STATEMENT BY ANDREW FEINSTEIN MP

30 August 2001.

STATEMENT

Andrew Feinstein MP

It is with sadness that I intend to resign from Parliament with effect from the end of August 2001.

I have realised over the past few months that I can no longer play a meaningful role in Parliament under the present political strictures.

I would like to thank the ANC for giving me the opportunity to play a very small role in our new democracy since 1994. I have been both privileged and honoured to serve the people of South Africa.

I have, however, been saddened by the manner in which government and the ANC in Parliament have handled the controversial armaments deal and the subsequent investigation thereof.

The manner in which this issue has been handled has, and will continue to, detract from many of the excellent things the ANC government has undertaken; from national reconciliation to sound economic management to delivery on key social needs.

In leaving I would like to thank my colleagues who, with a few exceptions, have provided comradeship and friendship over the past seven and a half years. An especial thanks to those, both inside and outside the ANC, who have been supportive during the past difficult year.

It is my intention to remain a member of the ANC. As such I will continue to be loyal to the principles of the organisation but will not hesitate to criticise when appropriate/
