Killzone 2 ships 600,000 in NA, first DLC due April

[UPDATE] Sony VP of product marketing Scott Steinberg says Guerrilla Games' shooter has "exceeded our expectations"; first DLC detailed.

Killzone 2 is one of Sony's highest-profile exclusives, so its strong debut last month came as no real surprise. According to industry stat-trackers the NPD Group, Guerrilla Games' long-in-the-making sci-fi shooter sold 323,000 units in the US in just 48 hours following its February 27 release on the PlayStation 3. With NPD expected to release its sales estimates for March next week, Sony has independently confirmed that Killzone 2 has continued to sell well.

Speaking to Game Daily, Sony Computer Entertainment of America vice president of product marketing Scott Steinberg said this week that Killzone 2 sales have "exceeded our expectations," having surpassed the 500,000 unit mark. [UPDATE] GameSpot has since confirmed with Sony that Killzone 2's most-recent sell-through total--meaning copies of the game sold to retailers--stands at 600,000 units in North America only.

"Killzone 2 has been the fastest SCEA PS3 title to break the 500,000 unit mark and it's also the highest selling SCEA PS3 title for the first 30 days out of launch," Steinberg told Game Daily. "So far, we are extremely happy with the results."

To keep that 500,000-strong army interested in the title, Guerrilla Games has also detailed the first batch of downloadable content for the shooter. Speaking to Game Trailers last night, Guerrilla Games managing director Hermen Hulst revealed that the first DLC pack, titled Steel and Titanium, will contain two multiplayer maps. Pricing information was not detailed, but Hulst did confirm that the pack will be available "toward the end of April."

The first map is set aboard the ISA tech cruiser New Sun, and Hulst noted that gameplay will focus on vertically oriented firefights. "You've got multiple decks, so you'll be shot at from walkways upstairs as well as downstairs," he said. The second map takes place aboard two high-speed Helghast freight trains, with gamers tasked with navigating the precarious routes between the two speeding bullets.

"These are two fan favorite settings from single-player that we're bringing over," commented Hulst on the upcoming maps. "However, going forward, you're going to get some proper new features as well." As for those future releases, Hulst teased that the next DLC pack will revive a number of maps from the original Killzone, released for the PlayStation 2 in 2004.

    Disagree once again. I'm not even the biggest fan of FPS but this game has great replay value to me. Nothing is too frustrating and the levels are so beautiful and fun! Multiplayer is also as addicting as COD.

    @MOBS:...Yes...because games are ALL about the graphics, so if KZ2 LOOKS better than CoD , GoW or Halo, it HAS to be better. Because games aren't for playing, they're for staring at, right? Pssst...they're not called video pictures, they're called video games. XD

    Didn't Age of Conan brag about how many units they SHIPPED too and we all know how that turned out. The NPD data will show the true story. Maybe decent sales will keep the PS3 around longer, never hurts to have something to laugh at.

    @isaac2580: Ahhh stop it you're killing me. Excusez moi. What really gets me is that you didn't spell Sony correctly, but you DID manage Potatoes. It's almost as though your inner fanboy is interfering with basic functions. Anyway, it hardly matters since NONE of your posts have been remotely on topic... and this from someone who has been known to stray FAR from my original point... where was I?

    Oh yes... I hope that we can ride the trains... that would make it almost like my favourite MP level in Duke Nukem 3d... Now I just need some trip bombs and pipe bombs and we can get cracking!

    @Eazy1891 I respectfully disagree about the PS3 not having great exclusives.. I've owned pretty much all of them and have really enjoyed them all! Most have a great single player original story to them which I think gaming shouldn't lose track of. When I owned a 360 it was pretty much like having games for PC. They're all online sci-fi/horror shooters. If that's what the only type of games you like than fine, xbox is where it's at. But I like variety, and the PS3 delivers with original titles. Besides, I'm on this page to talk about the new maps for K2, so if you're just here to hate than get lost! I don't go on Halo sights and debate because I'm not jealous or threatened like you seem to be..

