What we heard: On Monday, Ubisoft set the gears of the Assassin's Creed 2 hype machine in motion, launching a teaser site for the sequel to 2007's well-received multiplatform action adventure. Visitors to the site are greeted with a brief Flash clip panning through the journal of famed Italian inventor Leonardo da Vinci. The short teaser ends with word that a full review of Assassin's Creed 2 is expected to arrive with the upcoming issue of Game Informer magazine, which is owned by retailer GameStop.

On its Web site today, Game Informer confirmed that Assassin's Creed 2 will indeed be the cover story of its upcoming issue. The site also noted in a brief blurb that the title will be set in "Renaissance-era Venice" and will follow the travails of new protagonist Ezio, a young Italian noble. For more on its "world exclusive," the blurb teases, gamers will have to spring for the May issue of the mag...

...or wait until the Internet gets its collective hands on it a week early. Yesterday, a poster on Ubisoft's official forums offered a detailed accounting of purported Assassin's Creed 2 information that will be included in the May issue of Game Informer. (Before the post was deleted by a Ubisoft forums administrator, a GameFAQs user secured a copy of the original message.)

The post offers a litany of alleged details on Assassin's Creed 2. According to the original message, the game will offer a number of famous Venetian locales, including da Vinci's workshop, Saint Mark's Basilica, The Grand Canal, The Little Canal, and the Rialto Bridge. Players will also supposedly be afforded trips through the Tuscan countryside, circa 1476. A number of historical figures will also reportedly be present, including Niccolo Machiavelli, Caterina Sofrza, and Lorenzo de Medici, the latter of which is said to be the subject of an assassination attempt.

Ezio--full name Ezio Auditore de Firenze--will apparently have a number of weapons to choose from, including "an axe, a hammer, a mace, a spear, two different sword types, a [halberd], and two smaller blades." Each weapon is said to have a special move associated with it, and Ezio will be able to disarm opponents and use their fumbled weaponry against them.

Continuing with the Venice theme, swimming will reportedly be an option in the game. And, as speculated following Ubisoft's official teaser, the leaked details claim that Ezio will be able to take to the skies using da Vinci's flying machine. The report also states that a day-and-night cycle has been added to the game.

Moving on to specific gameplay details, the Game Informer reveal will also reportedly say that Assassin's Creed will sport 16 mission types, a dramatic increase over the original's four. Two mission types supposedly not included, however, will be eavesdropping and pickpocketing. A number of new enemy types are said to have been added, including archers, "as well as elite enemies, dagger wielders, 'Brutish' armored troops with heavy armor and two-handed swords and axes, and an intelligent halberd enemy will probe hiding places with their weapons if they think you're nearby."

The post goes on to state that Assassin's Creed 2 will also include a number of holdover mechanics from the original, including tower climbing and horseback riding, and assassinations can now reportedly be performed while Ezio is concealed in a stack of hay. Hidden objects will also return, though the report indicates that players will gain in-game benefits by hunting them down this time around.

The official story: "I can confirm that the information in the upcoming Game Informer magazine is factually correct," a word-mincing Ubisoft representative told GameSpot.

Bogus or not bogus?: Looking not bogus. However, it's impossible to say with certainty whether the forum poster was accurate in his details until Game Informer hits newsstands next week.

The first one was pretty amazing, but I agree, it did have its faults. I don't think Ubisoft will let that happen again or credibility starts going out the window. #2 will be much better!

"Well-received" doesn't just mean that you gave it an overly high score. I've generally heard very poor things said about the game, especially how astoundingly repetitive and dull it often is.

Face it, it was poorly received after having a lot of positive (and, in my opinion, justified) hype.

I'm just hoping that the sequel is able to correct the many, many flaws with the original and deliver on the promise that it had pre-release. There's still the possibility for a good game to come out of this... I'm just not so certain that Ubisoft can deliver it.

Seems like they listened to the fans and made improvements on what most people found faulty and boring. Let's hope the game delivers and becomes the game I expected the first one to be.

