The MTA committed to building the Second Avenue Subway yesterday, signing the $337 million contract to dig the tunnels for the first section of the long-awaited line.
"This contract paves the way for the first expansion of the subway system in more than 50 years," said Mysore Nagaraja, president of MTA Capital Construction. Ground will be broken in April.
Once all the utilities have been relocated - which should take six to eight months - to make way for the new line, a tunnel-boring machine will begin its 50-feet-a-day journey down from 96th Street.
It's the first part of a project that will extend the Q line to East 96th Street, with stops at 63rd, 72nd and 86th streets.