    @clakenoki: Thank you. I was about 9/10 through Oblivion when my 360 died and took the saves with it. I have a new one, and the new architecture seems much improved, but to minimize the RROD, well, it would be like getting nostalgiac for the Yugo.


    @fps d0minat0r: I hear you. I don't know why anyone uses Halo 3 as a benchmark of anything. GoW 1, never mind 2 blows it so far out of the water that it isn't funny. Killzone 2 competes with that class of game, not the tragically dissapointing finale to a once-promising story.

    That's funny. I like how you justify the 'Red ring of death' like it's no big deal. It's like 360 fanboys just except that their system will break no matter what and are ready for the inconvenience of sending it back to get another refurbished pile of ish. But it's free so it's OK that everyone's system breaks! HAHAHAHAHA!! I'm speaking from experience-when my 360 broke down for the second time, I gave it to by brother and bought a PS3. Been great for 3 years and has a lot of miles on it. If you like playing all kinds of online games then yeah, 360 live is the better bet. But if you only have time for a few exclusives, sports games and Blu ray movie watching with your favorite girl, then the PS3 has the better package deal! It's more of a social gaming console.

    lol even if halo sold a billion it doesnt mean its anywhere near killzone 2 in quality issues......

    the graphics just about scraped into the "next-gen" category and having said that, it wasnt that much of an improvement from halo 2.....but ofcourse xbox didnt have benchmarks like MGS4 to compare with =)

    now they do, they cant match the quality.....alan wake looks good.....oh yh lets not forget thats a pre-rendered cut-scene just like the good scenes in gears of war are.

    @thekey: Everyone isn't so honest about having a strong preference for one console, without being a psychotic about bashing the other. Except for the ocassion "3FIXME" comment... which I find hard to argue with since I'm still on my first PS3, and my 2nd 360...anyway, the point is that if you're a fan, and not a fanboy... that last vestige of "my console is better than yours" is just getting in the way of the decent points you continue to make. It might be silly, and people might unfairly judge you, so why give them an excuse to write off your opinions? You have some good ones, from where I'm standing.

    @MOBS: Can't you make one comment without inflaming your fellow fanboys?! Forget the sales figures, for fans of DLC this is great, for people like me who enjoy KZ2, but not DLC, this is irrelevant. For a fanboy, lets face it, you'd be praising a gilded turd, so when a really fun game like KZ2 comes along, it just sounds like you're saying the same thing. You don't talk so much about what you love about a system or game, you just degrade the other ones, and tout sales figures. Why?! Why bother?! Then challenging people to Virtua Fighter? What the heck?!


    I'll just make my on the DLC issue: Don't buy it yet. Please, for the rest of us, who love the game or hate it or just don't care... this is about gaming as a whole. Every time you buy DLC, before price drops, before it becomes free or packaged with other DLC into something that justifies the price, you're saying "Do this to me again, and do it harder, I'll take it.". This is one arena where we can make a clear and rapid statement as consumers, and say that even with good games like KZ2, we're not going to pay 10 bucks for a couple of maps. That is INSANE.

    I'm a fan of the fact that Hulst noted that the next DLC update is not going to be a map pack but a true content update.

    I hope that it means MP vehicle implementation, new MP classes/rankings, or (fingers crossed) co-op and split-screen single and multiplayer.

