Brazil
is universally recognised as the first among the
megadiverse
countries.
This reflects either
biodiversity
(15 - 20% of the entire biodiversity on Planet Earth
is to be found in Brazil) as
social / cultural
diversity (more than 200
indigenous people
and a range of local communities live in Brazil).
In order to protect biological and social - cultural diversity, Brazil has established an
extense network of protected areas which actually covers more than 2 million sqkm (25% of
Brazil´s national territory) and is divided almost equally between protected natural areas or
conservation units
and
indigenous land
(terras indígenas).
