Can the unexpected be expected from Netanyahu’s new Israel Government?

Against the background of the mixed feelings of relief and anxiety with which Israelis have greeted the new Benjamin Netanyahu led Government – relief because the long, drawn out coalition negotiations are finally at an end, and anxiety over the prospect that the incoming predominantly right-wing administration could be on a collision course with the West over the proposed two-state solution to the seemingly intractable Israel/Palestinian conflict – a rather curious political precedent could well come into play, prompting optimistic observers to expect the unexpected, yet again.

During a recent visit to several university campuses in the U.S., I discovered that there is more sympathy for Hamas there than there is in Ramallah.

Listening to some students and professors on these campuses, for a moment I thought I was sitting opposite a Hamas spokesman or a would-be-suicide bomber.
