The increase in wheat prices in New Zealand and Australia has caused a rise in bread prices in the Cook Islands by 20 percent, applying as of last Sunday.
According to Price Tribunal Director Helen Maunga consumers will now have to pay 70 cents more for a loaf of white bread which already cost $4.20. In 2005 the same loaf cost $3.50.
Maunga says the increase will apply to all types of bread.
Other national increases include Toa Petroleum fuel which is up by 8 percent and the order issued yesterday. The previous bulk price for petrol was $1.96 per litre while diesel at the time cost $1.98 per litre.
The increase in bread and fuel prices is nation wide.
Meanwhile the Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Sir Terepai Maoate is still negotiating with French Polynesia and other Pacific fuel states for cheaper
fuel supplies.
