Baltimore Sun Archives

The holdings in the Baltimore Sun Archives have been collected from former Baltimore Sun employees as well as donations from the Baltimore Sun directly. Holdings include:

Print:

Special Collections holds a substantial run of the print holdings of the Baltimore Sun (1837-1968)and the Evening Sun (1910-1964). The Serials department holds a microfilm copy of the Baltimore Sun (1837-present, incomplete) and the Baltimore Sun Morning Index (1891-1951); the current two months of the Baltimore Sun are available in paper format in the Serials stacks (filed under Sun).

Proquest National Newspapers provides an online searchable pdf backfile (1990-) and plain text access is also available through Lexis Nexis Academic for the same dates. (Database access information)

The Baltimore Sun Historical Archives contains searchable scans of the Sun from May 1837 to February 1901. This database is not currently accessible through UMBC. The Enoch Pratt Free Library offers free access for this online database with a valid EPFL (Baltimore City) library card.

Photographs:

Approximately 750,000 prints, negatives, and transperanices dating from the 1930s through the 1980s. It is estimated that 90% are original Baltimore Sun photographs while the remaining are from non-Sun sources. These prints are organized alphabetically by name (personal or corporate) or by subject (view the folder listing by subject); this does not include the holdings from the 1980s.

Archival collections:

Papers of Philip M. Wagner, 1839-1995 (bulk 1942-1989): (Finding aid)The papers of Philip M. Wagner (1904-1996) cover the three main areas of his professional life; his work as a free lance columnist, as an editor and writer for the Baltimore Sun, and as a vintner and founder of Boordy Vineyard. The collection contains a substantial amount of correspondence, manuscripts, clippings and research files, along with notes, receipts, invoices, publications and photos, the majority of which directly relate to the articles he produced and illustrate the scope of his interests. The bulk of the papers pertains to his work as a writer both for the Baltimore Sun and for his syndicated column from the early 1950's to the late 1970's. Only a small portion of the documents relate to Boordy Vineyard and his activities as a vintner, the majority of those records having been donated to Cornell University.

Papers of Harold A. Williams, 1940-1970: Five boxes of records from Harold Williams and his employment and research at the Baltimore Sun. Includes correspondence, clippings, reports, interview transcripts, memos, lectures, notes, photographs and illustrations, Baltimore Sun writings, and historical publications relating to the Baltimore Sun, Johns Hopkins University, the Baltimore Sun Guild.

Baltimore Sun Memorabilia Collection: An artificial collection of objects donated to UMBC that pertain to the Baltimore Sun; includes a Baltimore Sun mailbox, plaque, ashtray, and a portion of the iron front decoration from the former Baltimore Sun building which burned in the 1904 Baltimore fire.

Records of the Baltimore Sun Foreign Bureaus, 1970-2007 (bulk 1970-1990): Two boxes from the Baltimore Sun foreign bureaus. Files are organized by geographic location; items from all continents (except Antarctica) are represented. Materials include correspondence, financial statements, clippings, maps, and photographic prints, slides, and negatives.

Baltimore Sun Financial and Selected Labor Records, 1837-1986: Contains financial records from the Baltimore Sun including 174 ledgers for day books, checkbooks, debits and credits; receipts, checks, balance sheets, monthly financial statements, and tax returns.
