no real point. however, that is what young america wants, apparently. i am a teenager, but i appreciate a lot of older music that wasn't exactly produced for MONEY.

Jeremy Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 05:34 PM EST

true, you're recognizing 'what works' in today's music industry, but why not put the "music" back into the "industry" and fix the problems that most of us are all too eager to comply with? did this kind of contemporary cooperation do any good for NKOTB?

Paul Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 05:28 PM EST

jeremy, i see what you are saying. however, music with a catchy beat is what gets airplay nowadays. i know that david is capable of so much more that showcases his voice, but he was shunned for that on idol. his label is pushing him to be more current and age-appropriate, otherwise he wouldn't get much exposure. once he gets his name out in the open, david can begin putting out a more elaborate genre of music that will really showcase his voice, i'm sure. he is so much more than a teenager with a voice.

jeremy Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 05:13 PM EST

it's unfortunate that once again, someone with a semi-decent voice suffers from the effects of an over-zealous production team. it happened with Jordin Sparks and we can see it again here with the glitzy vocal effects that smooth out any natural timbre with shimmering layers of 'harmony' so often found in today's popular music. although it never became into a powerhouse, David's voice sounds tinny and feeble and never actually blossoms into an ear-satisfying, fully-expressive voice. I'm still waiting for the day when singers are allowed to express themselves fully again, the day that Aimee Duffy and Ray Lamontagne aren't the exceptions to a digitally-enhanced world of robovoices. I'd personally love to hear a real, live singer for once, not an assortment of computer choirs and other various ear candies.

crush is addictive Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 04:12 PM EST

everytime I hear Crush I like it more. My favorite part is "going awayyyyyyyeahhhhh, welll all the song is amazing.
you rock David!

"HOLD THE PICKLES HOLD THE ARCHULETTUCE"
---> Too hip for the room, Oh condescending one?

HOLD THE PICKLES HOLD THE ARCHULETTUCE... Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 03:18 PM EST

You people are scary. But Archuleta and his father know one thing. The average lifespan for a teen "crush" is 18 months, so he's going to strike before he's yesterday's Leif Garret or whoever is or was the flavor of the moment. oh, and quick, girls...does anyone know who their US Senator is? Can you read anything besides these blogs? Help the homeless much? Didn't think so.

CyekiM Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 02:59 PM EST

I probably slammed Archie has hard or harder than anyone on these blogs during the season. However when he lost to David Cook and with the grace he showed, he won me over. With each interview he did I began to notice how grounded he is and what a good person he is. I think his first single "Crush" is very good, it has a great hook. We all have to remember David Archuleta is 17 he may have turned 18 by now, this song will sell very, very well with the younger targeted demographic.

Idletard.com Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 02:38 PM EST

Archuleta has some insane fans who think he's a divine entity of some sort.

Go to Idletard.com for more details.

CrushYAY Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 02:34 PM EST

Archuleta will crush all the music artists. Even TOML is not #1 in the radio station. Crush is not even on iTunes, yet and it's number 1!!! Woot!!! Yeah!!! We are celebrating!

CRUSH_SMASH Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 02:23 PM EST

ITA MARK RE: the vocal paralysis. That this kid is able to produce the beautiful sound he does with ONE vocal cord is astounding. You don't here him complaining about it, or using it as an excuse to fail. It offends his fans to hear ppl commenting about the "gaspyness" and breathiness that may be evident in some of his songs. I personally am in awe of his ability to compensate for the lingering effects of the paralysis and perform at this level. Love him, or not... but you cannot deny his grit, guts and determination to succeed against overwhelming obstacles. God Bless you David.

I am not a tween but I will certainly buy this tune and David's first album. His voice is incredible.

CRUSH_SMASH Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 02:08 PM EST

BTW... CRUSH was the #1 requested song TODAY on the NOON COUNTDOWN @ Z100 in New York City - the biggest radio station in the nation... CONGRATULATIONS DAVID ARCHULETA! UR ON UR WAY.

christine naman Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 01:45 PM EST

Mr. Slezak,

Thanks for being nice. Putting good words into the world matters. christine

terri Feltey Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 01:27 PM EST

I agree he has a great voice, but sorry this is just the kind of sappy songs he sings, not impressive at all, just more of songs fit for AI.

Dee Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 01:26 PM EST

There's no doubt David can sing excellent. I think the song is current, but I wont buy it because it's not my style of music (sounds like every other song out there) But I am sure the tweens will love it.

Jean Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 01:17 PM EST

I think David's new single "Crush" is a fabulous song and once again he sings it beautifully. This young man has more talent than anyone that I have heard in a very long time. The heart and soul and spirit that he puts into his music is astounding! I have been a huge DA fan since his audition on A.I. I think that anyone who doesn't appreciate David's music just doesn't really "get" real music and talent, maybe one day you will. If you want to be uplifted, inspired, healed in some way then just listen to David sing. He is a rare gem in the music industry. I think his debut single is great! No doubt it will be a hit. No folks, he is not just for the teens or tweens, I am 56 years old and love David's singing and love who he is. David has fans all over the world from ages 8 to 80 and beyond! So some of you should understand that he reaches people of all ages becuase of his gift and because of who he is. Can't wait for his album. Way to go David!

tia Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 01:07 PM EST

I LOVE the song!! and he is still so humble and down to earth!! im thinking i voted for the wrong david...

Phillip Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 12:30 PM EST

My god, that's boring. Who is making these kids sing this stuff? It's so homogenized and flavorless - nothing distinct about it. He deserves much better material, but I guess having a good voice doesn't mean being able to choose good songs (or perhaps override what was chosen for you).

ARCHIE IS #1 Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 12:27 PM EST

ACCORDING TO THE AMERICA IDOLS FORUMS
CRUSH BY DAVID ARCHULETA
IS THE NUMBER 1 SONG IN A NEW YORK RADIO STATION, THE SAME STATION IN WICH ARCHIE INTRODUCED CRUSH..
CONGRATULATIONS DAVID!

Denise Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 12:05 PM EST

Slezak, thanks for being a little nicer to Archuleta (because heaven knows, you gave him a hard time during the Idol season). This is a great start for him, and many fans are waiting for more to come. David has fulfilled the expectations of his fans. Good luck, Archie!

jaynelleb Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 12:02 PM EST

Love it. I will definitely buy his album. Tell him to record "My Boo" by Chris Brown. Soul brother number two!

pam Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:53 AM EST

Good job!!! I love your new song and you sound wonderful.

Lissy Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:48 AM EST

I think David Archuleta has a beautiful voice and is a very sweet person. I listened to this song yesterday on his MySpace page (yes, I'm a friend) and just didn't like it. I listened to it again here and still didn't like it. It sounds like a million other songs to me. It doesn't matter what I think; so many of David's fans seem to love it and that's what important.

bj Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:48 AM EST

David received alot of criticism for predominately singing ballads on the show. Crush is a nice pop song, decent melody and pretty good hook. It's a pretty good first effort for David and team Archuleta. David is a very talented vocalist, and I hope that in the future the people behind him allow him to showcase that beautiful voice.

Brian Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:46 AM EST

Actually, this song reminds me of a jojo song.

Mark Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:45 AM EST

wildKAT--I am a Cook fan, but let's be fair about this. David Archuleta has said in multiple interviews that his vocal paralysis is still evident and affects his singing and breathing when talking. If you've heard him talk, you can hear the breaths he takes. It is inevitable. When I listen to his music, I can't hear the breaths unless I look for them. He wishes it never happened because he's very paranoid that he can hear it. It's sad, but it's the truth.

CrushYou Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:33 AM EST

CRUSH will be the number song in the world. It will crush all other songs today and the songs of yesterday. We are the fanatic fans and we will make sure it is number one. Archie is #1 singer in the world and his CD will be #1 at every inch of the continents. Archuleta is the MOST famous idol in the world. They use his picture and his name to promote other idols. You will read about Archuleta in EVERY newspaper and magazine and online site like this one.

RE: Kath Mon, Aug 4, 2008... "Is it bad? No. Is it anything special? No. It's a pleasant, but ultimately forgettable, piece of Pro Tools-ed formula pop. No more, no less."
I TOTALLY AGREE. What fascinates me is that rabid Archuleta fans will NOT tolerate anyone voicing an opinion that is less than fanatically pro-DA. I found the song formulaic. I wish he would stop gasping into the mic between phrases and learn to suck in a breath off mic like other singers do. That trick alone would make listening to him tolerable. I do NOT agree that DA is the best singer in the world. Apparently these kiddie fans have never heard Josh Groban, Andrea Bocelli and other stellar talents. DA is a little boy who will someday grow into a good singer. "Crush" is pablum.

Darryl Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:12 AM EST

Are people aware that it takes a better voice to sing ballad than to sing a faster more rock song. The voice is put to work with ballads because you are singing words more that talking them.Try it yourself.
David singing CRUSH was a let less taxing of his voice than IMAGINE for example. Ask A voice coach.

suzeet Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:10 AM EST

This song reminds me of "No Air" from Jordin Sparks. That's good because Jordin has done well with that song. Think the songwriters are the same? Does anyone know?

suebrody Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 10:55 AM EST

Great song for Archie. I hope it does really well. Now, Cook haters, can you get off his back and let him actually RECORD the CD and release a single before you actually make an informed opinion. Time of My Life is fine but not his type of song (not a rock song, obviously) and yet it's done surprisingly well. Since he's working with Green Day's producer, it should be a far better CD than Blake's. Let's see Archie AND Cook have best selling CDs.

suebrody Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 10:54 AM EST

designer4davida Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 10:34 AM EST

Michael, your 3 part interview with David is still one of my favorites (pershaps second only to Elvis Duran's morning show that premiered Crush). I always wondered if you might have had a change of heart after that day and kept checking for your reviews post idol. I would love to hear your reviews after going to the Idol concert and hearing David sing live. Thanks for the review on Crush! I think it is perfect for his first single, but I pretty much love everything David sings because he sings with such heart. No doubt this kid is going to be a super star!!

Sarah Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 10:31 AM EST

I find this song just OK, a bit bland, really. Though I continue to be a David Cook fan (not that one cannot admire both artists, of course!), I think DA has an amazing voice that deserves equally amazing music to interpret and bring to life. Maybe his next song, or his entire album, will prove to be just that. I wish him the best, and know he has a very bright future indeed.

becky Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 10:28 AM EST

Michael Slezak, just couldnt understand why cant you appreciate David's voice & style, dont you find him unique and distinctive? His voice is so easily recognizable and amazing. At least, you are giving him positive comment on Crush. Stay tune, David will continue to surprise you and one fine day, you will be having Crush on David.

