This carte de visite photograph of Colonel Henry Phillipps, Poona Horse was taken by Rustumjee Jamsetjee in Poona c1879-1881. The back mark of the photo is shown to the left. Note that the identification on the photograph misspelled the surname.

Colonel Phillipps is in a mess dress uniform. This maybe an example of cold weather mess dress. This photograph was taken either just prior or just after Colonel Phillipps' service in the 2nd Afghan War. This service involved exposure to severe cold weather conditions. The outer jacket is dark green with gold lace trim. The trousers are also dark green with gold lace side trim. The mess vest is believed to be red (scarlet) with gold lace trim. Details of the front of the mess dress are shown above to the right.

The sleeve ornament is for a Lieutenant Colonel and is constructed of gold embroidered lace with rows of Russian braid arranged in an eye pattern on the top and bottom. The detail of the sleeve ornament is shown to the left.