Ubisoft better let us know what happens to Desmond and the "Bleeding Effect" with Altair's DNA memory, (here's hoping for a leap of faith with guns blazing if you get to play as Desmond).

This looks freaking awesome; as long as they spice it up a little more than the (pretty fun) repetition of the old one, it'll be great. And everyone knows there's no such thing as an unintentional leak these days!

Loved the first one, but my main big problem is the hype added to it. Usually games that have a lot of hype turn out not to be so great, but hopefully i'm proved wrong in the long run.

I thought the first game was a strong rent, great story, I liked many of the mechanics, although some did feel a little clunky, but it was really really repetitive. Hopefully this one will add some variety in the missions and little side stuff. If so, it will probably deserve the high score that the first one didn't.

@ admiral picard: So just because a large amount of people have a different opinion than you they're "sheep?" If you've noticed, there aren't too many people here who are lauding the game with no actual support for their opinion, most of the people here are actually admitting that the game had certain faults but they still enjoyed it. It seems that you're merely bringing down other great games that many people find enjoyable because you feel you'll get some strange satisfaction by opposing everyone else and envisioning yourself as some great thinker simply because you have a different opinion than everyone else.

    Damn...there's hype...and then there's this...

Well, for starters that poster is going to get strung by the balls if Ubsioft ever finds him. But anyway, this seems legitimate. Seems to me game informer is looking to make some bucks, so I guess that poster is a noble individual to many people. From the comments of those who got the mag early, it seems it's legit. It'll be interesting to see how they tie this one in to AC1, and oh yeah, the flying machine was never attempted...only imagined.

  • woods0419

    Posted Apr 12, 2009 8:02 pm PT

And the guy below talking about Halo and Gears of War being boring must really be retarded. I guess you might as well throw Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, and all sports games in with your list of boring games.

  • woods0419

    Posted Apr 12, 2009 7:58 pm PT

I have to agree with Bison_Green on this one... I was almost positive that they would give Desmond training as an assassin (the training he left behind ) and show his story.... maybe the finale of the trio of games will get back to Desmond... if they don't they really wasted AC1's story. Also, I really hope they keep the very satisfying counter kills... those sword fights and cinematic kills are what has kept me playing this game for so long!

@admiral_picard: OK, dude Ubisoft is a great company that has produced amazing hits. Splinter Cell? Its a good franchise, but are u forgetting Ubisoft's other great hits? Prince of Persia? Ghost Recon? Rainbow Six? and for fans of the anime, Naruto: Rise of a Ninja? I agree Assassin's Creed was incredibly repetitive, but it had an engrossing story, which was why people were interested in finishing the game, despite its repetitiveness.

  • MrFreshPies

    Posted Apr 12, 2009 7:33 pm PT

Pretty interesting. AC1 was very repetitive, hopefully they will have an open-ended form of play, that has many more options.

    Posted Apr 12, 2009 6:26 pm PT

Seems promising.AC1 was a good game but,as alot of people have pointed out,it was ferociously repetitive. If they take that criticisms into account when producing its sequel it has the potential to be a really good game.

  • jazilla

    Posted Apr 12, 2009 6:11 pm PT

To end AC1 the way they did and not put this game in Desmond's Era is pretty poor. You are left with a perfect way to "level" Desmond up by having him escape and be trained by those who rescued him. I don't understand why you would just switch to a character that there really is no attachment to.

  • Beefman555

    Posted Apr 12, 2009 5:49 pm PT

RonTorque, I am sure this is just another descendant of Desmond, as he is probably searching through more of his memories.

I am pretty excited about how this game will look.I just hope that they continue Desmond's story and not suck another guy's brain because the first game's ending was a cliff hanger and we need to know what exactly happened from their.

Climb a tower, jump in haystack, blend (lower head) kill a "bad guy". New location do the same again, be told all the control's like you have memory issues. Get in to sword fight's
hold block & counter. A single cell organisim could play it, and you would have to have only single cell in your brain not to get board by it. A great tec demo only nothing more.