Michael Slezak, you have no idea, but all the archies are actually very happy with this blog of yours...because, as you have mentioned, we kinda say you as like one of the archie-haters during AI..but we're glad that you now see him in a different light...yes crush IS amazing, think ive heard it about a million times now!! and u said it right, its got just enough runs to please us fans from idol, and also not too much as to maybe not interest the rest of the younger generation, or any other generation for that matter..

crush is truly amazing!! love all the little runs and hooks here and there:).and OMG the background vocals are amazing(lol yes thats how crazy i am)..gah i cant wait till it hits number1!!worldwide!!

DAFanaticFans Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 10:09 AM EST

The most fanatic fans of Archuleta will vow to turn Archie into a millionaire by age 18 with his single and CD. He will be the richest 18 year old singer ever! He is the best singer on earth. Winning the Teen Choice Awards is just a start. He will have the most awards than anyone else. He will be laughing his way to the bank and will be richer than any of you and his fans. You will hear him on every radio station every second. Just wait for it. It will happen.

Janice Winfrey Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 09:50 AM EST

WOW - Great song. This will go straight to the top. Hope you make more very soon for us to enjoy. You ROCK my world.

"Crush is a generic r&b; song made for the teens/tweens. Many non-fans of r&b; are immediately turned off by the rhythm or beat heard in the beginning of Crush."

DACrush, you can't be more wrong! I'm a from the cradle lover and listener and buyer of R&B;, jazz and the blues, grew up in the black church listening to unknown singers of a caliber that could compete on any stage.. ANY day, any time. David has a lot of support in our community and is WELL respected for that innate, organic.. that SOULFUL essence that undergirds his delivery. To us, he is the REAL DEAL - we don't call him "little brother" lightly.

Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 09:04 AM EST

Great song. I was reading the comments and noticed that one poster/blogger who may not enjoy David has posted on here about 20x. perhaps you should get a life and stop trying to get Archie fans to visit your site. LOL. I find the repetative of some comments very ammusing. If you didnt like Archie on AI why are you reading a review of his new song and posting here over and over. I detect your age is 12 and your bored. Go outside and play. Very few negative comments and most that are well its the same person over and over and over and over. LOL.

Sam Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 09:01 AM EST

David Archuleta never disappoints. His voice is comfortably the most moving I've ever heard. You can't doubt him. He CAN sing the phone book. Everything he touches turns to solid gold baby! I'm in my 20's and I worship this kid.

ORKMommy Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 08:48 AM EST

If you hadn't told me this was Archie, I never would have known it. I really wasn't a fan of his on the show because of his cheesy performances but just listening to his voice and not looking at him makes a world of difference! I look forward to hearing more of him (just don't make me watch him)!

Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 08:47 AM EST

Beyond David's incredible, hauntingly gorgeous voice, his humble, earnest demeanor had me rooting for his success from the first time I saw him on American Idol. With "Crush" he is off to a great start!

Surprised Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 08:46 AM EST

AI really does breed rabid fans.

Deebie Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 08:18 AM EST

DA has an amazing voice, one that will stand him in good stead for decades, forever lending itself to new songs.
If DC can maintain a credible "rock" persona for decades, God bless'im.

casuarina Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 06:44 AM EST

DA is simply the most amzing young talent the world has for quite some time. Appreciate and respect his talents. Don't put him down with your uncall for nasty , personal comments. He's only 17. What wrong did he do??? All he did was sing so beautifully and show the world taht there still exist an innocent young boy who simply loves singing. Oh you HATERS stop posting nasty personal comments. Its so sad that some humans can be so vile!!

TCL Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 04:45 AM EST

Hi Michael - thanks for your review of Crush; I was pleasantly surprised by your open-mindedness and relative lack of cynicism ( well, compared to your previous articles on David Archuleta, anyway!) As an overseas fan of David, I agree with Dr ArchieFan's comment on Aug 4 - that international fans tend to treat him better than some cynical Americans. Maybe it's because these same Americans mistake cynicism for 'coolness' and in the process blind themselves to true talent and inner beauty. So, Michael, welcome to the light!

DACrush Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 04:03 AM EST

Crush is a generic r&b; song made for the teens/tweens. Many non-fans of r&b; are immediately turned off by the rhythm or beat heard in the beginning of Crush. Hearing the first few verses was boring which is a typical Archie performance, however the chorus gives it more life which highlights Archie's signature riffs and runs. Many listeners do not see this as believable as if Archie is only made to sing this like he is a karaoke singing machine. Crush is not his song. Someone else wrote the song. The beat and the lyrics sound very recycled to many people sounding like the rhythm of Tattoo and Mariah's Always Be My Baby. I predict that it will be a big hit with Archie's die-hard fans. If there are hundreds of thousands of die-hard fans, then it would be a big hit for Archie. Archie won the most fanatic fans in the Teen Choice Awards, therefore his fanatic fans will surely force this song to be played on the radio a lot by request and to reach the top sales by buying multiple copies.

rita Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 04:01 AM EST

Mr. Slezak,
I must admit that you were not one of my favorite people during the AI's telecast. I think, at the very least, that you were unkind to David A. But I must also declare that your 3 part interviews with him have been one of my proudest moments as a fan, thanks to you!! From then on, I have been vainly searching the net for indications of how you regarded him after the interviews. Now, this article has shown me that and much much more!! Thank you so very much Mr. Slezak. You have made this fan flip with joy!!

Christine Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 02:57 AM EST

Dear Mr. Slezak,

I respect your positive review very much. Also, I recall you saying how you wanted to hear David's rendition of "Crazy" in Hollywood that the judges called "incredible." Here's the link to it:

wow yes! david archuleta, already on his way to superstardom! crush is overwhelmingly perfect for him right now, it's fun, upbeat, and fits with his age. i love it. i think we should stop comparing him and cook, the show's over! and they'll both do well!
great job david!

Jeff Patrick Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 02:01 AM EST

Great song and I'm a senior citizen who grew up with Elvis. Now, just because I'm an old man who likes it doesn't mean it will not go over with the youth. For, I like Miley's "7 things.." and that did pretty well.

AFishaNado Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 01:52 AM EST

Not my type of thing, but infinitely better than the loser *fan created* Magic Rainbow song they saddled Cook with for his first single. Archuleta has a very pretty lower register.

That said, I'm hoping and praying we get to hear David Cook sounding more like HIMSELF sometime in the not too distant future. Not fair. This sounds like Archie. Cook got screwed.

Amy Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 01:43 AM EST

I really like the song. I didn't follow Idol this year, but he seems more successful than Cook already.

DrEvil - thanks for reading my thoughts... not a DC music fan.. can't emotionally engage or connect to his brand of music... more power to him and those who can... but I haven't resorted to slagging him and taking the cheap shots at his perceived shortcomings like ppl want to do w/Archie. I still put store in "if you have nothing good to say, say nothing."

Jeremy Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 01:25 AM EST

Kath said it best!

joanna Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 01:19 AM EST

I don't really like the song, not my type of music; I got out of the Disney thing a while ago.
Gotta wonder though, does DA releasing a single mean 19 is throwing David Cook under the bus?

jane Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 01:07 AM EST

I love David Archuleta's song "CRUSH"...This kid is so talented. He's going to be a huge star! Praying for more success.

mandt Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 01:06 AM EST

Dr Evil, you may have a point. I don't go looking up other artists. Why the interest?

That said, I think this is a great first single for David. It's catchy, but has a little of the long lush notes we really like in the background so there's something in it for everyone.

Dr. Evil II Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 12:43 AM EST

Archie Fans...The Archie Haters do not hate David A. Consciously, they know they hate David A.; yet, their subconscious mind suggest otherwise. That's why they check him out once in a while, and even listens to his newly released single. Archie haters are intrigued by this teen's wonders. What other explanation is there? I do not like David Cook, but I also do not find myself writing/commenting negative things about him. Why? Because not even one of his qualities intrigues me.

Emily Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 12:31 AM EST

I say I like it. It has a nice beat. And of course the kid can sing!

Gaspy Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 12:23 AM EST

*wheeeze* I wish people would stop making fun of me like at www.idletard.com

*wheeeeeze*

Marlene Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 11:30 PM EST

David's a very talented young man. This song will be a huge hit. The catchy, upbeat melody and relatable lyrics will resonate with Pop audiences of all ages.. especially females. After all, who doesn't remember their first big crush. I'm so pleased for David.

Terri Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 11:29 PM EST

I thought his first song out would be really beautiful, like the song of his I downloaded from ITunes, Imagine.
I was really surprised, I am sorry, but I don't like this very much. It is too teen pop, not showing his vocal ability like it should.

Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 11:02 PM EST

I heard the song a few days ago and enjoyed it. It's nice and catchy.

claudia Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:33 PM EST

I like the line "where this sneaker go" even better. Think I will sing it that way............You're right, it sure sounded like that.................

natalia Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:29 PM EST

i think its an awesome song, really shows off his vocal ability
plus the song really grows on you!

elda Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:20 PM EST

It's really the little David who rocked the world! The REAL american idol WINNER!!!!!

Xena Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:05 PM EST

The vocal harmonies and layerings in "Crush" (all David Archuleta, by the way) are actually quite sophisticated. This song is young and contemporary, but not simplistic bubble gum fare. The song actually improves with each hearing as you delve into its complexity and the intricate nuances of David's vocals blending and harmonizing. Not a bad start for a "charming kid" destined for superstardom!

doorsfan Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 09:50 PM EST

ITA DrArchie Fan.... give him the benefit of the doubt, he's 17 y/o... he's entitled to that space, that wiggle room to sort it all out... We Stand By You all the way David.

Fernando Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 09:49 PM EST

Critics who dished David during the competition did so for many reasons, most of which were bogus because most Archie basher reviewers are rockers by inclination. Now he has created a pop debut single that is receiving rave reviews and lots of radio play, even before the official release date. So those same critics are finding ways to crawl back to the real world and try to redeem themselves or be considered hopelessly irrelevant. The real pros in the business, singers, composers, musicians all, have been enthralled by the natural talents of the kid from Utah. As long as he remains true to himself and not be misdirected by greedy others, he will happily make music that all of us will be able to enjoy for years to come. As an older person, this debut release is not designed for me, as it shouldn't be. It's designed for those tweeners who 20 years from now will be dragging their husbands and kids to hear David perform in a huge Las Vegas showroom.

