The Programme Coordinator for Department of Human Resources has cast a warning for scholarshippers who breach their contracts. Ngarangi Tangaroa says students who are awarded overseas scholarships for a certain number of years are binded to return and work in the Cook Islands for the same period.
She says failing to do so automatically requires the student to pay a $10,000 bond which is included in the scholarship contract. She also explained that an overseas or New Zealand Aid funded scholarship is worth about $25,000 per year and if a study period is for three years, "then that's a lot of money".
HR manager Frances Topa says the amount is a huge investment in scholarshippers and "we want them to remember their contract".
Tangaroa adds that HR takes breaching of any contract seriously.
