Box Score

IRVINE, Calif. --- Ben Orloff and Ronnie Shaeffer each recorded three hits apiece as fifth-ranked UC Irvine swept Long Beach State with a 9-5 win Saturday at Anteater Ballpark. The sweep was the Anteaters' second over a Big West Conference opponent this season as the team improved to 8-1 in conference action (22-9 overall). The sweep over the Dirtbags was the first for UCI since 2002.

Orloff was 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored and became UC Irvine's all-time leader in career runs with 149. Shaeffer batted 3 for 5 with an RBI while Francis Larson drove in two runs with his fifth homerun of the season. Tommy Reyes also sparked the Anteater offense, going 2 for 3 with a run batted in while DJ Crumlich and Cory Olson each added a pair of hits in the win.

Starter Crosby Slaught improved to 3-0 after pitching six innings while allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits and striking out two. Noel Avison and Kyle Necke combined for three scoreless innings. In the series the bullpen held the Dirtbags to five hits in 11 scoreless innings.

Long Beach State started the scoring in the second, getting a run on a sacrifice fly by Taylor Krick but the Anteaters tied the game on an RBI single by Reyes in the bottom half of the inning.

The Dirtbags took the lead again in the third. Derek Legg doubled to lead off the frame and Tre Dennis tripled to right and then scored on Jonathan Jones' sacrifice for a 3-1 lead.

Shaeffer cut the lead to one in the UCI third with an infield single to score Orloff and Larson belted a two-run home run to give the Anteaters a 4-3 edge.

The Dirtbags reclaimed a 5-4 lead in the fourth on an RBI double by Devin Lohman and a sacrifice fly by John Hill but the Anteaters answered again in the bottom of the inning with two runs on a sacrifice by Orloff and a single to left by Eric Deragisch to plate Reyes.

That would be all for the Dirtbags as Slaught set down six of the next seven batters he faced before handing the ball off to the UCI bullpen. Necke registered his first save after holding Long Beach State hitless in 1.1 innings.

The Anteaters tacked on a single run in the seventh and posted two more in the eighth to cap the scoring.