Viola Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 09:44 PM EST

David has showed us on AI and the tour that he is in his own league as a singer. The kid probably has the most gorgeous vocals I have heard in this generation of singers. Therefore what a brilliant move to debut with " Crush" - young, hip and so radio friendly. Finally a mainstream pop song sang by a true musical genius. How wonderful!

DrArchieFan Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 09:41 PM EST

addendum:

there is a better version of Crush -(except for the Morning Zoo comments inserted) than the one posted here, a less "over produced" version some complained about, with less background noise and purer voice.

I think the final cut that will be put out on iTunes will be even better. This "world premiere" version was rushed.
I don't know why - probably to take advantage that David was already in the New York area. They can't keep flying this poor kid back and forth across the country.

DrArchieFan Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 09:28 PM EST

"WHERE MY SNEAKER GO" --- taking me right to the music store to buy his CD when it comes out!

--- David had to do this single while singing at a different venue every night

--- No more comments about "Gasping" please -- this kid had the guts to go out and sing in front of millions despite having one vocal chord paralyzed (the cause), he should not even be able to sing, let alone as well as he does -

--- international fans --- YES, he has many fans all over the world, you see them posting quite frequently on fan websites, and I am afraid to say that they treat him better than some in this cynical country of ours

--- Be Nice everyone!!!!

--- David himself said "everyone is entitled to their opinion" (you just don't have to be nasty about it, really what is the purpose of that?????)

--- Thanks Mr. Slezak, surprisingly good - I'll take that.

--- just wait and see what this "kid" can do when set loose from constraints.

HAVE A NICE DAY

melanie Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 09:27 PM EST

librado- i have to say i totally agree with you. i love love LOVE music. it's one of my obsessions. and i've never fallen for an artist as quickly as i fell for david.... when he sings, it's like I go somewhere else. it's like my happy place. his voice is to me like a cigarette is to a chain smoker.... addictive and completely in control of my life. but i don't want to quit & no one can make me!

and just to top it all off there's that amazing personality and smile.

Chocomel Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 09:24 PM EST

Aww... you actually like Crush and admit that Archie is in fact charming. Am I supposed to now leap with joy now that you finally have some good things to say about Archie? NO - I (and many others) saw the greatness in Archie even while you were minimizing his talent.

Raven_Moon Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 09:23 PM EST

Meh. It's not awful, but it's not good either. Mostly, for me anyway, it's forgettable.

Kath Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 09:16 PM EST

Is it bad? No.

Is it anything special? No.

It's a pleasant, but ultimately forgettable, piece of Pro Tools-ed formula pop. No more, no less.

melanie Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 09:15 PM EST

This is a great first single for David. I just can't stop listening to it, it's SO freakin catchy & yet showcases his vocals. Of course I KNEW his single would be great b/c he is the BEST but this was even better than i expected. I made all my friends listen to it (most of them are Cook fans) and the ALL-- i repeat ALL- loved it. And I'm 22 so not the tween crowd everyone pegs us DA fanatics as.

On another note, I saw Archie in concert at the AI Tour in Atlantic City on Saturday and he was INCREDIBLE. They ALL sounded good (even Kristi wasn't bad...) but David just blew everyone out of the water. After the show I got his signature and he hugged me. Yes, I actually got a hug.

Best. moment. ever.

Congrats David on all your current/future success. I'll support you for life!!!

<3 mel

Mrs. P Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 09:15 PM EST

Why do so many of you think this is an all or nothing situation. I remember the Beatles first song and in retrospect it was nothing more than a little pop song and look where they ended up. I think we should give kudos for any singer who puts him or herself out there when they know all of us internet junkies will destroy them by being to rabid in either direction. If you like the song, great, if you don't maybe you'll like his next recording. I would rather listen to "Hey Jude" than "I Want to Hold Your Hand" but seeing progression is always a good thing.

librado Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 09:06 PM EST

for me "crush" is the best song i've ever heard great lyrics, amazing interpretation, you're really, really wonderful davida,i've been saying since david archuleta came out,no one like him hes one in a billion, his simplicity and nobility makes him the most wonderful person in the planet congratulations davida, the whole world is yours.

RIck Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 08:44 PM EST

How can you not like this kid. His humble, quiet demeanor combined with a super smooth pop voice will make this kid a long-standing member of pop culture. Good to see that good kids can still make it in the music business.

Sam Lim Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 08:36 PM EST

Crush is Phenomenal !

David Archuleta is A SUPERSTAR IN THE MAKING SO WATCH OUT AMERICA.

alex Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 08:34 PM EST

Thanks for the review Michael. I live overseas and rely on online columns like yours to get my weekly dose of entertainment news from the US. While I haven't always agreed with your point of view, it's your job to tell it like you see it, and I respect that you try to do it with a sense of humor.

I like Crush. It's a great debut single for David, and shows a side of him that was unfortunately hidded on AI. Admittedly, I'm hoping the rest of his album showcases his vocals more though.

And thanks for the morning chuckle. The 'where this sneaker go' line had me choking up my oj!

TONY Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 08:01 PM EST

Amazing how many people comment on this song already over 200! This is pure pop confection, easy on the ear, well made, good vocal performance, strong debut single - predicted TOP TEN. Nice job, Archie!!

Evan Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 07:54 PM EST

I love it. It's a great song for David's debut single.

alyssa Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 07:54 PM EST

this song is the best song ever!!!! Archie is the BEST!!!!

kimberly Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 07:48 PM EST

Obviously Slezak has been "Touched by An Angel" - Archuleta who has such a pure voice and an angelic face.

Mike Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 07:45 PM EST

I think it's a great song for his age.
Right time, Right song and Right on target!
Do your thing Doggggggg!!!!!!!

go Archie Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 07:36 PM EST

I love David Archuleta. This song is going to be #1 baby! i cant stop listening...
Archie sounds so good..Good job Archie! haha

JULIA SWEENEY Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 07:26 PM EST

GRANNY FAN IS SO GLAD TO HEAR FROM HIM!!

Howard Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 07:03 PM EST

Thanks for the great review, Michael. I was a fan this season, but was fearful of the music that might be released. But it suits Archie, both in style and content. Well done.

Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 06:48 PM EST

My first thought with the opening..."Take a Bow" by Rhianna.

free4all Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 06:35 PM EST

I thought Slezak's interview with David was done very well. I appreciated how kind and considerate he was. David's new single is Amazing! It is exactly what he should be singing. I love it and I am not one of his "tweens." David has a quality and texture to his voice that few singers possess. I hope his CD goes to #1 and he continues to make more music for many years to come.

Kevin G Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 06:35 PM EST

This is a great song that David Archuleta has done a fantastic job performing. I can see it being used in any number of the CW "teen shows" -- which is a good thing because it proves that he can sing more than ballads. This is going to be a big summer hit.

gloria f Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 06:29 PM EST

I was trying to read this story about a young man with a remarkable voice and felt that the writer had a lot of nothing to say. This young man has a gift to sing. I wish the writer had the gift to write.

Val F Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 06:28 PM EST

If Sleazak is going soft he's in good company! So are 80 to 90 percent of listeners.Go Archie! Crush is everything a debut pop single should be. There's nothing wrong with well-deserved success! Loving it!

Idletard.com Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 06:19 PM EST

Tobbie, I actually didn't create the website. I just figured some people here would enjoy reading. The website makes some good points, and I thank you for proving them so convincingly.

ANTM Freak Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 06:17 PM EST

Jesus is an Archie fan! LOL I don't understand the big deal about Slezak's opinions being less-than-kind about David A at times. Why do these fans feel the need to troll every website that has anything negative about their preferred Idol? Guess what, nobody's universally liked. If you enjoy his music more power to you. Why do you need to convince the rest of the world that David A is the best thing ever? That behavior just makes you look foolish and probably turns people even more against David.

Jesus Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 06:11 PM EST

The boy is a great singer and I wish him the best. All of you who are knocking David eat your hearts out.Its all envy and your making a fool of yourselves because people know your envious when they read your comment. If you cant say anything nice keep your mouth shut.

DCnMe Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 06:11 PM EST

Michael Slezak, are you going soft and gushy on us????? That song was BORING FLUFF that will be forgotten before Archie hits puberty.

martiee Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 06:09 PM EST

to all you haters, you're bad comments are not gonna be worth a thing once david's cd is out. The buyers will talk about how great His voice and music really are. SORRY!!!

alyssa Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 06:04 PM EST

Archie is the best i can not believe he did not win!! my best friend and i are his number one fans!!!!

goboywonder Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 05:58 PM EST

Yeah, that should be "understand", Thank you for the article.

goboywonder Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 05:55 PM EST

Mr. Slezak:

Thank you for helping me to realize how important it is to not be rigid in my opinion of others and to accept that I could be way off on my impression of someone's persona or abilities. And on that note, I resind my vote for you to be cast as the Wicked Witch of the West in "The Wizard of Idol" play. And I will no longer accidently on purpose misspell you name (see above).
In addition, I also unstand that All of season 7's idols can be equally successful in their careers. Cook's success doesn't take anything away for David, nor does David receiving well deserved accolades for his phenomenal vocal abilities reduce Cook's place as AI7 title holder. Aww gosh dang it! lets just CRUSH the all negativity.
Yes, now I feel better too.

Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 05:54 PM EST

David Archuleta is an amazing singer and the song is fantastic. It takes more than ten seconds of listening to it to realize how good it is.

Bill Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 05:54 PM EST

This kid is off and running, will hit "Super Stardom" before it is all over........

Bill Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 05:54 PM EST

I think this guy is going to grow into some really great music.

Mark Perkinson Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 05:50 PM EST

I really enjoyed it... It sounds smooth, strong and singable, with a contemporary R&B; feel. Not boring, but worthy as a first single. I watched the entire season of American Idol, so it's cool to finally hear him release something, and I'm glad that it's good.

BrandonK Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 05:49 PM EST

Meh. It's pretty forgettable. Reminds me of a lot of songs I've heard before, but I can't recall which ones at the moment. ;0)

starr Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 05:45 PM EST

david archuleta has a song but david cook has nothig haha david cook

Jill Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 05:44 PM EST

Awww I liked it. I think what is more interesting than the song is the amount of comments on this page. LOL. Whats with all the problems. Its cute. It will do well. Why must Cook fans come on and attempt to put Archie down? Well the song speaks for itself. I think it will be at least in the top 10 of the top 40's Thats what you want a top 10 hit. Congrats David. Good freshman song. It will do well.

Vanessa Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 05:35 PM EST

He is such a talented young kid. With a very, very shinny bright future ahead of him. I wish him the best, his voice is so pure and silky. His song is REALLY, REALLY good, even though I would like to hear more his voice (not so over produced), like in WYSYLM (pure magic, and tears of joy). Love David!