    Yadda yadda...the game is SICK and I can't wait for DLC. For those of you arguing, keep in mind that most multiplatform games are still originally coded on computers because it's simply easier that way, which does give the 360 a light advantage in running everything smoothly, etc. I have only a PS3, but I can admit that Sony's big mistake has always been its insistence on using some crazy proprietary hardware that goofs out all the game designers. They're still figuring it out, but KZ2 is prime evidence that when they do, it results in some immaculate gaming. In the end, you really have to admit that it's not which console you have that's going to determine how pretty everything looks, but rather your tv, and whether you had it THX calibrated, etc.

    the key, tell it like it is brother. Ps3 is the ultimate right now, and you can bet we'll get that DLC GTA 4 has on a Bluray down the line. Look we are getting the supposedly exclusive Ninja Gaiden 2 in the Form of Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2! Only we're getting two new playable characters and on-line co-op mode to boot!     Back to topic: Who here actually has Killzone 2? That will weed out the real opinions that matter. Coming here with sour grapes at Killzone 2s success doesn't exactly paint you in an objective light. Im all for playing This game for hours. It just seems sometimes the ranked games are stuck on one map type for a little too long. It reaches the point where Im looking for game rooms based on the other maps but cant find any. It probally has to do with my gaming time. Anyway this game is coming into its own, with WAY more people Up in the ranks and using their specialized classes unique abilities. Glad to see the Bluray ROMS coming into their own, producing games 7 gig DVD Roms can only dream to match. Kudos to Guerrilla games doing 600k in sales in a poor sales month during the worst recession in decades , no less.

    i never really liked to to play fps games and any game online but after i played this i swear that my game taste took a full 360 turn (not the console) and i started to enjoy every fps game that comes out as well as kz2 was the first game i take online.......i am so excited about the new maps! btw my birthday is at the end of april, how lucky am i?

    Killzone 2 is going to sell even more this holiday season. Halo 3/Halo wars eat your heart out. Xflop 3Fixme (Yeah I said it) is obsolite. Have me banded if you fanboys want to,(Because thats who would have my comments removed.) it will just prove one thing that you feel threatened, that the PS3 and it's games might actually be superior.(And they are in my opinion.) Killzone 2 is an excellent game, Halo 3, Gears of War 2 are not. End of story. Even it it didn't sell well. Kudos to Guerrilla games!

    @phantom: i agree it did get out of hand. sorry to everyone...overall i believe killzone is a 9/10 great game but still although im used to it the stiffness is kind of annoying in multiplayer and i have to have the intensity at wierd levels wen i usually dont in other games...only thing wrong with multiplayer is if there wasnt any tacticians then theres only one spawn site, and without medics then u sit around for 10 seconds waving your arm around for nothing...yet it is very fun and keeps me interacting..."campers" around spawn sites are a sliht problem but hey thats in every multiplayer game...story was good, i felt kind of close to the main character and all in all this dlc gives me a reason 2 by a psn redeem card...i just hope there is more then just 2 maps and at most $5

    Armored Core-PS3 Def Jam Icon-360 Street Homecourt-360 Tennis 3-PS3 Oblivian-360(hard decision because parts were better in ps3 in certain things yet better on 360 on other things) SpiderMan 3-PS3(things were so much different in the pictures) lol MLB 2k7 hands down 360 unless everyone is heavier set in mlb then id give it 2 ps3

    All the Micro$uck fanboys in the world can post in here and it wont change the fact thatKILLZONE 2 is the TOP FPS out there on any console. Getting peed in the pants over it selling 600, 000 units isnt going to help your a cause. Charlie if you truly were a PS3 owner youd be playing KZ2 now, instead of making idiot comments that M$uck has kept it as just a Bluray player. How have M$uck magically done that? By Highjacking shipments of LBP MGS 4, Resitance 2 and KZ2? Hello clown. PS3 is a BLUray GAME player now. If your math is bad 40 gigs > 7 gigs on cheap gip 360s DVD roms. Now embrace the Horror: 360s obsolete. Some twit could come into this thread boasting the merits of the Nintendo 64, it would make about as much sense as Nappa and Charlie. And I have 360, I had to open it up and add a bigger heatsink so I dont get RROD, and I had to buy a new DVD rom player for it when the original died and flash the firmware myself, so dont tell me the merits of 360. its a faulty piece of crap I just keep around for Virtua Fighter 5 online.
