She frowns, she pouts, and she sings pretty well too – singer Avril Lavigne combines her pretty girl looks with a punk rocker attitude to produce music that is defiant yet good to hear anyway (even if you are not a punk yourself.) Avril Lavigne is her real name by the way. Avril was born in Canada on September 27, 1984 and is now considered one of the top Canadian musicians around, and maybe one of the best singers in the world, come to think of it. Her debut album alone (entitled Let Go) sold more than 18 million copies throughout the world. In the US alone, Let Go reached certified platinum status a total of six times over (which is not bad for a debut effort.) Six songs by Avril have been deemed #1 in the world so far, while eleven songs are considered Top 10 hits. As of this date, Avril Lavigne has raked in sales of around 35 million albums globally. Though an accomplished musician in her own right, Avril also has her own musical influences who have helped her hone her own brand of music and singing style. She looks up to Blink -182, The Distillers, Green Day, and Alanis Morisette. Avril had her first taste of singing onstage back in 1998 when she was able to sing with Shania Twain (another Canadian singer) during a concert in Ottawa, Canada. She met Cliff Fabri (who became her first professional manager) in an Ontario bookstore where Avril was singing country covers. She came up with her first album (Let Go) at the age of sixteen and the album was released when she was seventeen. Right now, Avril is married to Deryck Whibley, but she still goes by the name Avril Lavigne on her albums. Deryck is also a Canadian singer though less well known than Avril.