Joe Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 05:26 PM EST

B-O-R-I-N-G!!!!!!!!!

luvitall2 Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 05:25 PM EST

Glad you had a change of heart. This is a deserving artist. Hope you aren't the cause of any persistent negativity around here. Thanks for "being surprised".

cynthia Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 05:24 PM EST

Great song Hope to hear more songs soon. His voice gives me the chills in a good way. Take care

Fe Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 05:21 PM EST

Absolutely LOVE this song! Congratulations David, this is going straight to #1.

Jonathan F. Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 05:16 PM EST

boring, nothing more or less than what i expected.

ana Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 05:06 PM EST

It was a good song. I love David Archuleta.

Fan4ever Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 05:05 PM EST

Great Song, WoW!!!

It wonderful that we all do not judge someone/thing by listen to them for less than 10 seconds. Give the kid a chance, you maybe surprised.

Love the song, can't wait for the CD.

Kelly Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 05:02 PM EST

I'm not a fan of the song, but I'm not surprised because I'm not an Archie fan. While I think he is a very talented young guy, it's just not my kind of song.

B- Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 04:59 PM EST

Some of you Archuleta fans are creepy. Slezak doesn't owe ANYONE an apology. If you hate what he has to say, don't read his posts or articles. Also the song is good but it's not that serious. The rabid hardcore Archuleta fans do more harm than good. You put non fans off. Counter-Productive.

David Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 04:52 PM EST

After listening to the song for 10 seconds I turned it off. BORING!

Jandra Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 04:41 PM EST

Hi Michael!
Are you going to the Long Island concert? Go go go go! It's so much fun.

I have a cool Wonder Woman bag from Comic Con. I could mail it to you since you like her so much.

claudette Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 04:38 PM EST

Thank you for your nice comments. You have every right for your own opinions during the show. He did make wrong song choices. But you were great and fair to him in the interviews. I love Archie, but his future has yet to be determined. He's humble (unlike some fans - and please don't ever compare his fans to Claymates - we only have a small irritating group of them) and he knows it's a long road to break into the young pop market. The song gets better the more you listsn. Thanks again for the review.

Mary Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 04:37 PM EST

I really enjoyed your article Michael! I think David's song is a very clever choice for his 1st single:) His CD will include a good mix(maybe one he wrote himself)but for sure he has the talent to change the WORLD~one song at a time:)

Padraic Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 04:32 PM EST

Wow this could be the boringest song I've ever heard. Horrible.

palais Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 04:26 PM EST

Did anyone here actually pay attention to what Slezak wrote during AI7? He was not a rote Cook fan, he was an unabashed Carly fan and lamented her demise to the very end. If you're gonna bash the writer, know his actual opinions instead of projecting.
Still think the song is a good solid pop song and exactly what DA was going to get.

vanessa Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 04:26 PM EST

hmmm, wow I love this song. Can't wait to put it on my ipod

bReal Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 04:20 PM EST

Idletard is too funny - and true. I have never understood how freaky people become - they feel they somehow have to PROVE their taste in music or liking an artist is justified. What's up with that? I am sure most of the idol contestants have a normal, healthy self esteem (or my guess is they wouldn't try out to begin with) and could care less whether or not everyone on the planet liked their music or not. Why do these "tards" feel the need to protect poor little David? He could probably care less if I (or anyone else) likes his song selection - he probably likes what he's singing (or he wouldn't be singing it) and appreciate those that do enjoy it and cares very little about those who don't. Goodness - take a chill pill peeps.

Eileen Tansey Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 04:16 PM EST

I appreciate David for the same reason I did the Beatles - for him it is all about the music. He is very talented, his singing moves people and his sincerity is refreshing.

Fran Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 04:15 PM EST

I am 34 year old black woman who loves David’s new song. Every week on idol he was the only one (besides Syesha in the final 3 week) that I picked up the phone and voted for. He’s voice is amazing and I think the song is what he should be singing at his age. I have already preordered 7 CD and will buy at least 3 more in the store for Xmas gifts. Typically a sign of maturity is appreciating or at least recognizing there is value in all types of music, which is done well. David has amazing voice and he will continue to put out beautiful music. I just want all David’s detractors that he the support of more than teenyboppers and the more the merrier.

Darren Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 04:13 PM EST

So who cares if you don't buy this single. Do you actually like every single and CD that is available? Millions of his fans will be. Go listen to your own music and stop making stupid comments about things you are not familiar with. Or better yet, can a real talent. CRUSH is Amazing, THE END!

Tobbie Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 04:11 PM EST

Hey idletard, or is that IDLE RETARD. find a talent. You are showing all of us what a RETARD and immature brainless person you are. Spend your time getting a talent rather than coming up with websites targetted to morons like yourself. I have one word for YOU = LOSER, ARCHULETA = WINNER.

real_vermonter Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 04:11 PM EST

I like David's voice, but do not tend to like his song selection. This song to me is kind of bland and somewhat annoying with too much back-up. Definitely "pop" style, though. I would rather something with more of his voice coming through.

barbs Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 04:10 PM EST

Glad you've seen the light with David, Michael. Love the gush. Better late than never.

ADam Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 04:04 PM EST

For all the negative remarks on this post you guys are SO JEALOUS. You are so CLUELESS. Obviously you lack your own talents. I saw him in concert and this was just ONE concert, 12,000 poeple stood on their feet and gave him a standing ovation. I bet you would die to get ONE person in your life to give you a standing ovation. Who cares about your opinion anyway. Go listen to the crap you are used to listening. I am sure your brain will continue to be as numb as your stupidity.

elena Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 04:03 PM EST

All I can think of is...
really? The kid who seemed so awkward singing "With You", and now he has his own bona-fied pop music song, and it's good! Like, really good. Which is just...I'm glad for him. Real glad.

Idletard.com Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 03:39 PM EST

Go to idletard.com for some laughs.

Justin Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 03:38 PM EST

Why isn't it on iTunes?

Lint_Licker Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 03:36 PM EST

Archie fans are the new Claymates. "Smash every record"? Delusional much? Yikes.

OVER IT Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 03:27 PM EST

I think what we're seeing here is the male (?) Carrie Underwood. You bet he will sell a ton of records. But there's no "there" there. Just a vacant look. Eyes completely dead, like the Great White shark. It must move or it will die. Dance, baby! Dance!

yhut Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 03:23 PM EST

"...waves crashing, thunder rolling, and herds of horses galloping through lush fields.." - are you sure you did not have too much jersey shore on your mind when listening :-)

Definitely interesting comment,Michael , so now I'll listen again to see whether I can hear the horses the second time round.

DJAGR8 Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 03:23 PM EST

Well, I can't wait to buy his CD and I've already pre-ordered SEVERAL copies of his album. I'm sure the Archuleta FANS outnumber all those who are adding boring comments --- so we can only provide THE CROW when it's time for you to eat it!

aquayers Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 03:18 PM EST

I'm pleased that you now see the greatness in David,Michael.I know you will like Archie once you heard his debut single which is already being played on everywhere right now including my country,Indonesia.^^

grace Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 03:16 PM EST

To be honest, Cook is not my cup of tea. I didn't get it during AI, and still don't get it. His songs never touched my feelings. But then how come this 17 year old boy's voice always touched my bones? I think it's because of his pure sincerity to the songs he sings. Respect for each song and trying to deliver how he feels about the songs with all his heart. I love CRUSH. It is so good to see him finally singing what he feels as a normal teen. I have to give credit to Slezak who tries to be objective and gave good interviews to the boy. Slezak drew good questions, so people got to know better who David is musically. Crush is the top freshman and rookie song. Congrats David. BTW, Jive gave David much freedom to work on songs he wants to sing, which is rare to any AI rookies.

luvitall2 Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 03:14 PM EST

Album purchases will speak far louder than the tired mutterings of anonymous detractors.

angel Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 03:13 PM EST

AMAZING is what David Archuleta is!!! "Crush" is a sure winner! It is EXACTLY what he was looking for to gear toward his own age group. At the same time, the older fans remember their first crush. While this song is very radio friendly, it still shows his amazing vocals in the background...one word for "Crush" - PERFECT. We all know that his voice is the most amazing that has been heard in many years....and yes, he sounds great when he sings "When You Say You Love Me". (Its been said by professionals that he "out Grobaned, Groban"). Randy is right when he says that David Archuleta can sing anything and its great that he can put things out there that everyone will connect with. GO DAVID....I and millions of others got your back. I'll buy anything you put out there. And about the comment that he looks young in the photo....wonder why??? Look around at some of the newer photos taken since the tour started, I guarantee that you will find many that can ONLY be labeled as "HOT!!!"

Brookeabcdefg Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 03:06 PM EST

Hey Sleazeball, surprised to see that you've finally seen the light, although knowing you, you're probably just looking for attention. When David A smashes every record around, I would love to be there to see your face. Too little too late in my opinion. Good try, but the Archie's got your number, buddy.

seattle_girl Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 03:03 PM EST

MUCH better than the dreck David sang during AI and certainly better than his take on the Chris Brown song, but still too 'meh' for me. Def sounds like Jordin Sparks leftovers to me too. I'd like to see him find a solid niche for himself cuz I think he's got an interesting voice, but this vanilla pop isn't doing it for me. I'll save my itunes $$ for Jason Castro.

Broadway Baby Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 02:58 PM EST

TERRIBLE SONG, SO STUPID, ARCHULEtA IS for the lose

Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 02:50 PM EST

bReal... LOL... 2nd coming... very funny.. i like that.. :)

yes you are correct... it's a "pop song" .. but the fans are enjoying their teen dream via a big archuLOVEFEST..

Slezak and others can have their opinion.. but don't come down on David Archuleta for the judges opinions. He didn't tell them to overlook anything.. he never talked back to them... David is the first person to critique his own singing and faults.. much to his fans dismay. Slezak witnessed it first hand during his interview.

It wasn't fair to put the weight of your hate for the judges on Archuleta.. that's all. Now if a contestant were to get an oversized ego from the judges over zealous commentary.. then it would be fair game, yes?

Archuleta NEVER changed his attitude from day one. He loves to sing and he just lays it out there... love him or hate him.. He accepts all feedback.

