Peter Martin

Jazz piano. Accomplished arranger and composer, with works performed by
orchestras worldwide. Currently musical director and pianist for Dianne
Reeves and a member of Chris Botti's touring band. Performed with such
orchestras as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic, New
York Philharmonic, Lyon National Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, Sydney
Symphony, and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Toured and recorded with
such artists as Wynton Marsalis, Joshua Redman, Christian McBride, the
Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Roy Hargrove, Terence Blanchard, Jazz
Futures II, 4-Sight, and Stanley Turrentine. Second-place prize winner
at the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. Served on the music
faculties of Tulane University, University of New Orleans, and the New

Coordinator, Music Technology program. Composer of electroacoustic music,
combining lo-tech analog techniques with extensive digital signal processing;
specialist in multi-channel audio and spatialization. Composer of acoustic
music focusing on extended instrumental techniques, modified conventional instruments,
and instruments of the composer's own design and, most recently, combining
this approach with real-time electronics and spatialization. Author of articles
on musical aesthetics and composition. Residencies at Experimentalstudio SWR
in Freiburg, Künstlerhaus
Schloss Wiepersdorf, and Sound Traffic Control in San Francisco. Principal
teachers were Peter Otto and Roger Reynolds, electronic music and Chaya Czernowin
and Chinary Ung, instrumental music..

Principal bassoon of the National Arts Centre Orchestra since 2004 and for
29 years of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the CBC Radio Orchestra simultaneously.
Has appeared at festivals throughout Canada as well as with the Chamber Music
Society of Lincoln Center, Santa Fe Chamber Music, Chamber Music Northwest,
the Marlboro Festival, the Grand Teton Music Festival and the World Orchestra
for Peace. Long-time faculty member of the National Youth Orchestra, University
of British Columbia, the University of Ottawa and the Domaine Forget. Numerous
recordings on the Summit and CBC labels, including a 2004 Juno award winner
featuring the Hetu Bassoon Concerto.

Dean since July 1, 2003; previously was dean of the University
of Kansas School of Fine Arts; director of the School of Music at Arizona State
University; assistant dean for academic programs of the School of Fine Arts
at the University of Connecticut at Storrs; and artistic director and assistant
director of the School of Music at Western Michigan University. Has studied
at the American Conservatory in Fontainebleau, France; the Summer Institute
for Women in Higher Education at Bryn Mawr College in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania;
and the Harvard Management Development Program at Harvard University. An accomplished
concert pianist who has performed as soloist and as a chamber musician throughout
the U.S., Europe and Latin America. In 1988 was founding member of the Black
Music Repertory Ensemble of Chicago's Columbia College. Doctoral and masters
degrees from Michigan in piano chamber music and accompanying; bachelor of
music, magna cum laude, in piano performance from Philadelphia College of Performing
Arts.
