One-sided

The report "Narmada disaster toll 54" (April 12) is one-sided as it is based exclusively on the official version. The BJP has laid the blame at the door of the villagers by saying it was common knowledge that water from the Indira Sagar dam was being released in the evenings and that the villagers should have known better before getting into the river to perform puja.

Not all the villagers knew that water is released everyday and that its level would rise suddenly. It was known only to tribal hamlets and the administration. Most of those who died were from the upland plateau region and quite far from the Narmada banks. They had no way of knowing. It was the responsibility of the administration to warn them and make arrangements for their protection.