Vicky Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 02:37 PM EST

This song rox my sox. And Pete, it must not be tooooo bad seeing as how z100 is playing it all the time and radio stations all over the country are giving their right arms for bootleg copies to try to keep up with the crazy demand. don't underestimate the arch angels...we are out in FORCE and will make sure every song David puts out is a chart topper.

bReal Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 02:33 PM EST

Let's face it folks - Slezak was calling it correct during the AI season - I have never seen a more over-hyped contestant before and hope to never see one again. After tuning into So You Think You... I see they are doing it there too (Twitch anyone?). The judges on AI turned a blind eye to "Archie's" mistakes so many times it was beyond obnoxious. I think Slezak was only looking for a fair competition rather than what we got. As for this song - it's a pop song, not the 2nd coming of Chr!st. Get a grip peeps.

gj Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 02:33 PM EST

wow, i didn't watch this season but this song blew me away. he sounds almost like an r&b; singer mixed in with a boy band.

Sara Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 02:31 PM EST

Hmm. Gotta love when bloggers flood the comments. :::eyeroll::: Now I hate the song.

cowboys4 Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 02:28 PM EST

PeteDogg, prepare to eat your hat! I always feel sorry for people who don't "get" David, but hey, your loss.

Cara Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 02:26 PM EST

"The David Archuleta Fan Club" ---> thanks, man, that's the most I've laughed all day. As for the actual song...hmm. A little bland, no? A little...heavy on the synthesizers? I didn't have anything against him coming into the song, but I have to be honest, I put in on as I worked and forgot it was playing halfway through. Sorry, but he's not getting my money for this one.

sasha Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 02:21 PM EST

Great review.

David Archuleta is a real talent...and this is just the start.

archu_adorable Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 02:20 PM EST

MICHAEL SLEZAK'S REVIEW IS SURPRISINGLY GOOD! I was not a huge fan of Michael Slezak during AI7. Sure, as he reminded us over and over and over, he was a cool Cook fan and frankly undeservingly mean to Archie. With that in mind, I was glad to read this review, because much to my surprise, it's actually pretty good. I was worried his review would make me wince, but his description of the chorus alone is prettier and more satisfying than a pantry full of humble pie. I heard waves crash and thunder roll as I realized how touched he was by teenage romance angst. While it won't win a Pulitzer Prize for journalism, it will win a bit of respect from David's fans. In other words, I'm convinced that Slezak was completely charmed by David when he actually met him post-Idol and is willing to now be fair and give this talented kid his deserved props.

Dare I say it - Michael Slezak (gulp) ROCKS!

Andrea Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 02:19 PM EST

People lets chill, Michael doesn´t has to apologize, as much as we hate it, he has an opinion an as a writer he use his right to use this media to express himself... no harm was done, and David Archuleta is working... lets prize to good jobs, the one of a good journalist who beside his previous opinion has the corage to write this article (NO LIKE ROLLING STONE that still keep his Cook vs. Archuleta´s war), and Archuleta´s who is working hard to please not only his fans, but other people... KUDOS TO BOTH OF THEM...

PeteDogg Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 02:18 PM EST

sorry Michael... usually we're on the same page with things... but this single is just as awful as I imagined it would be. David A's gaspy mumbled vocal sounds only slightly clearer than it did live, the song is nothing but heavy cheese... as predicted, David A will shortly fall into that bargain bin with Diana... and Justin...

PeteDogg Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 02:18 PM EST

thinkofmearchie Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 02:13 PM EST

David had me at "oooooo oah...oah ...oooh ....uahuah" ..LOL..

CRUSH is the PERFECT single for David Archuleta! Girls love nothing more than to hear a boy talk/sing about his crush.. crushing his very being and not being able to handle it.. *sigh*

The lyrics are quite profound and descriptive ... "You got me hypnotized, so mesmerized, and I just GOT to know... Do you ever think, when you're all alone, all that we can be, where this thing can go...... ......Do you catch a breath when I look at you.... are you hol-DING back, like the way I do..Cause i'm tryin, trying to walk away.. But I know this crush aint goin awayayayayay....."

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! *dies* This song makes you relive the sweet.. agonizing torture that is the CRUSH.

Bravo, David Archuleta! You're the only 17 year old that can capture true emotion in any song.

Thank you Slezak for the memorable review. I also quite enjoyed your interview of David. My favorite to date!

mary Bodolosky Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 02:10 PM EST

I'll never understand why people, including you, have criticized David A for singing ballads when that's what AI pigeonholed him for. It was obvious that he was not allowed to sing the songs he preferred. He wasn't even allowed to update a song, like longer for instance. Whenever he did do a more upbeat song the judges dissed him. Or, at least Simon dissed him. Seemed like they wanted a certain kind of show and manipulated it to go their way. I can't believe that you didn't see that.
Your interviews here were very nice and you gave David the time to express himself and give us a chance to see his so charming nature. A lot of interviewers don't. At least you don't manipulate. Thanks for your stamp of approval on Crush. We, his fans, all love it.

John89 Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 01:58 PM EST

While this review is positive, Mr Slezak has so much more to do in order to redeem himself from all the horrible things he did to Archie. Rather than wasting more time on Slezak, I like to warn EW.com editiors that their business has been at stake during this season. It's criticism towards Archie has been so out of touch to the general public that it has become unreadable. I have heard so many people stop buying your magazine and visiting your website because of that. If EW.com wish to maintain its creditability, please hire some new decent writers.

obvious Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 01:56 PM EST

I think David would be the consummate teen choice award winner. He and Miley Cyrus should tour. They could wear each other's clothes.

jeancat Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 01:54 PM EST

michael -i think david won you over in your interview with him and you finally realized what a great person david is --i could help but think you must have felt a bit embarassed while interviewing him after the many cruel comments you made about him during ai. But im glad to see you are now being more objective in your review of crush. its the perfect first single for david --i love it --and im not alone --last check 98,000 people liked it vs 1500 not (us mag poll). that many people cant be wrong :)

luvitall2 Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 01:50 PM EST

Guess there will be a few writers who see from the HUGE TOUR RECEPTIONS, TEEN CHOICE AWARD, and FAN EXCITEMENT OVER HIS NEW RELEASE that they need to run uphill before the tsunami strikes.

to SLEZAK Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 01:46 PM EST

Et tu, Brute? Michael, who got to you? The one thing you had during AI7 was honor. I know you had to hold your nose to write this review. Your taste level is way higher that this pablum.

BMK Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 01:34 PM EST

It was obvious to most SAVVY idol viewers all along that David would be given a song like this. Why a so called professional at the biggest pop culture magazine didn't get the memo, I don't quit understand.

If anything, I think this makes you look like a huge idiot for underestimating him. I mean, you were owned MAJORLY on this issue after proclaiming that he couldnt be current oh so any times. Methinks EW should start looking for a new writer come January 15th of 2009.

Omigod u guys, let's totally go over to PopWatch en masse and write the EXACT SAME POST over and over! That will show the world how superfun David Archuleta really is! Each post must contain the following: a slag against Slezak's historical feelings about David "Gilded Pipes" Archie; a completely ridiculous boast about how he's going to be the Biggest! Star! EVAR!; an average of twelve exclamation marks!!!!!!!
Bonus points if you mention His Godliness, His Ethreal Glow, His Purifying of the Planet, or that you met him and all of your organs became preternaturally strong and completely death proof!
Ugh. Way to turn YOUR unnatural obsession into MY revulsion, Fan Club!

I am sure he will just smile and say I am sorry to hear that or maybe he even will invite you for lunch, who knows he is such a good kid.
For respect to him, I am not going to say what you deserve and I am waisting my time.
Some have choices in our life and we choice how to live it.
I am sorry to hear that you choice the sad one.

Archuleta is so darned cute! That's coming from a grandmother, but regarding his voice, he has such velvet tones that seem to have no boundries. I don't listen to pop music, prefering alternative rock, although I get pulled into AI by my kids every season. But I really appreciate Archie's abilities. I await more!

Jerry Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 01:23 PM EST

Great song! Perfectly accessible to Pop, AC and Hot AC. Reminds me of Jordin's Tatoo - hopefully it'll be just as big.

mj Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 01:23 PM EST

Thank You Mr Sleazak for a nice review.

The song is AMAZING!!!!Has catchy and appropriate lyrics that fits David. A lot of his fans/nonfans will for sure relate with it.

Celyn Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 01:22 PM EST

Michael, knowing you were not a fan of David’s signing during Idol, I appreciate you being objective in your review of his debut single. I know David won’t win everyone over and I’m okay with that. I'm sure he is too. Cook’s music isn’t my cup of tea, but even I can say I appreciate his talent. I hope people can give David the same respect. I love Crush. I think it’s the perfect debut song to hook people with, but even I’ll admit that it doesn’t showcase his amazing vocals. No worries though – it’s his first one out of the gate. There’ll be plenty more.

I love Crush! Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 01:21 PM EST

thanks for the review! Yeah I agree
Crush is amazing. I love David's new song. I'm so proud of David because I voted for you David, I've always believed in your talent.
Good luck and God Bless You!

Talk about over reaction... get some perspective before we have to turn the hose on you Archuleta fans. It's scary. By the way, the war is over and the North beat the South. Thought you might want to know.

timbot Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 01:18 PM EST

Isn't David a talented artist and such a nice charming you man? I'm glad that more people are enjoying the music of David Archuleta. Can you imagine how many more years of excellent music and song is coming our way?

becbau Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 01:15 PM EST

I agree that this song is good, but "surprisingly"???. I think we all knew this kid could sing. I would have liked a little less production in it - let the purity of his voice shine, but I think the 10-14 year olds that have been fan fanatics of his and have been waiting to hear more of him, will readily snatch this up. So glad to see him go in this direction. I would like to see him step up and appeal to the 17-24 age group though like Chris Brown etc. It's looking like David and his Dad have a little marketing savvy. After all the balads that David sang throughout the competition may have lost him some of the popular vote but they really showcased his voice impeccably and got the voting public to reward him all the way to the finals even though we knew the balad wasn't going to be his bread and butter. Good luck David. Hope you bring a nice mix of "crush" type songs and ones that will better showcase your voice while still being in the pop genre.

Maria Nordlund Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 01:14 PM EST

David Archuleta is the real thing!!
He's soul is as amazing as his voice!!
I have never seen that convination!!
He is the best person our kids can look up to, HE IS JUST AWESOME!!
And he is real, he is a genuine nice, humble and polite person.

God will be with him always!!

Violet Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 01:10 PM EST

Great review Michael - I love the thunder rolling line! David was worried Crush might be too radio-pop-y for some of his older fans (like me) but I love it. Every voice in those layers of vocal is David and that's pretty intense The lyrics are perfect for him and the song is incredibly catchy. And the best thing of all was being able to see a video David hear his first single go out over the radio for the first time at Z100. What a thrill!!

