ALBANY - Two years after leaving office and abandoning White House fantasies, former Gov. George Pataki is entertaining talk of a US Senate run, sources said yesterday.

A Pataki spokesman confirmed yesterday that the three-term Republican met Tuesday in Manhattan with Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), who heads the GOP's Senate campaign committee and is currently scouting potential 2010 challengers against newly appointed Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.

The spokesman, David Catalfamo, would not discuss specifics of the conversation.

Pataki's 1994 victory over longtime Democratic Gov. Mario Cuomo shot the former state senator to national stardom.

But many believe Pataki's subsequent drift to the left and failure to control spending weakened the state GOP and quashed any hopes he had of turning his 12-year Statehouse reign into a bid for the presidency.

Likewise, national Republicans view the prospect of a Pataki run for Senate as remote. A longtime Pataki associate said the Senate talk was likely designed to draw business for his private law practice.