And for whoever asked - I think Crush will be available for airplay on radio stations other than the premiere stations on Aug 11 and available for sale on Itunes Aug 12. ETA for Archie's CD album is (I think) still November.

Jamie Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 01:10 PM EST

I think it's pretty boring.

luvitall2 Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 01:08 PM EST

BTW....those "big drippy ballads" you refer to best showcase David's vocal gifts and many of us can relate well to them. Crowds in all venues are absolutely stunned by his tour song, "When You Say You Love Me". Remember that David has a wider audience than the one that you represent. Much wider. We love it all.

ZF Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 01:07 PM EST

Well, it isn't horrible, so hurray! That photo really doesn't do him any favors, though. Is it possible that he looks even younger than he did on American Idol? If Taylor Hicks can be made to look sexy, surely David Archuleta can be made to look older than 11.

Ronn Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 01:06 PM EST

I didn't like it. Bubbly

Maria Nordlund Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 01:05 PM EST

First of anything I would like to Thank You for opening your mind and lisent the song.
I was kind of worried my self but I like it the pirst time I lisented to it and now I love it!!

THIS IS TO THE FIRST PERSON WHO WROTE A COMMENT:

Sr. I do not appreciate your commnet at all, or what you are suggesting there. If you know David in person maybe you can talk but if not Please don't spread rummors, Do yo know that your tounge acts like a gun?
You have to be careful what you say!!
I had the opportunity to met David twice back stage, I stayed next to him the whole time!!,Maybe total of 4 hours!! He is real as REAL can be!!
Do you believe in the 6 sense?
Well I do, and the fisrt time I saw him on San Diego audition I could see right away his wonderful personality, there are things people can not lie about.
I know maybe I am waisting my time here, sometimes people just don't get it.
Have a good day.

p.s. maybe we should look around our own lives and see what is wrong with.

12 MILLION VOTES Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 01:04 PM EST

I seem to recall that number but I can't remember where from. The ONLY Idol to reach out to all corners of the world? The "international" Idol...let's lay off the Colt 45's so early in the day, ladies.

joji771 Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 01:03 PM EST

i loved this song!!! i was one of those folks who listened in the live stream feed... i think the song is perfect for David. :) its fun, catchy, and appropriate for a person his age. who can ever forget the anxiety and worry of that first crush?

Rose Tyler Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 01:03 PM EST

It sounds like a left over song that was originally written for Jordan Sparks. Is this really the kinda music Little David wants to do?

im12yo Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 01:03 PM EST

i never watched AI because i was so religious with my studies. my aunt introduced me to David's music and i have been so addicted since then. he is the BEST!!!

I THINK DAVID IS GREAT, AND HE SINGS WONDERFULL, HE ROCKS. AND GO ALL THE WAY DAVID...

Joe C Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:57 PM EST

And Michael, as far as your comment that 'like most of today's top 40 it won't win a Pulitzer for poetry' when has top 40 radio EVER featured lyrics that were poetry-in-motion? Besides 'Baby got Back' of course, lol!

Marilou Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:56 PM EST

David is a very brilliant singer! He will definitely sell millions of albums!!! He is the only Idol that reaches out to all corners of the world!!! Yes, David is the International Idol!!!

meg Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:56 PM EST

I'm scared to post here, but nonetheless, I was not a fan of archie during AI only because of his song choice though, not because I didn't like him or his voice. I do love this song for him and I think it hits exactly the right demographic.

doorsfan Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:55 PM EST

This kid has a paralyzed vocal cord, and manages to produce incredibly full and vibrant tones and textures that are nothing short of incredible. He and Elliott Yamin are imho THE HANDS DOWN BEST male vocalists that have graced the Idol stage,(Elliott sings w/90% hearing loss in one ear - amazing!)and my wish is to see David continue making the music that moves him, and his fans for a long, long time.

Joe C Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:54 PM EST

Hmmmm, I guess I would classify this song as Natasha Beningdfield lite.Which is to say, it's competent, tolerable, and completely forgettable. It sounds exactly like a song you'd hear from the Simon Cowell machine, but hey, 'Bleeding Love' is probably the number 1 song of the year, and this song is on the same level, so maybe it will be a hit.

Lizzybee Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:52 PM EST

I was very excited to hear how great this song turned out. I had heard it would be midtempo and a mix of R&B;, pop, with a bit of rock edge and amazingly catchy with great hooks so I had high expectations to begin with (Jeff was discussing it with fans in Chicago). This exceeded my expectations. It's really a perfect pop song, hook upon hook and seriously addicting. Yes I'm an Archie, I'm biased, but my coworkers aren't and they heard it and LOVED it too. They said it sounded like a major hit. Haters aside, that seems to be a concensus.

SanaLane Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:52 PM EST

djm - A lot of David fans want something that will exploit his amazing vocals that we witnessed on Idol. I think the point of all the praises pouring in is props for the ingenius debut song style choice as well.

He could debut release a Groban-type song that will leave everyone in awe, but all David fans know (& all critics will know soon) that he has the potential to become a hugely successful mainstream artist. This song choice was released for that purpose - & that realization is creating a sense of excitement in anticipation of what is to come.

Later on he will have a chance to mature in his music, but for a debut single, this song will propel David to superstardom in the mainstream market. ^_^

WTF? Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:46 PM EST

I think that overproducing the kid's voice was a wise decision. when was the last time you heard a Josh Groban song on Top 40 radio. Not that Archuleta is as good as Josh Groban, but his voice unfiltered will NOT sell records or get airplay. PS. Will the tweens and grandmas stand by this kid when his "true" self is revealed? Just ask Clay Aiken about that one.

palais Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:46 PM EST

It's good. It's not spectacularly life changing music revolution type of stuff, but it's a solid pop song sang well by a guy I always knew had the voice but never connected to me with his performances. Glad he's not saddled with the usual junk Idols get saddled with ( poor Bo...)

Josie Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:45 PM EST

Mr. Slezak, so you too have been charmed by the likes of David Archuleta. Good for you, not only for realizing that the song itself is a brilliant choice for a 17 year old teenager, but for realizing that this young man is CHARMING.

It feels pretty good doesn't it?

Nate Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:42 PM EST

The single is really catchy I am actually enjoying it. Nice summer song imo. As for those talking about him not writing and producing the song. Uhm so what? Ever heard of Whitney Houston? She doesnt write or produce either. It is his first single maybe he will write others. But, even if he doesnt write his voice is an instrument. He doesnt HAVE to do more than sing.

archiefan11 Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:39 PM EST

David is amazing inside and out. I met him in Detroit..what a great kid! The kid can sing anything and move our very hearts and souls..And by the way...his Dad is a super person as well! love em both. Congrats David!

Bruno Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:39 PM EST

Never was a HUGE fan of Archuleta, but I am glad he is given the proper treatment here. His song is a solid pop song. And since he's not going to be the type of "Singer slash Dancer" artist, his songs need to be catchy, contemporary, and radio friendly. Good for him. Hopefully Idol learned it's lesson and both him and Cook release good albums on par with Clarkson's ridiculously radio friendly "Breakaway".

djm Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:36 PM EST

Um "AMAZING"? Really? Let's face it folks, it's a pop song, not anything that's going to win the Nobel Peace Prize or anything like that. The version I heard was WAY over-produced - especially for someone who has a decent voice. I am not too surprised by that - I am sure his dad was there for every second. Can we just tone it down a notch though? The song is just ok at best - he is capable of much, much, much better and let's hope that someday he delivers.

rachel Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:33 PM EST

I love this song and I can't stop listening to it!! David's voice is so incredible. I love what he brings to music. He definitely has a terrific future in store for him. Go David!!!

luvitall2 Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:27 PM EST

Most DA supporters have known all along that he can sing any style. His Youtube videos over the years show everything from Spanish to youthful, to symphony (Joyful) to the Star Spangled Banner. He is deserving of this praise. Crush has a good tempo, good mix, is catchy, and showcases SOME of David's abilities. Excellent (again) David.

Kathy Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:23 PM EST

Well, the fans who followed David more closely on the show aren't surprised that the single is good. We expected as much. I'm happy for David, and happy that Slezak was big enough to say what he did.

Jean Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:22 PM EST

I hope Jive will not waste this precious talent. He is loved and admired the world over. I and countless others will fly to any city here in the far east if he ever goes on a world tour. Such a rare talent and what a beautiful soul he has.

rascal Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:21 PM EST

hey, gay as yesterday: you obviously know absolutely zero about producing music so why not stop making everyone aware of your shortcomings. In fact, reports from the studio sessions indicate that as the writers and producers started working with David and realized his prodigal musicality and impeccable taste, they wound up giving him a great deal more creative freedom than most first-timers ever get. Musicians have always been incredibly impressed with David because he is much, much more than just a voice. It's no accident that Crush is a winning selection, because David had a lot to do with choosing it.

AngelTash Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:18 PM EST

I LOVE this song! Any idea when it might be available on iTunes?

luvdja Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:17 PM EST

We always knew David was a multi-faceted and extremely versatile and talented kid even during AI when they saddled him with really mature songs for months. Now looks like people finally are coming around and recognize how special this kid is. Can't wait for the album!

Kenny Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:17 PM EST

To all the haters commenting here: RELAX. I know that most of you are Cook fans but come on! Slezak giving David some good reviews with his debut single doesn't mean he doesn't like Cook now. I bet he's still a huge Cook fan but I should give him full credit for just being fair and honest about his opinion. So haters, say what you need to say but there's no denying that Archuleta is a VERY talented kid and he just puts a smile on everyone's face when they meet him. TRUST ME, I MET HIM. He's glowing with humility and charm and he just has this incredible aura in him that makes you want to be good just like him.

Sue Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:17 PM EST

In response to comments below...David may not have written this particular song, but he sang it brilliantly, just as he does every song that comes out of his mouth. He's a gifted, talented recording artist and I can't wait to hear him record some of the songs he's written. CRUSH is going to sweep the airwaves and land at #1.

rachel Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:15 PM EST

I love this song!! I am addicted to it. David has the most incredible voice

Caroll Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:14 PM EST

I absolutely LOVE this song!!! I am one of David's older fans (50+) and I never get tired of any of David's songs. He has the purest, most beautiful voice I have ever heard and all of his songs are works of vocal art!!! In addition to his rich, lush, textured voice, David is undeniably charming, sweet, and sincere. He is a breath of fresh air! Once again, "Crush" totally rocks!!!

jwipe Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:13 PM EST

Thanks for opening your eyes and seeing the light that is David Archuleta. Crush gets better and better every time I hear it (which is in the hundreds by now).

Susan1144 Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:13 PM EST

You've finally seen the light that we fans have seen all along.

Tony Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:11 PM EST

I really like the new song. David was not allowed to sing anything contemporary on AI. They need to have more current mentors. Crush shows that he can sing more than ballads. It's a catchy tune!

Shari Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:10 PM EST

Then go do it Oatmeal!

This song is hot! A definite hit!

joan Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:09 PM EST

you know HE's .... AWESOME!!!!! XD

gay as yesterday Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:07 PM EST

before anyone gets too excited about this overproduced mess, remember he just stands there and sings the song. he didn't write it, didn't produce it. He just stood there and did what someone else told him to. his scab of a father i imagine. wow what a genius. i'm dizzy with awe.

cindy Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:04 PM EST

Thanks for nice review. Everybody has their own opinion, and I always admitted your opinion. I'm glad you also like David's "crush". I cannot stop listening to his song since last Friday.haha..lol...

sarah's mom Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:04 PM EST

Slezak, you've somewhat redeemed yourself. Don't know if I actually forgive you totally since you were quite cruel to our angel during AI. Glad you like the single, it's hard to deny the talent this kid has.

Sally in Chicago Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 11:59 AM EST

This is the perfect first single for him, but it sounds like Tatoo and some other BMG-Jive songs that have hit the airwaves lately by teens.
It's a hit no doubt, but let's see what his first album does. Remember Blake Lewis?

to SUNSHINE Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 11:58 AM EST

HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA! You made my day!

OATMEAL WITH A SIDE OF BLAND Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 11:56 AM EST

This song makes me want to blow my head off.

Kenny Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 11:50 AM EST

Now you're talking!!! THANK YOU VERY MUCH SKEZAK!!! For once, I became a fan of yours! So happy to read this article written by you. Now I'm loving you... so much that even if you join American Idol I might find myself voting for you! LOL!

Thanks Slezak! YOU"RE THE MAN!!!
We love David!!!

ealbino Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 11:45 AM EST

Thanks Slezak..You are human after all! yes..I LOVE CRUSH...it's been on repeat on my Z100 page and I can't wait to buy it!!! WHEN is it coming out on ITUNES????

vicki Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 11:37 AM EST

Hi Everyone, Did you know that David A. was on STAR SEARCH? I think that David A. came in 1st or 2nd place when he was 10 or 12 yrs.old. That where one of the judges told him that his voices may changes. That froze him. But I don't think his voices has changed at all. I'm sure glad that David A. waited little longer for Aamerican Idols. Do you agree with me?

sunshine Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 11:37 AM EST

Fortunately AI brought us David Archuleta. Sadly, they saddled the 17-year old with Neil Diamond, Dolly Parton and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Now, we are finally starting to get to know the real David. His debut single is engaging, fun and perfect for someone of his age. His album will undoubtably showcase the boarder spectrum of his amazing vocal talents.

Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 11:31 AM EST

If you even slightly love Crush then you should be highly excited for the future releases of this prodigy. His voice is going to get richer and (even) stronger and after a bit of success David will be able to release songs that show off his voice more and are more serious (but not too serious) than Crush. An excellent start for Archuleta. For those of us who LOVE Crush (like me) I can hardly contain myself when I think of David's future! It is one of the catchiest pop songs for a while, as cathcy as Rihanna's Umbrella, and it's really uplifting. It doesn't let him show off his voice though. Every note he sings in it is effortless, because he is capable of singing long notes such as those in When You Say You Love Me.

wen Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 11:30 AM EST

It's not only good, it's really really good! I love it so much!

wen Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 11:30 AM EST

It's not only good, it's really really good! I love it so much!

Pam Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 11:25 AM EST

I absolutely love his new song. I am 50ish, and I can relate to this experience. We all have had crushes at least one time in our lives. Good lyrics and medley. David you ROCK!!!! It's a winner!!!!!

Liz Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 11:25 AM EST

I love Crush, can't stop playing it.

kim Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 11:22 AM EST

I think the song is quite catchy and David makes is interesting. I just wish I could hear it on my local station.

Suzanne Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 11:20 AM EST

I'm so glad David Archuleta's single was reviewed-lite on Popwatch. I like it. I don't completely love it b/c David's amazing voice is a bit processed for me, but that's what's hot these days. And the ai-iyai-iyai part? I don't know, but a lot of people seem to like it. Good for David, and I'm happy to see EW being fair about the music value of the song and not condescending toward him.

natasha Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 11:16 AM EST

I agree--fabulous first single--can't get it out of my head!

Elizabeth Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 11:12 AM EST

Wow - I am pleasantly surprised. Good job Archie! I just hope for his sake there's a lot more of 'mindless pop' on it, that's its not too preachy or inspirational. At least for the first album. Play it safe.

kristyn Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 11:11 AM EST

well the song is better than i expected and the kid has grown on me. he is pretty adorable off the show but i used to think he was incredibly boring. i still feel like he got a jonas brothers leftover song

dj Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 11:10 AM EST

typical, and boring. sounds like every other pop song out there today. no originality, and it will probably do very well.....he still sounds so nasal when he sings....ek

collins Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 11:07 AM EST

slezak, i, too, was never a fan of archie's. not to say that i didn't recognize that he was talented, it's just that i was ALWAYS more of a carly fan. alright, fine, a HUGE carly fan! (carly's angels! woot!)

but the moment i heard "crush", i forwarded the link along to all my friends- idolatry watchers and not alike- with the accompanying praise: "it's actually REALLY good..."

kudos to archie and his handlers (probably dadchuleta) for picking a catchy song that will definitely build anticipation outside the fervor of the devotees of archie's angels.

heck, i might even buy his cd now. while waiting for carly's, of course.

Linda Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 11:06 AM EST

I have to admit, I'm a huge David Archuleta fan. I'm not a tween or a grandma, but, I guess what is now called a "cougar". No matter the age, though, anyone who listens has to admit that this kid has the voice of an angel. Enough said...I will have a tough time getting his new single out of my mind. And, I don't want to. I've already pre-ordered his album and can't wait to download his first single.

MindyM Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 11:04 AM EST

Well, Slezak, you have finally seen the light. I have not yet forgiven you for the cruel and mean things you said about David during his remarkable run on Idol. But at least, this is a first step toward making amends. I am thrilled with his new single. It's absolutely perfect! I love the r&b; soul vibe and the pop flavor along with catchy lyrics, will make this a huge hit. I could not have asked for more. Maybe now the naysayers will see what many of us have known for some time now - that this young man is not only a sweet, grounded, humble, decent person, but has one of the best voices to come along in some time. His talent is immense and will not be denied. I am counting the days until I can get it on itunes. Congratulations, David, you are on your way!

ahecht25(amy) Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 11:04 AM EST

Michael,

Thank you so much for your kind comments. I'm so thrilled that you like this song!!! It's going to be a hit!!! :)

Sevgi Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:59 AM EST

What's amazing is that you finally came around to see what we see in David. He is remarkable person and a truly talented artist. Crush is just the beginning and I'm glad people such as yourself are seeing the light in David that all of his fans already see.

Kindred Spirit Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:57 AM EST

I have listened over and over to "Crush". Upon repeated listening I notice more and more to like. Lots of little musical gifts in the background. I am so thrilled for David Archuleta and for us his fans. It is all about the music for him - and sharing his passion with others. Thanks Michael for your balanced review. It takes a big man to admit that maybe he was wrong. I really appreciate the good press for David's first single. Thanks again.

triciaintexas Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:55 AM EST

Mr. Slezak,
I must say I was disapointed in you through David's Idol run and all your negative if not bashing comments. I did pull out the courage to actually watch yu interview with this most delightful and talented person, and was pleasantly surprised at the respect you gave him during your interview and at how relaxed our David was, ofcourse that is David. David does not harbor any ill will toward anyone and it actually turned out to be my favorite interview of him. Still, I wan't trusting in you and what you would continue to say about our David, but your review is kind. Tahnk you for recognizing his talent and also for leaving out the 'competition' between him and Cook. It's over and I wish other reviews would let it die. Kudos to you!

AmyJ Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:49 AM EST

I think this is a great 1st release for David. His vocals are spot on, its Pop/R&B; sound will appeal to his age group and older fans. Its theme is timeless. It is catchy and great for the radio.

His voice is layered and harmonized throughout which is enough for us VOICE addicts at this point. His album will give us an assortment of songs to appease his diverse fan base.

Great review Slezak and thanks for stepping up and reviewing with a fresh look after the AI season. It is great that a highly visible non-David fan during AI, would take a look at a post AI release letting go of prior judgments.

Besides his rare talent and kind and humble character, his ability to learn and assimilate experiences at a quantum pace, is absolutely stunning. I can only imagine his artistry in the years to come!

LilMe Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:48 AM EST

Wow! Slezak, I am proud of you--finally coming around to see what so many of DA's fans have seen all along--a very endearing young man with a ton of talent. Makes me believe that goodness wins over cynicism....

TOfan Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:48 AM EST

FINALLY, Michael, you see the light.
As a longtime EW reader, I was so disappointed when you seasoned entertainment reporters over there completely failed to acknowledge the immense talent and, as you now admit, charm of David Archuleta. Before your interview with him, I found your comments often downright mean. I hope you will now enjoy his brilliant talents as much as we fans do. (See him live, as we in Toronto were so lucky to have done, and you'll get goosebumps, my friend.)

rascal Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:48 AM EST

Dang it, Slezak. Now I'm gonna have to re-think that idea of running into you in some bar here in town, chatting you up and buying you a drink, and then throwing it in your face with the salvo, "That's on behalf of David Archuleta."

Aw, heck, I'll still do it.

Slezak still sucks Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:48 AM EST

Nice way to get digs in at David STILL! Everyone in the world knows how much you campaigned against this kid in the competition. And guess what, we all knew he was a good kid, we didn't need your bad interview with him to point that out.

shebee Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:47 AM EST

glad you liked it!
your interview with David was one of the best..he is charming...and a humble, unassuming kid who is grateful for every opportunity given to him...I hope Crush is a hit!
Video from z100 of David listening as his song premieres...priceless to watch someone realize a dream!

Matty Worth Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:47 AM EST

In terms of establishing celebrity outside of the Idol-obsessed fan base, this is probably the best post-show single since "Miss Independent". If he can beat that song's #9 peak on the charts, nobody should be worrying about this boy's career.

leah Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:45 AM EST

i am glad to read your article about the nice things you have said about david. it said to me that you realized after you met him what a nice person his. it goes to show you people shouldn't judge a book by its cover.

Darrell Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:43 AM EST

CRUSH is amazinngly good. It is not just a chick song. For all of us who have trouble telling ladies that we are Crushing on them, all we have to do is play the song for them and we get our message across. Finally a nice Pop song that is so refreshing to hear without the garbage that is now popular. Tired of the Hip Hop crap out there. And I am 28 years old and straight. I like this song and Archuleta does not stop amazing us with his continued talent. AWESOME. Don't forget to download this legally so that David can get credit for his song. Can't wait and can't get the song out of my head the last few days.

Alex Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:43 AM EST

Very fair review. Thanks. "Crush" is a perfect first single for David A. Catchy, contemporary, sweet but not cloying. Props to David, Jive, and everyone else involved.

galaxystar2 Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:39 AM EST

I'm pleasantly surprised to read your review of Crush!! You were really hard on David during his run on idol, so it's nice to see you write positive things about him & his music now. It's a great, catchy song and should do very well on the charts. Congrats David!

Sam Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:39 AM EST

Yes, even you can admit a great song when you hear one hey? Hmmmmmm. So many people will be eating their words soon. CRUSH is Amazing, and Archuleta, what can I say, you just can't believe that a 17 year old can have that much talent and attract more than the teens and kids market?
Archuleta is an incredible voice, talent and so smart and humble and only 17. I can't wait to see him live soon. I heard he is absolutely incredible. CRUSH is a very catchy tune and already getting a lot of attention and the single is not officially available to ITUnes until August 12. He will be breaking worldwide records with his talent. And so many people like you will be coughing up and saying, well I thought he was pretty good, when the rest of the world of all age groups believed HE IS INCREDIBLE not just pretty good. Great Job David Archuleta. Keep smiling young man you are a STAR already. YEAH!

louise Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:38 AM EST

thanks so much for the wonderful review. i have been a fan of the CRUSHer since day 1 in AI and i never doubted for a moment what he is capable of doing. as paula said, he is destined for superstardom.so it was really no surprise for me that his first single is amazing. i instantly fell in love with it the first time i heard it and havent stopped listening to it since. im hooked. now i cant wait to get my hands on his cd this nov. i know it will be amazing!

Ari Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:38 AM EST

LOVE DAVID and everything he puts out there! To non-fanatic David fans...this song pases the twenty something test of music lovers who like pop and consider that "deep" alt rock without a good melody doesn't belong on the radio, especially while being stuck in traffic in NJ, lol!!

WTF? Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:38 AM EST

It's a chick song.

Tess Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:37 AM EST

Yes, he's great! Crush is actually good for him, too! And of course, the song is as we like his first song to be!

Michele Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:34 AM EST

Great review of the song. I remember reading your dislike for the young David. I heard the song and actually like it to. While Im not sure if this is number 1 hit single material. Its absolutely going to secure a place in the top 40. Good review and I agree the song won't make me change the station. Heck I might even put up the .99 cents and grab it off iTunes...

Annie Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:32 AM EST

Thank you very much for keeping an open mind regarding Archie's post-idol career. I am a fan of his and was sometimes disturbed by your reviews during Idol, but your interview w/David post-Idol was one of the best I've seen--excellent questions and David was obviously relaxed with you. I knew David was not showing his true self during the Idol process, he was obviously very worn down by all the issues, etc. he faced and am hoping post-Idol he can really show the wonderful multi-faceted talent and personality he is. Thank you again.

Adam Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:31 AM EST

With so much Pop garbage available from singers that are not even that good and made it to the top 10, finally Archuleta's incredible talent brings to life a real fun Pop song to show not only his incredible voice, but a song that we can all relate to who does not have or remember CRUSH ing over someone? I am a man a guy in my late 30's and know this song will be hitting the top all the way. I saw Archuleta in concert in Newark and I can tell you he is an incredible talent not to just the teens and tweens but to the rest of the world. How refreshing to finally hear a pop song by a 17 year old, where we can understand the words and relate to the lyrics. Congratulations David Archuleta, great job. Fans of all ages, love CRUSH and you as the new artist. Anybody who doubted your talent before, needs to get a real life now.

yolie29 Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:31 AM EST

Thank you for your nice words to David! He certainly deserves it! I love the song! it's hip and his age! I love how he always surprises his fans.

Sleazak has an epiphany!!!!!!!! Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:29 AM EST

Sleazak, thanks for reminding us that you didn't like little David all season long. No, really?? Um, who could forget?! Well, I won't dwell on the negative since this is a time for celebration. A time to celebrate David's excellent debut with CRUSH, and a time to celebrate your freakin' epiphany (of sorts) relative to David's commercial viability! Oh come on, Michael, in your heart of hearts you always knew he had IT in him! :0) CHEERS TO YOU!

aschan20 Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:28 AM EST

CRUSH is great! You got me hypnotized, so mesmerized …… cause I m tryin, tryin to walk away… But I know this crush aint goin away, goin away ayyyy ayyyyy

Liz Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:27 AM EST

i cant believe slezak just wrote something good about david archuleta. well, i personally like the single, but of course, i was expecting all the naysayers (like slezak) to trash it and say it was the worst pop song ever written. but i am pleasantly surprised. nice to see some open mindedness from slezak.

Chasee Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:24 AM EST

What do you mean surprisingly good? CRUSH is AMAZING! for the non fans they think they just discovered an incredible talent that we as his fans acknowledged from DAY 1. And yes, I am not a tween or a grandma but a woman in my 40's. I just saw all the idols live at the Atlantic City, NJ concert and I can tell you, Archuleta is even better LIVE. He is much more relaxed and his voice takes your breath away when you hear him live. He sang 4 songs at this concert and 12,000 people were on their feet and gave him a standing ovation for 10 minutes straight. And the audience was not just full of teens and little kids. The age group that attended were 5 years old to 85. Many non fans walked away and said he was one of the best highlights of a great concert performer. WOW. I can't wait to buy his CD and download CRUSH August 12. Only ONE word describes Archuleta...INCREDIBLE!

Teresa Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:23 AM EST

Thank you for your thoughtful review, and for finally acknowledging that David is very talented with a bright future. He was pressured to choose certain songs for American Idol and it is nice to see him being more free and contemporary. I look forward to seeing where his career takes him!

g johnson Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:21 AM EST

Archie hit it outta the park!!!!! Believe me when I say there were tons of us Archies up ALL NIGHT last Thursday - chatrooms blazing across the US , from Guam, Singapore, Japan, Canada, the Phillipines, India in nervous anticipation of this debut - and we all feel Jive has done our “Crown Prince” proud…. this is the beauty of him being 17 years old - the tiger is yet to be fully unleashed, and this debut goes a LONG way in silencing the critics and detractors who wrote him off as being unable to appeal to a “mainstream” pop audience…. BRAVO DAVID….

patti Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:20 AM EST

From interviews that I've read, David is stressing over not having time to do exactly what he wants on his album from the time constraints. I hope this song gives him a bit of relief because I think it is a hit!

Love the interviews you did with both Davids!

Andrea Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:17 AM EST

I like the song a lot, I´m think is a message we all can relate to, all the decision to weather or not is work the risk start a new relationship with someone... I like his vocals and is prety catchy... Good work David... I hope this kid became a great artist so we can hear his amazing voice for a long time... and good work to you Mr.Sleza, I´m glad that your opinion in "Little David" like so many times was called in EW reviews has change for a good turn!!!

Linda Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:17 AM EST

Slezak,

I loved your interview with David a few months ago. You did a great job. David IS charming. Everyone in my family loves Crush. It is a good start for getting heard on the radio. We look forward to many years of great music from this kid.

tawni Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:15 AM EST

ummm....is this article really written by michael slezak?? i was confused because there were good things written about david archuleta.

anyway, i love the song. i think it does exactly what david needed to do to connect to both his die hard archies and draw in some new fans. it's catchy and fun and makes me want to buy the album asap!

JONER Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:12 AM EST

Props to you for FINALLY admitting that the kid is "charming" AND "talented" and all in the same article! I'm pinching myself!

CC Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:12 AM EST

I LOVE this song. David is amazing.

mandi Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:11 AM EST

LOVE CRUSH! Great first song for David...stay tuned...this guy's gonna be a star! I actually think his vocals are far too good for this song but it's catchy and fun.GOOD JOB DAVID!

Lisa Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:09 AM EST

I would reserve the production comments until we get a better quality version of the song--all these youtube videos are taken off of live radio streams. You add in youtube degrading the quality further, and you'll get a "tinny" sound that's not actually there.

I think this is a wonderful first single for David--young and current with an amazing hook. And it gives him just enough room to show off some of his vocal prowess.

lily Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:08 AM EST

I Love it.

mabel Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:06 AM EST

and yes how can i forget to mention how catchy and addicting this song is.lol.Crush FTW! :)

mabel Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:04 AM EST

there's another versino(the final version) on this song in which David's voice is clearer and sounds less overproduced..try finding it on youtube or google..i lost the link but the final mix is much better.
Thanks slezak for your fair review..i enjoyed reading it and this single just goes to proves that david CAN be contemporary and mainstream.
I cant wait for his album!!

ron Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:01 AM EST

I love, love it! An awesome song and very addicting!

I cannot wait to buy it and buy the CD!

Chris Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:01 AM EST

I appreciate the positive review. Crush is very catchy, perfect choice for a 17 year old, perfect for David fans, it is fun and will be a hit.

momof3 Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 09:59 AM EST

It is good and I agree a little overproduced, as Marc in NYC states. I will buy this when it becomes available. At 17, he has plenty of time to grow as an artist and eventually have more say in what he produce. Good start

Ziba1 Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 09:56 AM EST

Seems like they rushed to release this song. It needs alot more work. I dont get the Archi effect from it. Anyone could sing this song.

NineDaves.com Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 09:45 AM EST

thanks for posting this slezak! i woke up to it on friday morning, and was too confused to figure out what i was hearing. i'll agree it's better than i expected, but i'm still feeling a little lukewarm about the whole thing. then again, at least he's not singing "i need you boo... gotta have you boo."

mark in nyc Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 09:44 AM EST

The song is good for Archie...but why is it so overproduced? The chorus is so tech/synth heavy on his voice. The allure of Archie is that his voice is pure, that is why Imagine was great song for him. yet in this song they do not trust him or his voice. I understand it on a Lindsay/Ashlee/Paris hilton "song", but David should be allowed to have his voice heard.

archfan Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 09:36 AM EST

I love the song! I can't wait to buy it and his album!!
